This biweekly column is sponsored by The Mather in Tysons, Virginia, a forward-thinking Life Plan Community for those 62 and better.

How does your plan for the future look? If you’re a planner, you’ve already got your investments and assets figured out, and your estate plan in order. But there are other important aspects of planning that are often ignored — such as laying the groundwork for your future quality of life.

More and more people are considering the solid advantages of Life Plan Communities. These age-restricted, amenity-rich communities invite people to live on their own terms, enjoying a host of services and opportunities, along with the added benefit of access to on-site health care services, if ever needed.

A local example of this is The Mather, a Life Plan Community opening in early 2024 in Tysons, Virginia, for those 62 and better.

An Engaged Lifestyle

Because you move into a Life Plan Community while you’re independent, you can take full advantage of the rewarding benefits of living there. At The Mather, residents will enjoy amenities such as:

  • A fitness center with cardio and strength-training equipment, group classes, personal training options, and more
  • A heated, saltwater lap pool, whirlpool, and sauna
  • Inspiring social, educational, and cultural programs, such as digital media workshops, live music, art technology seminars, and featured lecturers
  • An art studio for exploring creativity through art classes and collaborative Open Art Studio sessions
  • A spa offering signature services like facials and massage, with a Himalayan salt wall and more

These and other amenities and services are designed to meet the needs and desires of today’s older adults — and they also support overall wellness.

Proven Benefits

A national, five-year study revealed clear associations between living in a Life Plan Community and enjoying better health. The Age Well Study is a large-scale national study conducted over five years by Mather Institute, involving a total of 8,228 residents living in 122 Life Plan Communities around the US.

The Age Well Study compared the health and well-being of people who live in Life Plan Communities to a demographically similar sample of older adults living in the community at large. The findings reveal that residents of Life Plan Communities reported better physical, emotional, intellectual, social, and vocational wellness than their community-dwelling counterparts over a five-year span, with more favorable ratings in social and intellectual wellness in particular.

Highlights of the findings include:

  • In Year 5, Life Plan Community residents exhibited better self-reported health and higher levels of moderate physical activity compared to older adults from the community at large.
  • From Year 1 to 5, social contact significantly increased for residents.
  • From Year 1 to 5, overall engagement in intellectual activities significantly increased for residents and decreased for older adults in the community at large.
  • Changes in emotional and spiritual wellness were more favorable for older adults in the community at large, while the two groups reported similar changes over time in physical and vocational wellness.

The Age Well Study’s statistical models examined 1) differences in wellness between groups (residents from Life Plan Communities vs. older adults from the community at large), 2) changes in wellness over time (Year 1 vs. Year 5), and 3) whether the changes in wellness were different for Life Plan Community residents compared to the community-at-large respondents. Analyses controlled for age, gender, income, education, and marital status.

The increase in social contact within Life Plan Communities is not surprising, since in a community like The Mather it’s easy to find neighbors with similar interests to form a hiking club, theater-going group, or other social groups.

These research findings support the fact that, for those making a plan for their future, Life Plan Communities like The Mather are worth a closer look.

The Mather, projected to open in Tysons, VA, in early 2024 for those 62 and better, is a forward-thinking Life Plan Community that defies expectations of what senior living is supposed to be.

If you’re like me, I’m sure you love to create experiences with your family and friends while they’re in town or even better have an amazing day with your kids while they are out of school on Thanksgiving break.

Whatever the case, creating the perfect D.C. day is a must! I mean, let’s be honest, I’m sure you know someone who is a local, but hasn’t yet experienced all that D.C. has to offer. I mean it is our nation’s capital and people travel from all over the world to experience it, so why aren’t you?

A little secret about me, I spent over 15 years selling D.C. as a destination for conventions at Destination DC, so I have a passion and love for our nation’s capital and all things travel. Also, an insider’s perspective on why D.C. is an amazing place to visit and create memories. If you are ready to venture over the bridge, then here we go! Two of my favorite itineraries!

Experience D.C. Day 1 — The National Mall

I know so many locals that just forget how beautiful our city is and have not been to the National Mall in so long! I took all 3 of my kids in for this exact fun day and let’s just say it inspired me to write this column!

