Meet Maverick, our Reston Pet of the Week.

Here’s what owner Brandy had to say about the 2-year-old pit bull she adopted when he was 4 months old.

This puppy was what we call a “Three Strikes.” #1 – He was a Pit Bull. Notorious for having a bad rap and illegal to own in parts of Maryland. #2 – He was black. Black dogs (and cats) are amongst the least desirable pets. #3 – He was sick. He had what is called demodectic mange, a very easily cured, and non-contagious form of mange that causes itchy patches and hair loss. If not treated, it becomes much worse and animals can suffer terribly with it.

I took my family, and our current dog, to meet this puppy. It was love at first sight. We decided to take Maverick in and see how he would do as a member of our family. The first couple of days were a little tough. Our dog, Harper, likes to be in control, and he can sometimes be a bully. But after the two dogs figured their stuff out, Maverick, we knew, were here to stay.

Maverick has grown into an almost 80-pound block of rippling muscle. He is famous at the Reston Dog Park. His giant head is marveled at, his perfect manners revered. Everybody loves Maverick. And a lot of people have had their minds changed about pit bulls because of Maverick.

Maverick is 100 percent what we wanted in a dog. He is the perfect ambassador to his breed. Maverick shows everyone he meets that the American pit bull terrier is not some beast of an animal, bred to kill everything in sight. I have three children, aged 15 to 2. We have another dog. We have several cats, and we foster cats and even tiny newborn kittens. And Maverick is as gentle as can be with all of them. He has never shown an ounce of aggression and is completely committed to being a loyal, friendly, fun-loving pet.

This week’s Reston Pets of the Week are “siblings” Stella and Tito. Here is what owner Teresa has to say about them:

Stella (an almost 3-year old-boxer) and her “brother” Tito (a 1-year-old miniature pinscher) are the light of our lives.

When we brought our Tito home in hopes of giving Stella a companion, we never could have dreamed how well they would bond. Stella has taken him on like he was her own and has protected and loved her little brother since he was 7 weeks old, not to mention the HUGE impact she has had on his training!

She is the perfect role model and has showed Tito exactly how to behave. We can’t imagine life without them, or imagine their lives without each other. They sleep in the same crate (by choice) and are never more than a few feet apart at any given instance.

We can’t wait to see how their relationship evolves over time. Two dogs are truly better than one!

This week’s Reston Pet of the Week is a feline friend. Meet Betty Lou, who comes to Reston from far away. Here is what her owner, Jennifer, has to say:

Betty Lou was rescued from the streets of New Delhi, India by my friend and colleague Leslie, who fostered her for the first two months of her life. Betty Lou was a tiny kitten and my two older cats helped show her the ways of a house cat.

When I returned to Northern Virginia, Betty Lou was thrilled to watch wildlife and look over the Reston woods from my windows. In fact, in 2013 Betty Lou used her finely tuned hunting skills to protect my home from unwelcome wildlife that had mistakenly entered the premises.

Betty Lou’s favorite beverage is tea. She will drink tea out of a cup if given an opportunity!  She is also a serious catnip junkie. Her favorite past times include playing with toys and my other cats, napping on the cat tree, and patrolling my home for interlopers.

Meet, Champ, this week’s Reston Pet of the Week. He’s a rescue dog who is very active. Here is what owner Claire has to say:

My husband, Steve, and I adopted our furry friend, Champ, from Lab Rescue this past January. We fell in love with his cute ears and his goofy, long tongue Champ is a 2 year old lab mix with lots of energy and tons of love. Champ loves to go on runs, play in the water and play ball on the field. He loves all the kids in our neighborhood and loves to watch them play out our front window.
We adopted Champ knowing that he was heartworm positive. In March, we went through the month long treatment to fight the heart worm. We just found out last week that he is no longer has heartworm!! He is such a tough, little guy and he truly is a champ. We are so proud of our buddy.

We are totally in love with Champ and he is the perfect addition to our little family.

