After the pandemic crept into the region, Tracie Griffith Tso, Reston Community Center Chinese brushpainting instructor and Torpedo Factory artist, targeted to launch her Etsy store by Easter.

With the Torpedo Factory Art Center closed to the public and the Reston Community Center shuttered by COVID-19 guidelines, independent artists find it necessary to pivot creatively to make ends meet.

“The City of Alexandria is expecting rent for my studio/gallery space at the Torpedo Factory even though it is not open for walk-in sales,” she said. “My attention shifted from a Cherry Blossom event and BunnyFest at the Factory to sales online in an instant.” Griffith Tso now spends her days painting animals, photographing and shipping original brush painted high-fire pottery and limited-edition prints.