  1. Washington Monument (Plenty of street parking just reach out to me and I can always give you some pointers.) My kids love playing tag on the green space or even just rolling down the hill.
  2. Head over to the Lincoln Memorial. While capturing all the beauty along the way, make sure to get a glimpse of the World War II MemorialDistrict of Columbia War Memorial, Korean War Veterans Memorial, Vietnam Veterans Memorial, and the NEW S. Park Police Horse Stables (my twins favorite).
  3. A day spent on the National Mall means packing lots of snacks and enjoying some of D.C.’s best known food trucks or museum eateries. The National Museum of The American Indian and US Holocaust Memorial Memorial Museum both have great food options that do not require museum entry tickets.

Experience D.C. Day 2 — Favorites with a Seasonal Flair

The itinerary for Day 2 shifts the focus away from the Mall while still offering unique D.C. experiences.

  1. Planet Word Museum (Time Entry Tickets available). Ideal for all ages, their tagline is “The museum where language comes to life.”
  2. Pick up gifts for family and friends at the DC Holiday Market in Penn Quarter/Chinatown.
  3. Compass Coffee (We all need coffee at this point.)
  4. The mission of the National Portrait Gallery is “to tell the story of America by portraying the people who shape the nation’s history, development and culture.”
  5. Grab an amazing Lunch or Dinner at Jaleo and Zaytinya (2 of my fav).
  6. Ice Skating in the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden (November 20, 2023 — March 3, 2024)
  7. I am a hotelier at heart so of course I am going to recommend 3 hotels to consider adding to your day or evening, all within walking distance of this day’s itinerary. Keep in mind I am referring to grabbing a beverage or an appetizer, or just walking through the lobby space to capture the holiday decor.
    • Riggs is a remarkable landmark hotel that has a unique speakeasy that is guaranteed to offer a unique experience.
    • Waldorf Astoria is a breathtaking hotel that has a style and elegance you will not regret checking out.
    • The iconic Willard Hotel is definitely a hotel that cannot be duplicated with the amount of history and elegance. They are known for their High Tea; I can tell you from personal experience it is phenomenal.

If you love this and would like more insight, please reach out to me. Also, Destination DC is the one resource you need to bookmark, so please be sure to visit washington.org to create captivating memories with experiences that can only happen in D.C.!

This is a sponsored column by attorneys John Berry and Kimberly Berry of Berry & Berry, PLLC, an employment and labor law firm located in Northern Virginia that specializes in federal employee, security clearance, retirement and private sector employee matters.

By Melissa L. Watkins, Esq.

One of the more common issues that arise for employees, applicants, and contractors who have or are applying for a security clearance is the issue of illegal drug usage. However, recently, there has been an uptick in agencies paying attention to employees, applicants, and contractors’ use of a less common substance, inhalants.

While many individuals pay attention to and understand their duty to report prior illegal drug use, many are unaware that there are other types of use, involving substances that are not considered illegal or covered by the Controlled Substances Act, that may impact the security clearance process.

In recent years, there has been a trend towards agencies considering misuse of substances, even if the substance is not technically illegal. These agencies have suggested that such use may need to be disclosed on the Standard Form 86 and have indicated that the use may create a basis for someone being denied a security clearance.

What are inhalants, you may ask? This question is the starting point for why this area of focus by agencies is complicated and difficult to navigate. The word actually covers a variety of substances that are consumed, as the name suggests, by inhaling. There is not necessarily a finite or specific list of what substances qualify as inhalants from agencies’ perspectives. However, a starting point for the conversation would be the security questionnaire itself, currently referred to as the Standard Form 86.

The Standard Form 86 contains a section where individuals are asked to disclose their prior involvement with various substances. Under the list of substances, there is a category for inhalants where only two examples are provided: toluene and amyl nitrate.

Toluene is the substance most often associated with paint thinners. Amyl nitrate, a controlled substance requiring a prescription, was previously an ingredient in “poppers” but has not been used in that manner since 1988. However, neither of these two substances are generally what is being consumed when people are engaging in the use of inhalants.

Most people using inhalants recreationally are using “poppers” or “whippets”. Poppers is a slang term that refers to the chemical class called alkyl nitrites that are inhaled. While similar in sound to amyl nitrates, the substance listed on the Standard Form 86, this is a distinct chemical compound. Whippets refers to nitrous oxide (also known as laughing gas). The name is in reference to whipped cream canisters, which contain little chargers that are filled with nitrous oxide. Both substances can be purchased from retail establishments, do not include the substances mentioned on the Standard Form 86, and are generally not considered to be illegal.

