Updated, 10:44 p.m. Monday to correct address of gas station.

A man reportedly set himself on fire at the Sunoco at 2150 Centreville Rd. in Herndon on Monday afternoon.

WJLA-TV reports the man, age 50, bought 56 cents worth of gas and then set himself on fire at the gas station near Kohl’s department store. More than a dozen witnesses tried to put the fire out, another witness said.

He was airlifted to Medstar Washington Hospital Center. The man had burns on 80 percent of his body and was pronounced dead at the hospital, reports WJLA.

The man has not been identified.

    worse Richard Pryor impression, ever.

This incident happened at 2150 Centreville Road, not 640 Elden Street. Also, after speaking to FFX county police it appears the amount of money he spent on the money on gas is wrong…not that it really matters. I pray for his family.

The address has been corrected. There are two Sunocos pretty close together. Sorry about that.

if this had happened on sunday I would of assumed his wife dragged him to kohls to go shopping instead of letting him stay at home to watch football.

Awesome, way to make a sick joke after somebody brutally kills them-self in one of the most painful ways humanly possible.

What terrible thing happened to you to make you want to write such a messed up comment?

I feel bad for the people who witnessed it and tried to put him out with water bottles. I also feel bad for the family, but I hope they get a discount on cremation.

Light a man a fire and he’s warm for the day. Light a man ON fire and he’s warm for the rest of his life

Why not release his name? Was he trying to set off an explosion? Kudos to those trying to help.

He certainly deserves a rebuke for dispensing gasoline into an unapproved container.

Bystanders used Deer Park bottled water to try to put the fire out.
