Crossing the Street at Reston Town Center? Wave A Flag.

by RestonNow.com April 17, 2018 at 3:30 pm 17 Comments

If you’re a pedestrian, you probably know to look left, right and left again before crossing the street — at least in theory.

In some parts of Reston Town Center, some pedestrians might be adding another unconventional step: waving a flailing yellow flag.

According to the local blog Restonian, signage near the Hyatt Parking Garage indicates a crosswalk pilot program has begun at the edge of Reston Town Center.

Instructions encourage pedestrians to grab a yellow flag from the edge of the crosswalk and wave it until approaching vehicles come to a complete stop, according to the news blog.

Signs caution that the flags are “just a safety tool” and that “pedestrians are reminded to look both ways, make eye contact with the driver and exercise caution before entering all crosswalks.”

Hmmn. I think this sounds a bit April Foolsie. So, drivers don’t stop for pedestrians at cross walks and stop signs? Onerous flags will help?

By the way, I know someone who was struck at RTC by a driver running a stop sign. In this case I don’t blame the pedestrian who was in the middle of the crosswalk.

Does local law enforcement not have a role on this property?

      Maybe. Or, maybe not:

The County of Fairfax Code – section 82-1-3, requires the Fairfax County Police Department to obtain permission prior to enforcing motor vehicle laws in certain areas.

      “Section 82-1-3. Enforcement by County officers;
      (b) With the consent of the landowner, any such officer or other uniformed employee of the police department may patrol the landowner’s property to enforce State or County motor vehicle registration and licensing requirements.

These areas include streets and roads within subdivisions or condominium projects, where such streets are maintained by the owners or an association of owners and private property. The motor vehicle laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia and the County of Fairfax include all statutes dealing with motor vehicle registration, licensing, operation and parking. In order to implement these laws on private property, the Police Department must receive prior permission to carryout (sic) such enforcement.”

    • Why do you bother?

Generally, PDs have no jurisdiction on private property.

The signage says this is a “pilot.” Not within RTC, but at one crosswalk across Bluemont near the W&OD.

Thanks. I used to read Reston Now and get basic facts. That crossing is a disaster and I have been almost hit crossing there.

    • Why do you bother?

At least they’ll make you a more visible target…

  • Why do you bother?

Oh, I’ll be waving something as I stroll PAST RTC…

After a dozen of her infamous “charrettes”?

  • Guest

Solution: BOYCOTT RESTON TOWN CENTER! No pedestrian issues at all.

The Restonian is a “news blog?” I thought it was pretty clearly a humor site.

The flag won’t make drivers look up from their cell phones.
