Police: Reston Trainer Took ‘Upskirt’ Video in South Lakes Safeway

Michael Wayne Edwards/FCPDA Centreville man who works as a trainer at a Reston gym was arrested last week after he allegedly followed a woman through the South Lakes Safeway and filmed an “upskirt” video of her.

Michael Wayne Edwards, 33, Centreville, works at Fusion360, a personal training gym a few doors down from the Safeway at South Lakes Village Center.

He has been charged with indecent exposure, simulated masturbation and filming a nonconsented nude person, court records show.

Here is what police said happened:

A woman who was shopping at Safeway reported to police that on Aug. 5, a man was following her in the store on more than one occasion.

The victim said as she walked back to work that day, the man, identified as Edwards, followed her as she walked near Sunrise Valley Drive and Lakespray Way. The man appeared to be videotaping and spoke to her. She recalled him to be the same person from the store.

The woman told police the man then reportedly exposed himself to her then he ran away. Officers identified the suspect and worked with store personnel to investigate.

Subsequently, an investigation determined that the suspect had filmed the woman under her clothing at the grocery store, said FCPD spokeswoman Lucy Caldwell.

Edwards told Reston Now on Tuesday “it wasn’t me. I did not do what she said.”

Edwards’ attorney, Lavonda Golden-Williams, did not immediately return calls.

This is not the first time Edwards has been accused of a sexually related crime. In 2010, he was charged with several accounts of second-degree assault after he squirted semen from a bottle on women as they exited a Giant and Michael’s craft stores in Gaithersburg, Md.

Edwards pled guilty to one of those charges (the rest were dropped as part of the plea deal). He was fined $500 and given a three-year suspended jail sentence, Montgomery County records show. His probation period ended in June 2014.

Holy Cow Batman…..what a disgusting individual …”squirted semen on people”
Please lock-up Batman/Creepman …I’m guessing his gym clients will have some stories also.

  • Bob Popper

wonder why Lavonda did’nt return any phone calls

  • Sheik Yerbouti

We can all thank the Peoples Republic of Maryland for releasing this pervert. I am sure he just had to pledge to vote (D) on election day and they released him.

Sounds like his prior is a bit of a sticky situation.

  • Ming the Merciless

So that whole thing about “Fairfax County is launching a program to reduce the number of mentally ill inmates in jail by diverting nonviolent offenders in crisis into
treatment.” — wonder if this guy would qualify?

No doubt our liberal overlords believe that having “nonviolent” pervs in “treatment” is better than jail, whatever the cost to the community. (#pervsmatter)

Also, “filming a nonconsented nude person” – the woman in Safeway was nude? I’m going to have to start shopping there…

  • Miggs

A water bottle with a handle would improve aim and increase distance! Why didn’t I think of that?

  • Chuck Morningwood

I thought it was ironic in a perverse kind of way that, at the bottom of the article, was a rollover add for KinderCare.

    • Word

I think its was kind of idiotic that you would make that comment but typical for you.

    • Heh

Give him some “credit” – he likes adult women. Though he really needs to work on his game. An alpha-looking man shouldn’t have to resort to squirt-bottle game and shoe-camera game… that’s for omega-male losers.

  • Mike M

    Ick!

I can say that this Safeway (my Safeway) is loaded with colorful personalities. It’s also a little icky how so many posters came out of the woodwork to comment on this nasty episode in such an adolescent and almost celebratory style. This creep followed the woman in the store and then down the street!

I agree this “non-violent” offender needs a cage that Democrats will refuse to provide.

See you at Safeway! You never know with whom you will be standing for twenty minutes while you seek to check out.

    • Chuck Morningwood

How can you say that? Most of the legislature is Republican. Don’t they share the blame?

      • Mike M

I think we are talking about Maryland letting this freak go. So, no in Maryland and Montgomery County in particular, we are talking Dems. Republicans have the stomach to punish people for doing bad things domewtically or abroad.

I am not a Repubican but they get my vote most of the time because Democrats are weak in the face of menace and they flirt with Socialism when they are not making passionate love to it.

    • Mike M

Hey boss lady, see the last two paragraphs of the article. Check out the link provided. There is a history with that employee. I have daughters who walk around that store. What did you bring into the neighborhood? I stand by my comments. You want to run a business, you might think twice about what you say.

    • shagga

you might want to checkout that towel he used to wipe down the equipment with, it might explain why he appeared so “normal” at the gym.

    • Nyla J.