However, there are some laws in place regulating the production and sale of ingredients in some inhalants. For example, it is lawful to manufacture and sell products made with Isobutyl (including alkyl nitrites or “poppers”) for commercial purposes but such production and sale is prohibited for human consumption. This is why you may see “poppers” or “whippets” being sold as products labeled for other uses such as whipped cream canisters, room deodorizers, leather polish, or nail polish remover, to name a few. However, the laws currently in place do not relate to the person who may end up using the substance.

Given the gray area around the substances, individuals who have engaged in such use and who hold a security clearance or intend to apply for a security clearance should seek legal advice on whether their specific use should be reported and how such use may impact their clearance process.

Our law firm advises government contractors and federal employees in the security clearance process. We can be contacted at www.berrylegal.com or by telephone at (703) 668-0070.

Riding a motorcycle is undoubtedly exhilarating. They are fast, fuel-efficient, and relatively easy to navigate.

However, with this thrill comes a lot of danger. Statistics have shown that motorcycle crashes are 30 times more likely to be fatal than vehicle crashes. Sometimes, riders are unfortunately treated as second-class road users, leading to increased accidents and fatalities.

Here are some tips for motorcyclists to stay safe on the road.

Always Wear Biking Gear

Motorcyclists are vulnerable road users. Unlike drivers, they do not have protection from impact during accidents. The only protection such motorists have comes from the gear they wear.

That said, it is vital to ensure that you are properly dressed. Many riders want to look “cool” and neglect wearing proper biking attire, a decision that might have catastrophic outcomes.

Never go for a ride without a helmet. Remember that head injuries cause most fatalities in bike crashes. Ensure that your helmet is DOT-approved, and if it is open-faced, use shatter-resistant glasses or goggles.

In addition, you can wear biking jackets, pants, and boots. These attires are made with leather, which will protect your body from injury or at least reduce the magnitude. You can also protect your hands with gloves.

Inspect Your Motorcycle

Make a habit of inspecting your motorcycle before hitting the road. Check that your brakes, tires, and lights are working as intended. Also, always do a short test ride, as it will help you detect mechanical hazards before you head out.

Riding a poorly maintained motorcycle is equally hazardous. Do not neglect the regular service and maintenance with your mechanic. Change your oil, chain, and other worn-out parts as soon as you realize they need replacing.

Pay Attention

Like other road users, motorcyclists are required to be attentive when riding. Avoid distracting habits like listening to loud music or using your phone.

Keep in mind that most accidents are caused by human negligence. As a motorcyclist, you must be on the lookout for distracted motorists and other potential hazards like gravel or bad roads.

Check The Weather

Always check the weather forecast before heading out. This will help you prepare for bad weather or avoid it altogether.

Adverse weather conditions like snow, ice, and rain increase the risk factor for motorcyclists. You might have a hard time focusing when exposed to these conditions.

Bad weather also reduces your bike’s grip on the ground. You could easily skid and crash. Finally, these conditions equally reduce visibility.

Follow Traffic Rules

Bikers are not exempted from obeying traffic rules. They must maintain order and keep all motorists safe. Therefore, the quickest way to cause an accident is to ignore road signs.

Always use turn signals when turning or changing lanes. Avoid making sudden movements on the road. Adhere to other road rules like observing the speed limit.

Follow other vehicles from a safe distance. This will give you enough time and space to react to unprecedented events. Motorcyclists are advised to equip their bikes with anti-lock brakes, which help steer safely in emergencies by preventing wheels from locking up.

Conclusion

Riders have the same rights and responsibilities as other road users. Therefore, they are responsible for their safety and that of others.

“A lot of motorcycle safety ultimately boils down to safety gear,” says attorney Walter T. Clark of Walter Clark Legal Group. “Ensure that you and your passengers have the right safety gear and are always focused on safety while on the roadway.”

If you’re looking for an easy way to improve your physical health and mood, just breathe.

The practice of breathwork, or the intentional manipulation of your breathing, has been gaining attention, thanks to the widespread popularity of yoga and meditation. However, researchers have been studying the benefits of breathwork for years.

