Police say a Herndon man sprayed a group of middle-schoolers with pepper spray while on the Washington & Old Dominion Trail in Ashburn last week.

According to the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office, 47-year-old Marcos A. Catalan sprayed the kids as he passed by them on a bicycle in the area of Gloucester Parkway at about 4:05 p.m. Thursday:

A group of middle-school aged children were in the area of the Washington and Old Dominion trail. A cyclist approached and reportedly was holding a can in his hand. As the cyclist passed, he sprayed what the juveniles believed to be pepper spray in the direction of several of the children. Deputies located the cyclist in the area of the W & OD trail and Ruritan Circle.

Two girls were taken to a local hospital and treated, according to police. Catalan was charged with two counts of malicious injury by use of caustic substance, along with one count of attempted malicious injury in the same manner.

In Herndon, HPD says a robbery took place on Aug. 28 after two people provided a ride to a pair of strangers. When they arrived at the destination, in the 500 block of Florida Avenue, three suspects robbed the victims of personal property valued at about $125. The suspects are described as tall black males; one was wearing a white tank top, one was wearing a green hoodie and the third was wearing a buttoned-down shirt. The case remains under investigation.

In Loudoun County, in addition to the above W&OD Trail incident, several other recent crimes ended with arrests of men from Herndon.

On Aug. 26 at about 7:44 p.m., LCSO deputies responded to the 27000 block of Gum Spring Road in Chantilly for a report of a vehicle driving recklessly in the area and the vehicle was found on the side of the roadway with a flat tire. The driver, 26-year-old Daniel J. Lee, 26, was charged with driving under the influence of drugs, possession of marijuana, possession of a controlled substance and possession of a concealed weapon.

On Saturday, police say a vehicle that had its keys left inside was stolen from the 46000 block of Stonehelm Court in Sterling. The vehicle was reported to have struck a parked vehicle nearby, along with several mailboxes in the neighborhood, before it was found running in a driveway. Deputies located the suspect, 18-year-old Brandon Hernandez, and charged him with public intoxication, underage possession of alcohol and hindering a police investigation.

Another Herndon 18-year-old was arrested in Loudoun County on Monday morning after it was reported that he jumped on the hood of a vehicle and smashed out the windshield. The suspect was identified as Alex J. Czernowski, who was charged with destruction of property, public intoxication, underage possession of alcohol and obstruction of justice.

on the peper spray story i,m curious if the teens were threatning him?If so he has a reason to protect himself.Pepper spray is used by postman, cops, and is legal(last i heard) to use as a self defense detterrent. Some women carry it in their purses to protect against rape.Because it,s a non lethal detterent i question why he,s being charged.Unless this was an intentional act than thats different.

I thought the same, but the story reads as if he just rode by and sprayed the kids. Maybe there is something we’re missing from the incident.

  • Why do you bother?

What idiots are leaving GUNS in a CAR????
