Daniel Stanley/FCPD PhotoA Reston man arrested for six counts of burglary may have been involved in as many as 16 crimes in the neighborhoods off North Shore Road.

Daniel Stanley, 26, was arrested by Fairfax County Police on Nov. 18 and charged with six counts of burglary and one count of possession of stolen property.

However, NBC4 obtained search warrant documents that show law enforcement officials believe he may have hit many more homes during daylight hours between August and November. Court documents show Stanley was targeting homes and apartments near his girlfriend’s home.

Police  said several laptops were stolen from the townhouses. One of the computers later showed up at a nearby pawn shop under Stanley’s name, so police  sought search warrants to search Stanley’s girlfriend’s home and car, police said. She has not been charged.

South Lakes High School Update, 10:20 a.m. — South Lakes High School principal Kim Retzer says the school was given the all-clear at 9:45 a.m. and classes in the 400 wing resumed as usual.

Original story:

A chemical spill caused two wings of South Lakes High School to be temporarily closed Monday morning as Fairfax County Police were called to the school for cleanup.

The spill, reportedly of a small amount of hydrochloric acid, occurred in one of the science labs prior to the school day, a school spokeswoman said. No students were injured and the police were called as part of school protocol. Two staff members in the lab at the time were taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure, a FCPS spokesman said.

Hydrochloric acid is is highly corrosive, can cause severe burns if it gets on skin and can be noxious to breathe, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control.

The two wings closest to the lab (the junior and senior subschools) were closed and students are relocated until the all-clear can be given.

The fire department was still on the scene as of 7:54 a.m.

Fairfax County Police Update,, 2:30 p.m. — Fairfax County Police say the suspects have been apprehended. School officials say secure building has been lifting and students will follow normal dismissal procedures.

Update , 1 p.m. — SLHS sent this email to parents at 1 p.m.

At the request of the FCPS Office of Safety and Security, we are currently in “Secure the Building” status at our school.  No one on school property is in any danger.  This precautionary step has been taken because of police activity in the surrounding neighborhoods.  “Secure the Building” requires us to cancel any outdoor activities, exterior doors remain locked and no one is allowed to enter or exit the building.  Staff and students are free to move about inside the building.  If you have any questions, please call the school office.

Original Story: Students at South Lakes High School and Langston Hughes Middle School were briefly on lockdown on Thursday after Fairfax County Police were searching nearby for a fugitive from a nearby traffic stop.

Police spokeswoman Lucy Caldwell said officers made a traffic stop about 12 p.m. on Whisperwood Glen Lane , which is directly next to the school properties. She said she did not know whether there were warrants out for the people in the car, whether they were armed or whether the community was in any danger.

But when the people in car fled, officers chased them by car and helicopter and the nearby schools were put on lockdown for about 10 minutes as a precaution, said Caldwell.

The schools are currently under secure building mode. Terraset Elementary School, located near the middle and high schools, is also in secure building mode.

Reston Now will update this story when more details become available.

Car damaged by deer collision/Photo Courtesy Fairfax County PoliceIt’s November, which means motorists should be extra aware of deer crossing area roadways.

Fairfax County wildlife officials want drivers to know that deer breeding season means an increased number of deer crossing the road.

From the Fairfax County Police Department:

Deer movements and behaviors may be unpredictable and deer-vehicle collisions are a serious public safety concern. November and December, statistically, have the highest number of crashes involving deer in Fairfax County and police warn residents to be aware.

In 2012, there were 27 crashes involving deer in the month of November, and a total of 140 deer-related crashes over the entire year. In 2013, there have been 118 deer-vehicle crashes so far.

The Fairfax County wildlife biologist and police urge motorists to be alert, drive with caution and remember these safety tips:

Watch for eye shine along roadsides. Deer travel in herds so if you see one, others may be near. Use high beams when traffic permits to spot them at a greater distance. Deer are most active between 6 and 9 pm. Deer crossing signs mark areas of high deer travel. Immediately begin to slow vehicle if you spot a deer.

If a deer jumps in your vehicle’s path, continue to reduce speed and grasp steering wheel firmly with both hands.

If a deer is stopped in the roadway, reduce speed and flash your headlights.Deer can become mesmerized or blinded by bright steady lights.

If a collision seems inevitable, attempting to swerve out of the way could cause loss of control and increase the chance of a more serious injury. This applies to all smaller animals, too.

Never depend on hood whistles, car horns, or other devices to scare deer out of your path.Several studies have shown that these methods do not always work.

If a deer is injured or killed, contact Fairfax County Police Department (non-emergency) at 703-691-2131.
