The restaurant, which sells burgers grilled over an open flame and hand-spun milkshakes, is the latest retail tenant to join JBG Smith’s RTC West development at 12120 Sunset Hills Road.
The restaurant company did not respond to a request for comment from Reston Now, although an announcement by the company was posted online.
BGR has locations in Georgia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, South Carolina, the District, Tennessee, and Utah. The restaurant is also located in Arlington, Springfield, and Tysons Corner. Two locations are also in Kuwait. It’s currently celebrating its 10th anniversary since it opened the first location in Bethesda, Md. in 2008.
Other businesses that are scheduled to open at the development include The Black Squirrel, Forever Nails, and Punjabi by Nature.
More retail tenants could be on the way if the county approves an application by JBG Smith for expansion of the existing development, which is mostly office buildings and ground floor retail so far. The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors will vote on the expansion project next week.

An exact opening date was not available, although restaurants are opening their doors in development, which is already home to Cooper’s Hawk Winery & Restaurant, Nando’s, Honeygrow and Starbucks.
Mezeh Mediterranean Grill, which is located in the same development, is also expected to open this month. An exact opening date will be confirmed next week, a company representative told Reston Now on Friday.
Other businesses planned for the development include The Black Squirrel, an old-school gastropub, Forever Nails and Punjabi by Nature.

There are currently 22 BGR restaurants operating nationwide, with more than half of those in the D.C. and Baltimore areas. Nearby locations include Sterling and Tysons. Another, in the Mosaic District in Merrifield, is listed on the chain’s website as coming soon.
Cooper’s Hawk Winery and Restaurant was previously announced as the anchor of RTC West, which is expected to open later this year. Nando’s Peri-Peri and Mezeh Mediterranean Grill are also signed on to be tenants.
The Reston BGR location will be operated by Sci-Reston LLC as part of a franchise agreement that includes the opening up to three additional locations down the line.
“We are thrilled to have Sci-Reston LLC as our franchise partner,” said Ed Kelley, BGR president of franchising, in a press release. “[We] look forward to opening in such a dynamic lifestyle center in the Washington, D.C. market.”
A new tiki bar and Thai restaurant is coming to Reston next year.
Tiki Thai, which describes itself as Virginia’s “first premier tiki bar,” plans to open at 12100 Sunset Hills Road in the spring of next year.
The restaurant and bar will join a number of ground-floor retail tenants, including Famous Toastery and BGR The Burger Joint, at JBG Smith’s RTC West development.
Permits filed with the county indicate the restaurant will also include outdoor seating. Tiki bars are often known for their exotic-themed drinks, especially rum-based mixed drinks.
Earlier this year, the Black Squirrel backed away from plans to open a new beer bar in the development. Details of why the DC-based bar backed out of a previously-inked deal were not made public.

A new brunch and breakfast spot is set to open in RTC West in less than two weeks.
The restaurant is currently hiring. Its next job fairs at 12100 Sunset Hills Road, R6 are scheduled for:
- Today (April 2): 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
- Thursday (April 4): 4-8 p.m.
- Saturday (April 6): noon-4 p.m.
The restaurant will join RTC West’s growing food scene, which includes Honeygrow, Mezeh Mediterranean Grill and BGR The Burger Joint. Fine-dining, Indian restaurant Bombay Velvet is also set to open soon at RTC West.
The wait is almost over for Bombay Velvet, a fine-dining, Indian restaurant, at RTC West.
With the inspections process winding down, the restaurant will open in late March at 12120 Sunset Hills Road, Owner Rajiv Chopra told Reston Now.
Famous Toastery, a breakfast and brunch restaurant, is also set to open this month, an employee told Reston Now.
The food scene at RTC West, a small office park slated to become a major mixed-use project, is coming to life with the addition of another restaurant.
Rajiv Chopra, a chef-turned-owner, plans to open Bombay Velvet (12120 Sunset Hills Road), a fine-dining, Indian restaurant by the last week of November or the beginning of December. Chopra says the restaurant, which will be located next to Honeygrow, will offer a unique “upscale” dining experience with a full bar menu.
A grand opening will likely be held sometime near Christmas, Chopra told Reston Now. Chopra also owns three other Indian restaurants called Punjabi By Nature in Leesburg, Chantilly, and Vienna, but Bombay Velvet offers “a completely new concept” that differentiates itself from Chopra’s other businesses, he said.
The Indian restaurant adds a new mix to existing area restaurants, including Honeygrow and BGR The Burger Joint.

