The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors approved $500,000 to cover preliminary engineering for interim improvements at the intersection of Fairfax County Parkway and Sunrise Valley Drive.

Planned upgrades include lane reconfiguration, signal optimization and improvements to pedestrian and bike facilities.

Depending on the option selected by individuals, the project is expected to cost between $2.2 million and $4.3 million. The board approved intersection improvements as part of Reston’s transportation funding plan in late February last year.

The timeline of the project was not immediately available.

Repainting to include a few bike lanes won’t alleviate the traffic Issues
Based on past experience, it will make them worse

This isn’t painting bike lanes. It’s a major redesign and reconfiguration of that intersection which, along with the Reston Parkway/Sunrise Valley intersection are two of the very worst in the County.

Please tell us how a “major redesign and reconfiguration of that intersection” will be completed for between $2.2 and $4.3 million.

The simplest of fixes would pave the muddy ditch here so that there is a complete southbound lane from the toll road to Sunrise Valley. Whatever brainiac decided to put that bump out there should be fired.

Also, the traffic lights are the toll road are the root of the problem. They favor the toll road off ramps needlessly, especially during rush hours.

Your comment was about bike lanes. That was what I was responding to. To see the design and plans, you can go to the Fairfax County DOT website.

Where did I comment about bike lanes?

        My bad

  • PondViewer

Enough with the bike lanes! Been raining for 5 days – no bikers on the road. November through March – few, if any, bikers on the road. Forget the few cyclists and concentrate on improving vehicular accesses. Listen to the voters not the bikers!

Bike lanes are covered in pollen sludge debris sticks glass, all four lanes open for SuV traffic

      • The Constitutionalist

What the hell is a pollen sludge debris sticks glass?

    • OneReally

Not in utopian socialism. Sorry I meant Reston. Inside voice was speaking to loud.

We are decades and hundreds of millions of dollars away from seeing this intersection fixed properly.