“Breathing is not new — it’s the most essential thing we do for our bodies — but breathwork is a new approach to wellness,” says William Wesley Myers, Mather’s director of wellness strategies. Mather is a not-for-profit organization with three senior living communities that plans to open The Mather, a Life Plan Community in Tysons in early 2024.

Breathwork has many health benefits; you can use it to increase or decrease your energy, to calm your mind, and to help you focus, among many things.

“Physical benefits from deep breathing are often instantaneous,” explains William. “There is a direct relationship between breath rate, mood, and systems that activate our fight-or-flight or rest-and-restore responses, which directly affect heart rate, respiration, and digestion.” Research has shown that deep, mindful breathing carries benefits to these systems and more.

Emotional Health: One study showed that manipulating the breath can cause up to a 40% variance in emotions. Evoke joy by breathing and exhaling slowly and deeply through the nose. Other research shows breathwork can help to treat anxiety, PTSD, and severe depression, even in those who don’t respond well to antidepressants.

Blood Pressure: A regular practice of slow, deep breathing is an effective way to reduce blood pressure.

Stamina: An Italian study found that the lungs of mountain-climbers who practiced slow breathing an hour a day for two years maximized oxygen better, allowing the climbers to forego supplemental oxygen needed by others to summit Mount Everest.

Focus: Breath-focused yoga can sharpen participants’ attention spans and focus by changing brain chemistry.

Pain Management: Multiple studies have shown that slow, deep breathing can reduce perception of chronic pain, or help people cope with discomfort. Breathwork can be especially effective with back pain.

Longevity: Research has shown that breathwork improves metabolism and reduces inflammation — both of which contribute to longer life.

“People can all benefit from doing a little breathwork,” says William. “You can do some simple breathing exercises sitting on the edge of a chair with your feet flat on the ground. Even five minutes of breathwork offers benefits!”

The Mather, projected to open in Tysons, VA, in early 2024 for those 62 and better, is a forward-thinking Life Plan Community that defies expectations of what senior living is supposed to be.

Thanksgiving may be a month away, but every day is a good day to focus on feeling thankful. That’s because concentrating on feelings of gratitude helps you feel happier and more positive in the short and long term.

“Multiple research studies have examined the benefits of a simple gratitude practice,” says Jennifer Smith, PhD, AVP and director of research at Mather Institute. The Institute is the research arm of Mather, a not-for-profit organization with three senior living communities that plans to open The Mather, a Life Plan Community for those 62 and better, in Tysons in early 2024. The Institute is an award-winning resource for research and information about wellness, aging, trends in senior living, and successful aging service innovations.

“Gratitude can help us feel more connected to others, increase positive emotions, and reduce negative thoughts,” says Dr. Smith. “And emphasizing the positive can create more positivity.”

The Gratitude-Happiness Link

Many studies have linked higher levels of gratitude to more happiness and satisfaction with life; in other words, it seems the more one feels gratitude, the happier and more satisfied one feels in general. One study that earned an Innovative Research on Aging Award from Mather Institute points out that older adults consistently report the highest levels of gratitude, compared to middle-age and younger adults. That link between level of gratitude and overall life satisfaction does not change with age, which means those over age 60 have a “happiness advantage” due to their high levels of gratitude.

The good news is that you can practice gratitude at any stage of life to actually improve your happiness, positivity, and life satisfaction. One study showed that a regular habit such as daily journaling can enhance your long-term happiness by more than 10%.

Feelings of gratitude have also been shown to make us more resilient, boost optimism, increase self-esteem, and reduce depressive symptoms. Focusing your attention on the positives rather than the negatives — which is what a gratitude practice does — can actually switch your outlook for the long term.

Physical Health Benefits

Feeling grateful also carries some physical benefits. It seems obvious that feeling optimistic and generally positive would impact one’s blood pressure, and research confirms this. A study of people with hypertension who were asked to practice gratitude at least once a week showed a “significant decrease” in their blood pressure. A similar study showed that practicing gratitude can improve quality of sleep.