A new sit-down restaurant is joining the food scene at JBG Smith’s RTC West development (12120 Sunset Hills Road).
Gary Ready, the Reston location’s owner who was born and raised in Fairfax County, said the restaurant is currently in the process of receiving permits from Fairfax County. Ready, who has been behind several businesses over the last 25 years in Fairfax and Loudoun counties, said he was intrigued by the restaurant’s high-quality ingredients and speed of service.
“The average ticket time is 10 minutes. A lot of other restaurants in Reston Town Center give you quick service. This is one of the few sit-down restaurants in Reston where you can get the sit-down experience and still be in and out in 30 minutes,” he told Reston Now.
Ready said the restaurant will be open from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. and can seat between 100 to 105 people.
County records indicate the building plan is under review.

Fairfax County’s Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a nearly 1.4 million square feet addition to RTC West, a mixed-use project bounded by the Washington & Old Dominion Trail to the north and Reston Town Center Parkway to the east. The vote on Tuesday (Sept. 25) brings yet another major neighborhood near the future Reston Town Center Metro Station.
JBG Smith will add up to 576 multifamily units, 700,000 square feet of office space, and some retail. The site is currently home to three six-story office buildings, two parking garages and retail tenants like Cooper’s Hawk Winery, honeygrow, and the recently opened BGR The Burger Joint.
Bailey Edelson, JBG Smith’s senior vice president of development, said a common green at the center of the property will offer a “convening location” for the public. The company also paid careful attention to balance the distinctiveness of each building whilst still creating a neighborhood-like appeal, Edelson said.
The expanded version of the project, which is adjacent to the Reston Gateway project, adds another mixed-use neighborhood near the Metro station. The site design incorporates the future Town Center Parkway underpass that would connect Sunset Hills Road to Sunrise Valley Drive through an underground tunnel across the Dulles Toll Road.
Hunter Mill District Supervisor Cathy Hudgins said the project offers a suitable mix of commercial, retail and residential that allows people to “observe and participant” among higher buildings planned and approved near the future Metro station. She also said the underpass will help alleviate traffic and congestion in the immediate area.
A new right-only entrance from southbound Town Center Parkway at the north of the property line will be added to the development. The site design also incorporates bicycle lanes that provide an improved connection to the Washington & Old Dominion Trail.
The Planning Commission approved the project on Sept. 13. Edelson offered the following statement in response to a request from Reston Now:
“The Master Plan for RTC West will enable JBG Smith to transform the existing predominantly suburban site into a more urban neighborhood, and enhance the connection between the new metro station and Town Center. The new retail has brought significant amenities and activity to the existing office buildings and we intend to build on that momentum as we bring the Master Plan online over time.”
The plan, which includes 3.4 acres of open space, is as follows:
- Buildings 1, 2, and 3: Existing six-story office building with retail on the ground floor will remain.
- Building 4: A one-story freestanding restaurant, Cooper’s Hawk Winery, will remain.
- Building 5: A new eight-story office with 160,000 square feet, including 10,000 square feet of retail.
- Building 6: A new 22-story office building with 396,000 square feet, including 16,000 square feet of retail.
- Building 7: A 20-story residential building with 293 multi-family units.
- Building 8: A new 22-story residential building with 283 multi-family units. This building wraps the north facade of a second parking garage.
- Building 9: A new seven-story office building located on top of a current parking structure.
- Building 10: A one-story freestanding restaurant located on the common green.
The developer did not provide the timeline of the project or the anticipated cost, as that information has not yet been finalized.