Madam President, would you care for another tasty water bottle during your workout? – Mike

  • LaffyTaffy

Wow, haven’t heard a creeper story like this in awhile, what an abysmal failure! I like how he’s wearing a batman shirt in this picture. It’s comforting knowing that someone like this with his history was able to find work being incredibly close to women all day, “great job” Fusion360! Hope no one accepted any water bottle offers from him during their hard work out 🙁

I really hope some how the police can get a warrant to search his computer, just imagine what they’ll find. I wonder what his parents think of all this?

    • Gregg Rosenberg

I know several women who have trained with Mike and have had nothing but good experiences. If the charges are true, it will be shocking and sad to most, who will pray he gets help. Fusion360 itself is a great little gym. Life and people are complicated. As for his parents, if this were your son, you would still love him as I’m sure they do.

      • LaffyTaffy

I wonder what type of experience the female victim of Michael Wayne Edwards had at Safeway or the other women in Gaithersburg MD had?

I agree that he needs help, hopefully he’ll get it, and while in the process will be removed from society.

    • I have been a client of Fusion 360 for over a year and I AM A WOMAN. All the staff-male & female-are Extremely PROFESSIONAL.

      • Mike M

        You forgot the exclamation points.

      • Nyla J.

All the staff, except the semen-squirting, upskirt filming ones.

    • Ming the Merciless

You have to wonder, especially if you are a customer of Fusion360, if he did the “camera on shoe” thing, did he do the “camera in women’s locker room” thing, too. Perhaps his hard drive will have the answer.

      • vm

Fusion360 doesn’t have locker rooms, get your facts first.

        • Ming the Merciless

Irrelevant. They have a ladies room of some kind.

  • kate1978

I have been a member of Fusion360 since March 2014 and my experience has been great and everyone there has been nothing but professional.

  • Rose

I find this very difficult to believe. Everyone at Fusion 360 is like family. Please don’t jump to conclusions. This is not the man we all know and love.

  • LakeNewportLady

This guy is disgusting. The people who are saying “this isn’t the Mike we know”…ummm he has already been convicted of prior disgusting offenses so in the slim chance this wasn’t him he’s already a convicted creeper. Good to know there are no background checks done on personal trainers.

    • Gregg Rosenberg

I don’t think the reactions of people who know him are necessarily about his innocence. Mike’s past actions indicate he’s struggling with something destructive inside him. I believe in second chances. I think most of us do. If he’s losing his struggle with whatever compulsions he feels, I get the sense people who know the other sides of him think that is very sad and want to say what they know: he didn’t show this side in his professional life. I take their comments as being more about not demonizing a person by reducing them to his or her worst problem.

      • Mike M

Ladies and gentlemen, the original Liberal sin! It speaks for itself. (Note the victim is not present in the apologia.)

    • Sarah

There were background checks done. Mike and the owner Joel worked together at Equinox. They knew what he was convicted of and what he did. They didn’t care. They knew they were putting every woman at risk when they hired him

  • BForman

Great reporting , Karen ! I don’t know the individual charged, but I hope your reporting acts as a deterrent to other predators and local screw ups. If the charges pan out, I hope he gets the help he needs. Perhaps Hilary or Bernie will support the kind of programs that will rehabilitate this man and help him be a productive member of society.

    • Mike M

What sort of programs have shown they can do that, Biff? I mean in the real planet earth world?

      • Ming the Merciless

        Chemical castration, maybe.

  • Liz B

I have worked out at Fusion 360 for over a year and LOVE it and everyone there. They are professionals with heart, and I feel better than I did 20 years ago! I knew Mike to be an excellent trainer and a great individual. This is tremendously sad, but what he did or did not do on his own casts no shadow on Fusion 360 and the other excellent trainers there.

  • Kim

I train at fusion 360 and trained with Mike once a week. The gym and the staff are very professional and The personal training there is the best I have ever experienced. Mike was very professional every time I saw him and he never said or did anything that made me Feel uncomfortable or think there was anything concerning.I am very sad to hear about this situation and I really do hope he didn’t do what he is accused of doing. The most important point I make is that Fusion 360 is an amazing business and I am a very happy customer. I will continue to be a loyal customer and I dont feel any differently about this gym other than it will move forward and continue to be excellent.

  • lordhelmet

The lack in common sense from people defending this person with mental sickness. Of course Mike will act normal cordial and professional when at his job or in public areas among friends. People who say he has never done this or that, can you honestly say you really knew him outside his professional work space or in a common place such as the gym where he will have “friends”? Plus the ones defending him are mostly clients so of course he needs to keep up appearances to keep making the business $$. Also he is a trainer his job is to be motivational and
uplifting because who wants a trainer who is going to bring them down.