Reston Pet of the Week: Lucy

Meet Lucy, this week’s Reston Pet of the Week. Here is what her owner, Mark, has to say about her:

Lucy is our very special Foxhound that we love very much! She was originally fostered and then adopted through A Forever-Home Rescue Foundation in Chantily, VA and just made the big move to her own home in Reston with us earlier this year. Lucy may have a loud bark, but is a very friendly dog, especially to women. She’s not much for playing, but she loves to sniff.

Her favorite hobbies include eating any and everything, sleeping in various positions, going on walks on the trails and through the woods, swimming in the Reston lakes, but her favorite activity is cuddling next to her Mom and Dad.

Feel free to stop by and say Hi to Lucy if you see her on our walks around the neighborhood!

Reston Pet of the Week: Cleo

Meet this week’s Reston Pet of the Week, Cleo. She is a blue New Jersey Wooly rabbit who has political experience and is also a patron of the arts.

Here is what owner Tracie has to say about her:

Cleo has finely crimped angora fur, which can be used for spinning. She is a friendly, athletic, accomplished rabbit who enjoys her morning hop in the backyard and loves all fruits and vegetables except cantaloupe.

She represented her species on Capitol Hill supporting Rep. James Moran’s (D-Va.) “Humane Cosmetics” bill against animal testing and serves as a model and muse for her artist owner.

Cleo is often found with Tracie Griffith Tso in her Lake Anne workshop, where she makes and paints pottery, often with rabbits. Cleo travels to the Torpedo Factory Art Center in Alexandria, where she meets and greets customers in-studio.

This week’s Reston Pet of the Week is Wilson, a 2-year-old Golden Retriever. Here is what his owner, Jennifer, has to say about him:

Meet Wilson! He greets anyone and everyone (human or animal) with a giant smile and sometimes a big, sloppy kiss. His talents include knowing the words: ‘Breakfast,” “Lunch,” and “Dinner,” and being an expert of the ‘leave it’ command. He also has a world-famous tail because it is so large and fluffy and is known to make people’s days by sitting in the passenger seat of our car and smiling at onlookers in traffic.

When he isn’t taking naps, Wilson enjoys playing tag and considers himself a stick connoisseur. If he had it is way, he would spend all his free time gnawing on sticks and running in the parks of Reston. … and rooting on his favorite sports team, the Washington Nationals.

Wilson’s favorite foods include: ice cubes, lettuce(!), and peanut butter, for which he will do endless tricks. Whenever he hears the sound of lettuce being cut for salads, or ice cube trays being emptied, he is never far away and will appear out of nowhere in hopes of getting a special treat. His favorite current activity is trying to befriend the household cat, Sophie, which is a work in progress….#hiss.

This week’s Reston Pet of the Week is Ava, a rescue from the Fairfax County Animal Shelter. Here is what her owner, Katie, has to say about her:

Miss Ava is a 1-year-old Husky Australian Cattle Dog mix that came into my life this past February.
I adopted her from the Fairfax County Animal Shelter, where I fell in love with her beautiful blue eyes.
She has properly filled a hole in my heart with the loss of my Siberian Husky, Sadie.

Ava is a sweet soul and lots of energy. Our time together is spent hiking, long walks, and “bikejoing”(mountain biking with a dog) on the W & OD trial. She is getting acclimated to her new life in Reston and adjusting well. I, on the other hand, have had to adjust to a youngster back in the home! Discipline, consistency, and love have worked to have our lives blend together.

I’m grateful to have Ava in my life. She is a handful but, worth it.

This week’s Reston Pet of the Week is Flip, a Black Lab Mix. Here is what owners Kristin and Joe have to say about him:

One year ago, we rescued Flip through City Dogs Rescue, which had saved him from a kill shelter in North Carolina right as his time was running out. He is calm and well behaved in the house, but definitely has his “crazy dog” side and loves to run around the yard like a wild maniac. His favorite things to do are to eat, play with other dogs and sit right at (or on) our feet. He likes to hang out wherever we are.

