FCPS school bus

(Updated, Thursday, 7 a.m.).

Fairfax County Schools will be closed due to extremely low temperatures on Thursday.

The school had previously announced Wednesday night it would be on a two-hour delay.

Original story:

Fairfax County Public Schools will begin two hours late on Thursday due to extremely cold temperatures in the forecast.

Lows Thursday morning in Reston will be 7 degrees, but with the wind chill it will feel like -6, the National Weather Service said.

The school system also had a two-hour delay on Wednesday in order to clear snow from Tuesday’s snowstorm.

From FCPS:

All Fairfax County public schools and school offices will open two hours late on Wednesday, Jan. 8. Central offices will open at 10 a.m.

Morning preschool (special education) classes are canceled.
Afternoon preschool classes start on their regular schedule.
Full-day preschool (special education) and Family and Early Childhood Education Program/Head Start classes start two hours later than the regular schedule.
Morning field trips are canceled.
SACC centers will open at 7:00 a.m.
Morning transportation for high school academy classes is canceled. Transportation for afternoon academy classes will be provided.
Adult and community education classes will start on time.

latest I read on multiple fronts is that they called closing for the day just after 7 am.

I got the e-mail at 7:24am!! WAY too late to announce as far as I am concerned. Not thrilled with FCPS this week.

This is how they give us the finger for complaining on Tuesday.

Snow and ice on Tuesday? Be here on time
Cold on Thursday? Go ahead and stay home

How bout a hat and gloves people?!?!? This is insane. Let’s save snow days for when it’s actually dangerous out there. #Academic_Failure

Have they not heard of these inventions known as “heaters”, “coats”, and “hats”?

Also, “buses that work” (since their excuse is “some buses wouldn’t start”).

  • Noelle

This is ridiculous… the kids could have definitely gone to school, just bundle them up as much as possible. I didn’t even get the e-mail from FCPS that there was no school till 7:24am which is WAY too late to announce in my mind! My mom works at one of the schools and some of her coworkers were already at the school when they found out.

It’s for the children! Dear God, think of the children!

Uh – “unscheduled leave” means using a vacation day. It’s not like those workers are getting a “snow day.”

I understand that but services to county residents are greatly reduced when no one goes to work. That’s usually why scheduling does not permit everyone to take vacation at the same time. Everyone else goes to work, but county government employees can’t make it?

I think you’ll find in those circumstances, few people actually take the day (I know I sure don’t want to waste a vacation day for something like this) unless it’s a situation where someone has to because the kids are home from school – same as it would be in the private sector.

In the private sector, we still work even if the little darlings don’t have school. Our employers don’t give us the option to stay home. We think ahead and have childcare lined up for these situations.