There are a lot of criminals and people with mental sickness in the news who
will always have defenders or people who knew the suspect saying “I never knew the person was capable of such crimes” or “I’m in shock and don’t believe he did it”, “He was such a nice guy always said hello”.

For example Ariel Castro the bus driver who kidnapped three women and held them prisoner in his home for 10 years beating and raping them, “We see this dude everyday. I’ve been here a year. I barbecued with this dude. We eat ribs and listen to salsa music,”….

The common link with Mike is he is a REPEAT offender and when arrested in 2010 he also at first DENIED spraying the women with his attorney saying he would be
vindicated. In the end more victims came forward, one linked him to a 2009 incident and he was convicted of 2 of the 5 charges.

Fairfax county police has evidence against him which I am assuming is store surveillance since the police charged him with filing person nude without consent after they returned to the store during their investigation and saw he was trying to film up her skirt. A common link between this current crime and the one in 2010 is he likes to take video of his sexual crimes.

I am sure if this was your wife, daughter, friend etc…. the defenders would have a difference of opinion. Be honest with yourself he did it, there are too many commonalities between his 2010 crime and this one. There is probably hard evidence proving so just like in 2010.

As far as Fusion360 they probably knew who they may or may have not done there due diligence when hiring Mike. They Obviously mis-spelled his last name leaving off the “S” in his last name, Edward instead of Edwards. If they knew about his past and believed him when he denied it or was giving him a second chance then it is the risk they took as a business owner where the business allows close contact between employees and clients. Given his past I probably would have not taken the risk given the type of crime he was convicted of in 2010. And those who say they never saw him do anything out of the ordinary and maybe because you never saw him doing it because he was never caught doing it because he was being careful. Just like the women probably never noticed him trying to take video until the cops probably saw him on survalience doing so.

    • Gregg Rosenberg

FWIW, I think it shows a lot of common sense to defend a person with a mental sickness, not to mention compassion. These are people who need defending because it’s so easy to demonize people who are mentally ill. Having a compulsive or impulse disorder — which is what someone who does these sorts of things has — is no different than having liver disease except for the bad luck that the affected organ is the brain. My heart goes out to the women who were impacted by this behavior, and also I can recognize that the perpetrator’s illness may not be the sum total of his character or life.

      • lordhelmet

Yes you’re right about people need defending and common sense when it comes to defending someone with a mental illness. Demonizing? No I am stating facts that he a repeat offender, while others who defend him may not know that and think this is his first offense. The people here defending him based there defense on a working client relationship. Not the fact he may have a mental illness or know him outside of a client/employee capacity. What if outside of work in his personal life he is a out of control? Also Your analogy of a person with a physical disease and mental illness is different. His brain isn’t dying and isn’t infected, he is also capable of harming others. It’s not a disease it’s an illness, an illness where he need to be watched like a hawk for a period of time before being released. I don’t see a person with cancer or liver disease going out harming anyone else just because they have a disease. He is harming women physically and emotionally and putting the public at risk.

We can go on and say there are plenty of mentally ill people roaming free, but in this case Mike got caught and doesn’t deserve to be free if he is continuing to harm others. Think about how that women may feel knowing she was being followed, if she was scared or now maybe emotionally impacted to a point where her everyday life will not be the same.

Given the nature of his crime and the fact this is not the first, second or third time makes me concerned that if he isn’t going to receive a harsher punishment and forced to receive therapy while in Jail then what will happen when he has a relapse? or again released on probation? Will he take it to the next step of abuse? Rape? Murder?

Just like the example I gave with Ariel Castro, everyone thought he was just the average Joe, defending his Character until everyone found out he had 3 women locked up in his house for over 10 years.

When Mike was caught in 2010 they linked him to reports dating back to a year earlier in the spring/summer of 2009. Makes you think of the actual number of women he assaulted between 2009-2010. Then now in 2015 who knows how many others there are, he was just caught this time by a person who was aware of her surroundings.

He needs to go to Jail and needs to get help. This is a public safety issue.

        • Gregg Rosenberg

I share and appreciate your concern for women who could be victimized by behaviors like this. I don’t think the posters who have replied here about their experiences with Michael or at Fusion360 are trying to adjudicate the case. I’ve read them more as saying the gym has provided a very professional and effective environment, and whatever illness is behind this is not the sum total of who Mike is.

While you say you don’t want to demonize mental illness, you go on to suggest this behavior could be a gateway to sociopathic behaviors like murder, rape, kidnapping and torture. To me, with all due respect, that is the very definition of demonizing someone who does the sorts of things we’re talking about here. I’m not aware that this kind of behavior has anything to do with violent psychopathology. I believe it has more in common with compulsive and impulse disorders, like non-violent addictions and fetishes. As a behavioral disease or illness, people with this sort of problem perhaps have more in common with alcoholics than murderers. They have to learn to live with their urges without “falling off the wagon” and, when they do, they can be a danger to others as well as themselves, so have to be dealt with. But they are not demons, as people they are much more than just the illness, and it is not impossible to get the problems under control.

