This week’s Reston Pet of the Week is from another proud, local pet owner, which means he is not available for adoption.

Meet gentle giant Paco. Here is what owner Amy has to say about him:

As funny as it sounds, Paco adopted our family several years ago. After staying at our house while his original owner was gone, he fit seamlessly into our large household. Most importantly, his sister Kenya, a Rhodesian Ridgeback loved his company. When his owner was unable to take care of him, we were thrilled to welcome him permanently to the family.

Paco is more than we could have asked for.  His freckled pink nose, floppy ears, and lap-dog mentality are hard to beat. Whether barreling though the house with his slimy ball, or attempting to share a chair with someone — thinking he is much smaller than he actually is — he is a great supply of laughter and joy in our lives.  His pastimes include swimming in the lake, playing fetch and rolling in the mud. However on cold days, he enjoys cuddling near the fire with his humans.

Paco has been a great addition to our family and is the perfect example that pit pulls can in fact be loving and sweet family members too.

Reston Pet of the Week: Lucy

Reston Now returns this week to submission from a proud pet owner (so this week’s pet is not up for adoption). Meet Lucy, a chocolate-loving Chocolate Lab.

Here is what owner Mollie has to say about her:

My pet is a Chocolate Labrador named Lucy. She is 3 years old. She is very sweet and lovable. She likes to play outside, especially in the winter. She likes to catch snow balls and tennis balls. She likes to chew on bones and play tug of war.

Lucy has been trained. She likes lots of attention. She also likes to go on walks and play outside. She is decently obedient.

She is indestructible. She can eat whole chocolate bars and not get sick. She is also very strong. She is very healthy and has only had ticks twice. She is gentle, but she can defend herself as well as others.

Lucy is very caring. She is also empathetic. She likes to help people. She loves attention of any sort, especially petting. Lucy is caring, gentle, and willing to try almost anything!

Reston Now will now be featuring pets available for adoption as our Pets of the Week.  If the pets find a new home after our posting, the new owners will win prizes and treats from our sponsor, Becky’s Pet Care.

This week’s pet is Bandit, an older dog from Homeward Trails Animal Rescue who loves to ride in the car.

Little Bandit is an 8-year-old, adorable and active Lhasa Apso with the cutest little underbite!

His ideal family would be one that would love to spend time with him, taking him on lots of walks, car rides, and just hanging out with him and giving him lots of love.

Bandit thinks sitting in your lap and cuddling is the perfect way to spend the evening and he gets exercise by running circles around you. Literally!

Bandit simply loves to go for car rides so you can take him anywhere you go. He is a bit unsure around very young children, so an adult home or one with older children is ideal. If you will give him a wonderful home, Bandit will repay you by being your loving, loyal companion for life.

See more about Bandit on his Petfinder page.

Pet of the Week: Bernetta

Reston Now is trying something new for the new year. We will now have pets available for adoption as our Pets of the Week. If the pets find a new home after our posting, the new owners will win prizes and treats from our sponsor, Becky’s Pet Care.

This week’s Reston Pet of the week is tabby cat Bernetta. Here is what her foster parents have to say about her.

Bernetta is very cute, 1-2 year old Domestic Medium Haired orange tabby BEAUTY!

She has a huge, puffy tail that is feather-like and soooo soft! She is currently fostered with both cats and dogs — she tolerates the cats but doesn’t interact much. Sometimes she will try to play with them, but they just ignore her. She does interact with the dogs and will play with them often.

She’s very good at entertaining herself — she loves to play, is very curious and is not afraid of anything. She likes to hide and swipe at your legs and hands as you walk by to get your attention. She doesn’t use her claws, and it’s pretty cute. She usually comes when called and enjoys being petted. She does seek out attention occasionally, but she’s pretty independent. She likes to be in the same room with her people.

Bernetta doesn’t mind being picked up, but only for short periods and then she’s off to do her own thing again! Bernetta would be great for someone who wants companionship but doesn’t necessarily want a cat who will be all over them all the time, or someone who has other pets with whom she can be friends.

See more info on Bernetta on Homeward Trails Animal Rescue’s Petfinder page.

Reston Pet of the Week: Baci

This week’s Pet of the Week is Baci, a chocolate lab with a long list of nicknames.

Here is what owner Nic has to say about him:

Baci, a 6-year-old chocolate lab affectionately known as Pumpkin, Bubs, Noodle, VP Joe ‘Bitin’,  or Joey, is a subdued lover of naps and lounging who also knows how to have fun when the time is right.

He loves all things except vacuums, and his favorite food is apples.

He came into the Querolo household at the tender age of 12 weeks and was the runt of his litter. Against all odds, he has made his way to a healthy 90 pounds and is comfortable with the way he looks.

In his free time, Baci enjoys trips to his mom’s barn to see whats going on with her horses and cats. He is infamous for once finding the first aid kit in the back of the car and ingesting the package of TUMS, tampon and battery that were inside. There were no consequences.

His life goals include once taking a 24-hour nap, and one day being able to ride a horse. He also would like to meet more people. His claim to fame is his ability to find his collar wherever it is in the house so long as somebody gives him hints. He’s a real champion.

Meet Desmond and Sawyer, Reston residents since March 2014 and this week’s Reston Pets of the Week.

Here is what their owners have to say about them.

Desmond and Sawyer, based on our favorite characters from the TV show Lost, are twin brothers we welcomed into our home in March 2014.

