On (and Off) the Docket: Reston Development Project Update

July was supposed to be a big month for Reston development and redevelopment applications, with about a half dozen scheduled for public hearings and other review by the Fairfax County Planning Commission.

Many of those have been postponed at the developers’ request. This often happens in the summer months.

Here is a look at what is on the docket and what’s been moved forward a few months:

Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints — The church goes before the Fairfax County Board of Zoning Appeals on Wednesday, July 13 at 9 a.m. The church is seeking to permit for a place of worship on land zoned residential at Hunter Mill and Crowell Roads.

Tall Oaks Village Center — As previously reported by Reston Now, The Jefferson Apartment Group’s plans to redevelop the mostly vacant retail center into 156 homes and 8,500 square feet of retail has a public hearing on Thursday, July 14 at 8:15 p.m. Read about it in this previous story and also check out the planning staff report.

Wiehle Station Ventures — This plan for 260 residences on the south side of the Wiehle-Reston East Metro Station was supposed to have a planning commission public hearing July 20. It has been postponed until Sept. 21.

St. Johns Woods — Developer Bozzuto has plans to turn the 250-unit garden apartment complex into 511 multi-family units and 51 townhomes. After several postponements, the new planning commission hearing date is Sept. 29.

Lofts at Reston Station — Pulte Homes’ plan to rezone an industrial/office park into 42 “two-over-two” townhomes has been postponed several times since December. Its new planning commission hearing date is Sept. 29.

Roland Clarke Place — The planning commission hearing for redevelopment of an office building into 49 townhomes adjacent to the Reston Heights development is slated for July 28. A staff report with more details will be available this week.

This project is also very close to the former American Press Institute building, where Sekas Homes plans to build residential units. That plan was sent by the planning commission to the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors with a recommendation for denial. No date has been set for the Board of Supervisors’ hearing.
