Here is what his people at Collie Rescue, Inc. has to say about him:

Meet Sampson! He’s a sweet boy who is 6 years old. He just came to CRI and we gave him a nice grooming and dental cleaning. We do know that this friendly guy has poor vision, so we are having a specialist check out his eyes. But so far, he seems to get around just fine.

He is super friendly, affectionate, and very sweet. He longs for attention and will sit on your feet and lean into you to ask for some hugs. Sampson loves to play with other dogs, both big and small. He is a wonderful big boy!

Meet Legacy, this week’s Reston Pet of the Week. Legacy is a rescue dog who found a happy home. Here is what owner Christine has to say about her:

Legacy is a 8-year-old rescue dog I adopted when she was a year old.

She picked me out at the animal shelter. Legacy got her name because she was abused and neglected before the shelter rescued her. I thought she had a story to tell, and a pretty fancy story is a Legacy.

She loves long walks and car rides. Legacy really enjoys playing in fresh snow of three or more inches. She will baseball slide through snow with her mouth open.

Legacy loves getting baths and getting her hair brushed. She always has a smile for everybody.

This week’s Reston Pet of the Week is Lina, a special pup in need of a new home. She is currently being fostered by a Reston resident. If she helps get Lina some forever friends, Lina’s new parents will get treats and gifts from our sponsor, Becky’s Pet Care.

Here is what foster mom Susan has to say about her:

Lina is a female hound mix who loves nothing more than a soft blanket to snuggle in, and she’s looking for her forever family!

She’s about 30 lbs. (but could stand to gain a few more) and very calm, gentle and sweet.

She’s approximately a year or so old and gets along well with other dogs. She’s been spayed and is excellent when crated. Lina especially enjoys poking around the backyard and meeting neighbors – she’s a Reston natural!

Lina was surrendered to a high kill shelter in South Carolina and brought here by Rural Dog Rescue. She’s been stressed by the all moves between foster homes and kennels and is currently being fostered here in Reston. We would love nothing more than for her next move to be into her permanent home we would keep her ourselves but our family raises service dogs for the blind so we don’t have room for another permanent pet.

If you or someone you know might be interested in adopting Lina, please email Susan at [email protected] for more information.

This week’s Reston Pet of the Week is Bailey, an senior dog with youthful vigor. Here is what his owner, Bart, has to say about him:

Bailey is 13 ½ years old now, but you’d never know it. He still lives to catch the ball or Frisbee, which we do every morning at the Baron Cameron Dog Park, rain, shine, snow, or sleet.

He’s a bit slower now, he’s lost his hearing, and his eye/mouth coordination is not what it used to be. He was the centerfielder, able to catch a ball thrown to him from 40 yards away. And smart? We stopped counting the number of words he understood after it went over 200. But he also understands categories, not just names of toys (e.g. a bone is not a toy).

He can also be a grump, as the morning dog park people will attest to, telling all those little pups to stay away. No time for play, he’s got work to do!

He does manage to relax at home some by keenly watching TV. His favorite show is golf, but he also loves horseracing. When he could hear, he would go to the TV when he heard his favorite commercial jingle (especially the Nasonex bee).

Here is Mowgli, a young pug who is this week’s Reston Pet of the Week. Here is what owner Melissa has to say about him:

Mowgli is a 2-year-old pug who still has his puppy vigor! He is the most social, happy dog you will ever meet. He enjoys going for walks by Lake Thoreau, chilling out with other canines at the Baron Cameron Dog Park, and meeting other pugs at the Reston and Northern Virginia Pug Meetups. Mowgli, alias “Bub,” is excited for the Pet Fiesta in May at the Town Center!

Sometimes Mowgli has cat-like qualities. He perches on the back of the couch to watch the people of Reston walk by on the trails outside while he drifts off to sleep. His pug snorts sometimes sound like kitten purrs.

Bub’s favorite treat is rawhides dipped in peanut butter. As soon as the peanut butter is gone, he’ll insist that you get him more. He appears to reach nirvana while chewing on sticks. He can’t wait for the warm weather to return so that he can bask in the sunshine again. If you see him out and about, feel free to give him a pet or a belly rub.

This week’s Reston Pet of the Week is Goomba, an English Bulldog puppy. Here is what his owner Heidi has to say about the little guy:

Meet Goomba, our new English Bulldog puppy!  He’s 9 weeks old.

He is our first puppy so we are learning and having a blast trying to keep up with him!

He’s full of energy and makes us laugh with his crazy expressions.

Goomba loves playing tug-of-war with his toys. He’s definitely mastered the “puppy dog eyes” that make you just melt. Everyone loves him and he loves attention from people.

Meet Stobust, this week’s Reston Pet of the Week. She is living out her golden years here in Reston. Here is what her owner, Emily, has to say:

I got Stobust when I was 5 years old — we found her outside a supermarket when she was less than a few weeks old. She has been by my side since day one. She recently turned 20 years old. Her days are very limited — but we are so lucky to still be able to shower her with love every day.

Stobust has a love for milk, ham, and canned cat food. She lays in front of the fire — or on top of any heated item — for as long as possible. During the summertime, she lays out on the front porch and cherishes the sun rays the beat down on her. If you let her, she will lay in your arms all day long.

This week’s Reston Pet of the Week is Angus, a human-sized Great Dane.