Give Gratitude a Try

If you want to enjoy the benefits mentioned here, try to focus on feeling grateful at least three times a week, if not daily. Here are some examples of habits you might adopt:

  1. Gratitude journal: Whether you use a special notebook or scrap paper, take time every day or evening to list five things you feel grateful for. Ideally, you’ll save your lists so you can look back on them over time. Reviewing them will also increase your positive feelings.
  2. Thank-you notes: Write a note or email to someone who has had a positive impact on your life — whether it was a single action or a lifetime of support. Expressing your gratitude in writing gives you a chance to think more deeply about your thankfulness — and will make the recipient happy!
  3. Gratitude meditation: Take some quiet time to reflect on what you’re grateful for, then examine the feelings brought up when you identify those items, people, or experiences. Focusing on what you value will bring moments of peace and joy.
  4. Share gratitude: Find a “gratitude buddy” — perhaps your spouse, child, or a close friend — and take turns listing a few things you are grateful for. This adds extra depth to gratitude, as you can build off of each other’s comments.
  5. Take a gratitude walk: Take a stroll and look for positive things — from the walkability of your neighborhood to appealing sights and friendly people.

Whether you’re a natural pessimist or an optimist, try a regular gratitude practice. It will improve your outlook right away, and could result in lifelong benefits.

Wallpaper got a bad reputation when flowery borders were all the rage in the 80s and 90s but it came back in a big way a few years ago. The reason for this explosion in popularity is the wide array of fantastic new designs that allow you to stretch your design muscle without breaking the bank.

In this first example, we used space in the hallway of this Reston home to add a much-needed powder room on the main level (guests previously had to use the kids’ hall bathroom). This Hygge & West “Petal Pusher” wallpaper was the perfect choice for this new space! Using black and white finishes that complement, not compete with, the wallpaper keeps the look fuss-free.

Still nervous about committing to wallpaper? Try using removable wallpaper and give yourself the flexibility to make changes without the hassle of removing traditional wallpaper.

 2. Have Fun With Floor Tile

Tile is another way to make a statement in a Powder Room and there are many reasonably-priced options available so that you don’t have to compromise on style while still achieving a designer look.

That being said, if you did want to splurge on some handmade or super-unique tile, what better place to do it than in the powder room where the square footage is smaller compared to a primary bathroom or guest bathroom?

In this townhome remodel, our clients opted for this gorgeous SomerTile “Majestic” encaustic-look floor tile in the pattern “Tiena Blue” from Mosaic Tile Company.  The blue “Mason” vanity by Design Element picks up the blue tones in the floor and brings the look together.

 3. Don’t Forget About Storage

It might be a small space, but don’t feel you have to go with a pedestal sink to make it feel larger than it is. There are tons of smaller, stylish vanities that still give you the room you need while providing a space to store extra supplies like bath tissue and guest towels if you prefer to have these items out of sight.

In this example, the “Danneberg” vanity in “Russet Brown” not only looks great, it provides plenty of storage. Note also the “Dunham” floor tile by Emser Tile. This is another great example of making a bold design statement with floor tile.

 4. Use Wood Details for A Classic, Finished Look

Sometimes, it takes just a few simple updates to completely transform a powder room and an inexpensive way to do that is by using wood trim in various ways. Whether it be shiplap (applied horizontally or vertically), chair rail or shadow boxing, these details may lean more classic and traditional, but they’ve been around a long time for a reason.

In this McLean home remodel, our clients had powder rooms on both the main and basement levels. In the basement, we kept their existing vanity but added shiplap wainscoting to the lower half of the walls which was painted with Benjamin Moore “Chantilly Lace” paint in a matte finish. We used Benjamin Moore “Kendall Charcoal” paint (also matte) on the upper half of the walls. These simple changes took this powder room to a whole new level.

 5. Make a Statement With Wall Tile

We’ve already talked about utilizing fun or unique tile on the floor, but splurging for wall tile is another way to take your little Powder Room to the next level of sophistication. Bright and bold, or subtle with calming hues, wall tile in the powder room just screams “wow!” as your guests enter the space! It’s also a great way to add personality while providing the opportunity to visually tie-in to other spaces in your home (i.e. complimenting a nearby kitchen backsplash or fireplace surround).

The homeowners in this Oakton home leaned towards a more transitional design. We used “Maiolica” tile in “White Crackle” by Roca Group in the kitchen as well as the powder room. It provides a cohesive feel across spaces but looks completely different when paired with natural marble “Arabescato Honed” hexagon floor tile from Mosaic Tile Company in the powder room.