          • lordhelmet

Haha ok I am still not demonizing like you say I am. Purely stating facts based on his past and current crimes. I did not directly call him a rapist, murder kidnapper, but stating there is potential if he is not incarcerated and treated. .

Since this is not the first incident, but the 6th victim between 2010 and 2015 that the police know about it is safe to say he already demonized himself, meaning he already made himself out to be a threat in the eyes of the public.

You cannot dispute if you’re suggesting his problem is like
a person who suffers from non-violent addictions like alcoholism, you can also then relate it to a person with a drug addiction. With any addiction or fetishes there is a threshold of satisfaction. Once the current level of satisfaction is met then there is a great possibility that person will seek out the next highest level of satisfaction. Then what if that satisfaction is not met? Or met with resistance? You think he will just give up? What if the victim refused or aggressively fights back? Will he aggressively attack until he gets what he wants? You cannot safely say yes or no without knowing
            the severity of his illness.

And violence and risk can be associated to the mentally ill who suffer compulsive and addictive disorders. It is one of many behaviors associated with sexual addiction
and disorders and an action that is possibly taken once they reach a certain level satisfaction if left untreated. Just like a drug addict needing the next big high.

Also based on the press release the victim stated she had seen Mike on other occasions in Safeway and felt like he was watching her, but on those other occasions she did not report him because she didn’t feel like anything criminal was taking place at the time. So based on his recent crime and the previous one in 2010, this time it might be safe to say he picked out his victim where in 2010 he was randomly choosing multiple victims. His record does show he was arrested in 2012 for trespassing after forbidden and profanity over an air way, same incident. So once again he is already making himself out to be threat in the eyes of others and more importantly to the law.

I am going to call you out suggesting you have more of a
personal relationship then you’re leading on or a personal connection with Mike through others who know him when you’re leading on, by stating “I know several women who have trained with Mike and have had nothing but good experiences.” Downplaying what he did by saying other women had nothing but good experiences. Yes it
is sad, but he could very well be a psychopath or sociopath outside of his professional life and only physicist will be able to diagnose him. Like I said before there are a lot of mentally ill people roaming free and he doesn’t deserve to be free considering his history.

Face it Mike is going to Jail this time around and in this world people will be looking at him as an Evil, Vial, nasty, sick, disturbed creep. Hopefully this time around he will have family members or someone more involved in his
life to help him keep out of trouble

As knowing victims of rape and abuse I am not very accepting of what he did or his excuse as to why. He needs to be off the streets until he can get the help he needs while incarcerated or at least suffer some heavy consequences this time around because he will be out on the streets again and known to be a repeat offender. What he did to those women will forever haunt them, they possibly may have
had to seek therapy to live a normal functioning life again.

          • Gregg Rosenberg

Well, I’ll just let your reply stand as an example of exactly what demonizing someone looks like. Throwing up a lot of fog which conflates non-violent impulse disorders with violent psychopathic disorders, as if one were a gateway behavior to the other, is exactly what demonizing people is.

My relationship to Mike is exactly what I said it is in another comment. I know several women who had trained with him and swear up and down about his professionalism with them, as well as other laudable character traits. These women are devastated to learn about his problems and stand by him as friends, hoping he gets help to whatever extent he needs it. As I’ve said in another comment, people are complicated and can’t be reduced to nothing but their worst problems.

  • Elizil

So I wonder what the judge will give ok’ Mikey the Perv, if anything, for the simulated masturbation (faked jerking off) charge. Any guesses? 🙂

  • GTHSBB Momma

He had yet another arrest for a September upskirting incident at another Reston grocery store, and is under investigation for an assault in a Centerville commuter lot where he directly “released himself” onto a woman. His behavior is escalating and accelerating. He needs to be quarantined from society before his behavior escalates to violent crimes.

  • Sarah

Fusion 360 is a lie itself. The one they lead you to believe is the owner is not. The owner is the head trainer. He just doesn’t want to deal with all the drama clients have so he puts it on someone else. The pretend owner has no background in training and has no idea what she is doing. She was a client of the real owner at Equinox. They both knew Mike as he trained at Equinox as well. They both knew when they asked Mike to join fusion 360 that Mike had done what he was accused of. They didn’t care. They didn’t care that there clients were next to a sexual offender every day. They care about money and the only way to produce more money was to have another trainer.