UPDATE: The Starbucks location opened Monday, Oct. 9.
Another new Starbucks will soon open in Reston.
Signs inside the future coffee shop at 12130A Sunset Hills Road, within the RTC West development, indicate that the new Starbucks will be ready soon. The storefront is attached to Cooper’s Hawk Winery and Restaurant, which opened in August.
A spokesperson for RTC West developer JBG Smith said she could not provide an exact opening date for the Starbucks. An “opening soon” sign hangs inside, visible through the front windows. Several “Now Open” sandwich boards are also stacked inside, ready for deployment.
This will be the ninth Starbucks in Reston, joining locations at North Point Village Center, South Lakes Village Center, Hunters Woods Village Center, Reston Town Center, the Spectrum shopping plaza, Plaza America, Reston Station and inside Target.
Six additional restaurants are also planned for the development. Significant work has been done at the sites of the future Nando’s and Mezeh restaurants, which have been in the plans since April 2016. Other coming restaurants, which were announced earlier this year, include BGR The Burger Joint, Punjabi by Nature, The Black Squirrel and Honeygrow.

In March 2015, JBG Companies (now JBG Smith) announced that Cooper’s Hawk would be the anchor tenant of the 40,000-square-foot RTC West development. With its opening this morning, the Reston location becomes the 30th Cooper’s Hawk restaurant in the nation. It is the third in Virginia.
The 9,365-square-foot restaurant also features a 522-square-foot mezzanine area. It has “a lively tasting room and market, indoor dining for 196 guests, outdoor dining for seating for 146, and a private event space that can accommodate up to 44,” according to a recent press release from the restaurant. More than 200 employees were hired this summer.

The restaurant’s menu includes items such as candied bacon and artisan cheeses; gnocchi bolognese with braised short rib; Southern hot chicken; pan-roasted barramundi; shrimp and scallop risotto; and wild mushroom-crusted chicken. In addition, more than 40 wines — produced at the Cooper’s Hawk winery in Illinois — are available to customers. Each menu item has a wine-pairing suggestion.
One of the restaurant’s most popular features, its representatives say, is its Wine Club. Members are privy to special wine offerings each month, as well as monthly Wine Club dinners and tastings.
Cooper’s Hawk will be open at 11 a.m. each day. Closing times are 9:30 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, 10:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays; and 9 p.m. Sundays.

A permit to operate the eating establishment at 12130 Sunset Hills Road, in the RTC West commercial development, was issued by Fairfax County this week. Signage outside the front door of the restaurant advertises its Aug. 28 opening, as previously announced.

The site is bordered by Town Center Parkway to the east, the W&OD Trail to the north, and the plaza that contains Chick-fil-A, Potbelly Sandwich Works, Chipotle and more to the west.
Signage recently placed in office buildings on the property — formerly known as the Reston Executive Center — shows eight new businesses in total that are in the works to be coming. Along with Cooper’s Hawk, six other restaurants are listed:
- Punjabi by Nature, Indian cuisine. It has three current locations, in Leesburg, Vienna and Chantilly.
- The Black Squirrel, a DC-based gastropub. This would be its third location.
- Honeygrow, a Philly-based fast-casual chain serving stir-fry, salads and more.
- BGR The Burger Joint, which was first announced in January.
- Mezza Mediterranean Grille and Nando’s Peri-Peri, which were both announced last spring.
When asked for further details about the potential new businesses, a JBG spokesperson told Reston Now that the company is “working on a variety of leases and will hope to announce in the coming weeks.” We will provide more information about the new businesses when it is provided to us.

That big new building at 12130 Sunset Hills Road? It’s Cooper’s Hawk Winery and Restaurant, and it has announced an Aug. 28 opening date.
Before that date, though, the restaurant is looking to hire more than 200 people. Its first hiring fair is set for Wednesday, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at its temporary hiring office, 12100 Sunset Hills Road Suite 130.
“Positions range from servers to line cooks, bartenders to wine tasting room attendants,” according to a press release. “Just about every job needed to run an upscale winery and restaurant needs to be filled.”
Additional hiring events are scheduled for July 11-12 and July 25-26, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day. Cooper’s Hawk will be conducting open interviews with applicants on the spot, according to the release, as it aims to fill 202 positions.
According to founder and CEO Tim McEnery in the press release:
“We are currently looking to staff team members who have a passion for wine, food and first-class hospitality and look forward to meeting and working with many great members of the community. We are offering our staff a highly competitive pay rate, for example line cooks will be paid at $15 per hour and hosts at $12 per hour.”
This will be the 30th Cooper’s Hawk location nationwide. There are two others in Virginia, in Ashburn and Richmond.
