BREAKING: Two-Car Crash Closes Sunrise Valley Drive

by Karen Goff July 8, 2016 at 10:00 am 11 Comments

Sunrise Valley Drive Westbound between Upper Lake Drive and Headlands Circle is closed Friday morning as police investigate a two-car accident.

The accident occurred about 9 a.m. Investigators said two cars may have been trying to pass a Fairfax Connector bus when they collided and one of the cars flipped.

The drivers of both cars were transported to a nearby hospital with non-life threatening injuries, police said. The bus driver was uninjured and the bus received minor damage.

Police said the road will be closed until at least 11 a.m. for accident investigation and vehicle removal.

poor road planning, combined with idiot drivers, incompetent bus drivers, equals these types of situations. That area has become a bottle neck and gets more dangerous each day. I feel sorry for folks that live near that stretch of sunrise valley. The whole whiele corridor has turned into one big cluster fu*k…It will only get worse.

I live about 1/8 of a mile from where the accident happened- I actually haven’t experienced that section of Sunrise being that bad with traffic. Sunset Hills is usually much, much, much worse. I absolutely agree that it’s just a matter of time until it gets worse on my side of the toll road tho!

I had the same surprise. How DO you flip a car here? The car looks just like my daughter’s so, I nearly puked when I saw the headline and photo.

Usually it’s pedestrians and bikers running risks at this site. Last night I nearly ran down a woman running with her back to traffic in this very location. She was literally three feet into the road. She had a reflective stripe on her back that I could not see until nearly upon her. I didn’t even have time to shout at the idjit. A few months back a kid zoomed out near Upper Lakes on a skateboard with plugs in his ears. Someone almost clobbered him.

Twin yellow flags as the Reston Grand Prix has been stopped temporarily due to collision involving the pace bus. All drivers to report to their pits.

Don’t know what part of 35 mph speed limit people don’t understand.

    • Rob

Agreed. It’s difficult to flip a car without a ramp at 35 MPH

  • Chuck Morningwood

Maybe Sunrise Valley needs to be put on a road diet.

    • Greg

it definitely needs more street lights and speed enforcement.

  • Arielle in NoVA

Yikes! Glad the drivers will be OK. They weren’t trying to play Pokemon GO while driving, were they?

  • Jennifer Walter

I live and work just about where the accident happened. Sunrise Valley is a congested road that people drive way to fast on. There was an accident right by that spot just yesterday at Sunrise and South Lakes. Only going to get worse with the addition of the high rises down the road.

Just observe the speed limits and your car won’t flip over. Quit the tail gaiting while you are at it. Impatient people going nowhere fast.