Flip is a smart dog with a freckled tongue who knows many words. He’ll tilt his head when we speak to him, and you’d better be careful if you say anything that sounds like “Do you want to eat?” He will immediately lick his chops and bark at you. Mention the words “walk” or “car ride” and you are also in trouble. We love everything about his enthusiastic attitude! Adopting him has made us appreciate life so much more.

This week’s Reston Pet of the Week is Bentley, a playful Pug puppy. Here is what his owner Sarah has to say about him:

Meet Bentley. Bentley loves to snuggle and give puppy kisses. He enjoys running round playing with his Kong Tennis balls as well as chase the children around in the neighborhood.

Bentley is a singleton, meaning he was the only one in the litter. He is used to getting all the attention and we can’t go anywhere fast because everyone wants to meet him. We don’t mind because of the happiness he brings to everyone he meets. He also never stepped on grass until he came home to us. He is from Illinois.

Bentley loves Reston Town Center and we are looking forward to exploring Lake Anne. Bentley is a love bug. If you see him please come and say hi.

This week’s Reston Pet of the Week is Zeus, a 2 1/2-year-old border collie/shepherd mix.

Here is what Zeus’ people, Susanne and John, had to say about him:

We rescued Zeus when he was eight weeks old from Lost Dog and Cat Rescue. He was the quietest pup in the litter the night we rescued him, but we soon learned to find out that he has more energy than a couple of kids combined.

Zeus enjoys many things, including but not limited to: scouring the house for any paper product he can find (tissues, TP, newspapers, napkins, it doesn’t matter, they are all tasty!), getting a new bone on Fridays for the weekend, sunbathing on the deck, playing pickle in the middle, visiting friends with fenced in yards and going to doggie day care.

Zeus also enjoys showing off his repertoire of tricks to family members and friends including high-fiving, praying and playing dead. We are sure glad that he is our “fur-child!”

Meet, Hayley, this week’s Reston Pet of the Week.

Hayley is a 4-year-old yellow lab. Here is what her owner, Caroline, has to say about her:

Here’s Hayley! She greets everyone she meets as if they were her best friend — complete with insane tail wagging and full-body shaking.

Aside from every lab’s favorite thing (meal time), Hayley’s true joys in life are tennis balls and snuggling. She’ll chase a tennis ball until she doesn’t have an ounce of energy left, and if she doesn’t have a ball to bring you, she’ll find one. We were once out exploring several acres of woods when she veered off, only to return with a tennis ball.

After she’s done catching the pesky tennis ball, all she wants to do is snuggle. She’s a 60-lb. dog who thinks she was meant to be a lapdog. Her plan of attack is always the same: approach the couch, stare at
her victim lovingly until they surrender, and then hop up and snuggle down — often using her victim’s leg as a pillow. Snuggling has become such an integral part of her being that she has earned her own hashtag
(#snuggledog), and most of her human friends refer to her as “Snuggledog” instead of “Hayley.”

Her perfect balance of playfulness, lovingness, and snuggles makes her the most wonderful dog… in my extremely unbiased opinion.

Meet Louie, Reston Now’s Pet of the Week.

Here is what Louie’s owner, Allison, has to say:

This is Louie. He is a french bulldog puppy. He loves to play with his puppy siblings, especially wrestle. He has a signature move in which he swan dives off the couch onto his brothers back and does a tuck and roll off of him in order to not hurt himself.

He also really likes to run specifically around things. I have counted his laps around a bean bag chair to about 10 per session.

Given he is a puppy, he loves to nibble. This could be your nose, ear, toes —  so you have to watch out. He loves food as well. We may have to work on his obsession of food for the future. One thing he hates is bath time. His look is pretty sad while he is getting a bath. You would think we have done the most horrible thing to him ever when we give him a bath.