Here is what owners Kara and Chris have to say about their pet:

Meet Angus, our 2-year-old Great Dane. We brought him home when he was eight weeks old and 25 pounds. Now he is a whopping 130 pounds. He is a great big goofball and still acts like a puppy. He is so entertaining to have around the house and always makes us laugh at his antics.

His favorite things are destroying toys, sitting on laps, chasing sticks, catching snowballs, playing in the snow and swimming. Most of the time he is just a big couch potato though and loves snuggling on the couch. He typically takes over an entire side of our sectional couch. If you want to sit on the floor, watch out because he will come and plop all 130 pounds on you because he thinks he is a lap dog.

Angus is so good with our 2-month-old daughter. He is always going to her swing or crib to check on her and loves licking her head. We love him to pieces and he is such a sweetheart. He has been such a blessing in our lives and can’t imagine life without him.

This week’s Reston Pet of the Week is Brady, a puppy who is going end up being a big guy.

Here is what his owner, 10-year-old Alysa, has to say about him:

Brady is a 5-month-old puppy. He is a very energetic puppy.

Brady is the perfect dog for our family. He’s always extremely excited to see us.

Brady loves to drive in passenger seat of the car, eating snow, chewing sticks, running really fast with no leash and jumping on people’s beds.

This week’s Reston Pet of the Week is Ryder, who likes playing tug-of-war and snacking on cucumbers.

Here is what his owner, Ratha, says about him:

Ryder “Monkey” Bannon is the best four-legged companion we could have asked for. He’s our “baby”. We picked him out when he was a few weeks old and could barely open his eyes. He’s now 5 1/2 years old and has not changed one bit.

He loves soaking in the sun, chasing squirrels of his property, showing mail carriers who’s boss and playing catch and tug-of-war. His favorite snacks and treats include peanut butter which causes him to lick his lips every time we say those two words, ice-cream, pasta, and cucumbers. He takes after his papa.

Ryder is such a character. He’s captured the hearts of many children, puppies (especially the females), and even non-dog people. We can’t imagine our lives without him!

Reston Pet of the Week: Bo

This week’s Reston Pet of the Week is a Border Collie in need of a home. Homeward Trails Animal Rescue is hoping to find this special-needs dog a forever home. Here is a little more about him:

Bo is about as gorgeous as they come. This special guy was left at a high-kill shelter in West Virginia because his owners were moving.

Although you wouldn’t know it right away, Bo is deaf, but he doesn’t let that stop him. He LOVES fetch, but will be submissive around other dogs while playing. He is great on a leash and doesn’t even pull!

We are working on teaching him manners around his food bowl and basic commands. He’s a quick learner, potty trained and can be playful but timid when first introduced to other dogs. He’d probably do best with another calm but confident and social dog, as he is very curious about and takes cues from his canine pals. When Bo looks up at you with those soft brown eyes you can feel his gratitude for giving him love.

To find out more about Bo, visit his Petfinder page.  If you adopt him, let us know and you will win a sample of dog treats from our sponsor, Becky’s Pet Care, along with $100 in Becky’s Bucks.

This week’s Pet of the Week is a shelter Shih-Tzu named Beanie, who was proudly adopted two years ago. Here is what owner Emily has to say about how she found her pal, who was formerly named Sherman:

Not often do you find Shih-Tzu’s at the animal shelter, but one morning as I was searching the Loudoun County Animal Shelter website, a scraggly brown Shih-Tzu named Sherman was listed as available after being surrendered.

The poor thing had hair longer than my own and he had total fear and confusion in his eyes. I immediately dragged my parents to the shelter to see what this poor little dog was like and if he could be a playmate to our other Shih-Tzu, Bella. As we were heading back to look at him, another family with several kids came in asking to see Sherman as well. I smiled knowing we had beat them to it! We took Sherman to one of those private viewing rooms and he immediately rolled over to his back and let us pet him all over. He looked exactly like a wookie — and smelled like one too!

After adopting Sherman, we quickly renamed him Beanie because he was a jumping bean. We have had Beanie for two years now, and he has been the best dog we could ask for. Although we have been through many health scares with him, including eye ulcers, eyelid surgery and countless trips to the vet, I know that he is living the best life he can.

I have never had a dog that was so grateful for a new life and has ever loved being cuddled and held like a baby. He is so happy now and receives compliments wherever he goes. We have thankfully cleaned up his wookie hair-do but now looks like an ewok!

I can’t imagine why he was given up but so grateful he was. I can’t picture my life without Beanie and hope that I can spend many more years watching him run around the house chasing our cat.

This week’s Reston Pet of the Week is a pet in need of a home. Meet Snowball, a female Maine Coon Cat who is being fostered by Homeward Trails Pet Rescue.

Here is what her foster parents have to say:

Snowball is a long-haired, Maine Coon mix girl who is about 2-3 years old.  She is incredibly beautiful, sweet, reserved kitty.

She does not seek out attention but loves to be petted, brushed, held and cuddled — she doesn’t want you to put her down!

Snowball would do best in a quieter home with someone who wants to give her the love she deserves. She is absolutely stunning with her gorgeous long white fur! Her fur will require maintenance to avoid matting.

Upon arriving at a rural shelter, she had a punctured left eye which is most probably blind now but has healed.

Read more about Snowball on her Petfinder.com page.

If you adopt a pet through our Pet of the Week feature, let us know!

Our sponsor, Becky’s Pet Care, will give you a sample of dog or cat treats, along with $100 in Becky’s Bucks.
