Fairfax County Police A man walking in the Lake Anne area early on Saturday was assaulted by two other men, Fairfax County Police said.

The victim told police he was walking on North Shore Drive near Waterview Cluster about 12:15 a.m. on Saturday when two men approached him. Both suspects assaulted the victim, police said.

The victim resisted and both suspects fled on foot. The victim was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The suspects were described as males wearing dark clothing, police said.

Last week, a man was assaulted during an armed robbery on North Shore near Clubhouse Drive as he cleared snow off his car late at night.

In other crime weekend crime news reported by Fairfax County Police’s Reston District Station:

  • Packing heat

Time to get that concealed carry licence.

Why go that far? Va is an Open Carry state.

And if you’re out after midnight on North Shore Drive, it seems like a damn good idea.

I, along with RA Board President and Cate Fulkerson, reported to the police evidence of criminal behavior in that immediate area about 8 weeks ago. This was before “Little Crazy” & Friends were arrested over at Winterthur. Those guys were arrested for selling pot, & using a car for illegal sex (use your imagination) and other gang related activity. The evidence we reported included little twisted up baggies, blunt wrappers, condom wrappers and discarded condoms and of course beer cans and broken bottles. This is happening along Fairway Dr., right at the intersection w/ North Shore. Damn near the exact midpoint of two recent robberies/assaults. The Fairway Apts are on the corner. I told Cathy Hudgins personally about the activity in the area. We have a growing problem here people. Anyone living in the neighborhood should call Hudgins and/or the police and request additional patrols.

Yes but did you also report the crazy shouting old white lady and the jaywalking white kids? They are criminals too you know.

I pick my battles Ming. Lately there are so many to choose from.

Bojangler, I share your frustration about the police. It’s alarming that we’re at the mercy of the county because I agree that they don’t seem to patrol much in Reston (except to hand out traffic tickets) and they take forever to show up when you do call them. I don’t get out much at night, but I have noticed that North Shore Drive (and Reston in general) has a serious lack of adequate street lighting. The lights that do exist are dim and have a very restricted radius, and they are spaced very far apart. Surely this contributes to the problem. I’m curious but does Reston have neighborhood watch groups?

No neighborhood watch groups that I know of. And yes, Reston can be dark. I think that was part of the original plan of Simon. I’d love to see more lights but I doubt it will ever happen.

Bojangler, I’m curious but when you spoke with the police, what is their reaction? Because I don’t see additional patrols. Then again, I’m not usually out late. My daughter often works late, and I asked her if she sees anything going on there, in the area you talk about, and she says it’s too dark to tell. If for some reason Fairway Apartments requires us to park on the street (rare, but last summer they repaved the parking lots), we tend to park our cars further down on Fairway, closer to the park, where the lighting is better. Not saying lighting is the magic solution, but it might be a good start.

Some years ago there was talk about more streetlights in Reston, but there was a great howl from various ninnies that street lights are ugly, polluting, destroyed our suburban ambience, etc.

Males with dark clothing aye? Hope they didn’t change their clothes since Saturday morning. We might still be able to catch them. In fact that matches the description of my co-workers.

Multiple times these type of assaults have occurred in the same spot on North Shore over the last 2 years.

    • Reston Watcher

      What spot? How many times?

      • Ming the Merciless

If you look at the county police department map, in the past 12 months there have been nine assaults on the stretch of North Shore between Wainwright and Fairway.

Worth noting that a LOT more assaults (fifty five in all) occurred in Reston Town Center during the same period. Not sure what to make of all the activity on the “11900 block of BOWMAN TOWNE DR” – probably the homeless beating each other up.

I just saw on NBC4 that a body has been found off Hiddenbrook Drive in Herndon, which is near the intersection of Wiehle and Dranesville Road. That is not near North Shore, but it just reminds me of more crime in the area. Weren’t there 2 other recent cases (like last 2-3 months) where remains were found in Herndon area? I never heard what the case was with either of those–foul play, etc. Man, if just seems like there are so many more assaults, murders–serious crimes in our area.

    • Karen Goff

I don’t recall any other bodies found in Herndon in last few months (and in any case we mostly just cover Reston on this site). Also, no word yet on whether body found met with foul play. Crime has remained about the same around here last few years according to police stats, so premise that it has drastically increased does not hold up.

      • RestonRed

This is the one I was immediately thinking of: http://www.wusa9.com/story/news/local/virginia/2015/02/09/possible-human-remains-found-in-herndon/23103731/ and while it is technically Herndon (like the place where the body was found today), I think many Reston residents likely drive through these areas regularly or have friends/neighbors. I pay attention to crime in our general area because criminals don’t stop just because they see a large green Reston sign.

        • Karen Goff

Interesting. For some reason I missed that one. Sorry about that. Today’s body is now up on our site though. https://www.restonnow.com/2015/03/16/dead-body-found-in-herndon-area/

          • Sue Brickman

Today’s body? There must be a more thoughtful phrasing.

        • Reston Watcher

The location of the body found back on Feb. 9 is only considered Herndon by the post office and television reporters who think they’ve gone deep into northern Virginia when they leave DC and make it out to Ballston. It was on the opposite side of Reston from Herndon, south of Reston off Folkstone between Fox Mill and West Ox. I never heard what they determined about the age of the remains.

        • Reston Watcher

Actually, you referred to two cases of bodies being discovered in Herndon. What was the other one?

Males wearing dark clothing …. color, weight, hair color, height? There are more than a million people living in Fairfax County – that description fits half the teen/adult population …. if the police want citizen input, give us something to work with.

    • GravyBoat

Let’s hope the suspects don’t just change their clothing. I wonder if they have any other characteristics which might be helpful. Oops, this probably came off as racist

  • June Smith

And when you offer nothing, you give the person a head start on his get away plan – there are more than 3 million people in the DC Metro area (30 mile radius) – lots of places to hide in plain sight when no one knows who they are looking for – other than a male in dark clothing – heck he doesn’t even have to change his clothes