We met Swayer first at a rescue event, and went on to their foster home to meet them together and spend some time with them. We fell in love, a week later, they had moved in with us and we are so happy they are part of our lives.

Desmond and Sawyer are 19-month-old gray tabbies. Both know to play fetch, and it’s the cutest thing when they bring the ball for us to throw. Our friends and family are always so surprised, cats who can fetch! Desmond loves playing fetch pretty much all day long; Sawyer only plays very late at night. Sometimes we wake up and there are multiple balls on our bed.

Desmond is the outgoing, affectionate one, he has yet to meet someone he doesn’t like. Sawyer is more selective, but a sweetheart. They both spend lots of time together, playing, sleeping, watching for squirrels, chipmunks and birds in the backyard. One of their favorite thing is sitting watching all the going-ons from the windows or our front door.

Meet Buster, a new resident of The Metropolitan at Reston Town Center and this week’s Reston Pet of the Week.

Here is what his owner Rich has to say about him.

This is Buster. He’ll be four months old on Dec. 13.

I adopted him from A Forever Home in Fairfax. They say someone tried to drown his litter in West Virginia.

Buster is a spaniel mix. Most say he looks like a beagle or a Jack Russell. He’s got the sweetest personality and  wants to play with every person and dog we meet.

We live at The Metropolitan at RTC. I wouldn’t suggest raising a puppy in a building with elevators and random sounds a lot, but Buster loves all the people and dogs he meets every day.

Meet Ian and Lucy, a pair of chihuahuas who are this week’s Reston Pets of the Week. Their owner Paul tells us how they came to be “siblings”:

Ian and Lucy are rescues who found their forever home in the North Point section of Reston.

Ian came into our lives nearly three years ago, and was joined by his “little sister” Lucy in September 2013. Although both are chihuahuas, they hav

They have very different temperaments. Ian is obedient, eager to please, and a bit shy. Lucy will march up to anyone, human or canine, and let her opinions be known, a habit we are trying to curtail without breaking her spirit.

Both are very loving and loyal and have an intense dislike of rain and snow — last winter was a bit too much for little Lucy. She is contemplating spending this winter in Florida with her “grandparents.”

Ian and Lucy enjoy walking through the neighborhoods and the trails, taking Long naps together, and watching TV with their humans. Lucy also enjoys tormenting Molly, our 17-year-old longhair cat.

Together they are truly family who have added immeasurable joy to our lives.

Reston Pet of the Week: Bash

This week’s Pet of the Week is Bash, a tabby who lives in Reston. Here is what his owner, Andrea, says about him:

Bash, our 1-year-old orange tabby, is a shy but energetic cat.

He got his name from being the most bashful of the litter when he was adopted. His foster mom wasn’t sure how well he would tolerate strangers at his first adoption event at 12 weeks old, but he warmed up to my husband pretty quickly.

Bash’s hobbies include looking out the window, napping on his favorite blue blanket, and distracting his mom from her homework. He also likes to get in his exercise by randomly sprinting up and down the stairs and by chasing any toy with feathers.

This week’s Reston Pets of the Week are three rescue dogs adopted by Christina and Josh. Here is what they say about their quirky troop of dogs:

We have thee pups, who we like to call our “misfits.” All three are rescues.

Jersey (the brown one — aka JZ, Jerz, big guy) is the sweetest teddy bear. He’s a 92-pound, blind, Australian shepherd mix. Sadly, he’s getting old and prefers to spend his days sleeping. His favorite treat is “bacon,” which is actually ice cubes.

Chewy (the black one — aka monkey, bug, sneezers) is our snuggliest pup. He’s a 45ish-pound lab mix who has been kicking cancer’ss butt. He’s the oldest, but is quite spunky, and entirely too goofy. Goes crazy over bananas!

Jorja (the white one — aka Jorjina, Pants) is the smartest of the bunch. She’s a 40ish-pound terrier mix, and she’s always on alert. She thinks the world revolves around her, but it’s easy to fall in love with her. She loves trying to chase squirrels up trees!

This week’s Reston Pet of the Week is Gordie (named for Gordie Howe but his hockey-loving owners. Here is what owner Leslie has to say about her mixed breed.

Gordie Howe (yes, just like the legendary Red Wings hockey player) will be four in December and lives in Reston Town Center. He’s a Schnauzer-mutt — we suspect part poodle — who was found and adopted as a pup through Lucky Dog Rescue, a wonderful rescue group out of DC.

Gordie’s favorite things include walks around the neighborhood to say hello to all his canine friends, getting loads of attention from pedestrians and the employees at the Apple store, and the Baron Cameron Dog Park, where he is so happy to run with the other dogs that he refuses to play catch with his humans.

A master of disguise, when Gordie gets haircuts he looks like a totally different dog. He hates wearing clothes, but tolerates his coat because he hates getting wet in the rain or snow even more.

This week’s Reston Pet of the Week is Pickle, a cat that owner Eilka found a few years ago. Here is what she has to say:

This is Pickle. That wasn’t the name we originally had for her, but she so excels at getting herself into a pickle, that the name could not be avoided. My husband found her in a storm drain several years ago.  She was about six months old and was wearing a flea collar, but no tags.

Obviously, someone put that collar on her, so we just assumed that she had run out someone’s front door.  After weeks of posting flyers and calling vets and shelters, it started to dawn on us that she was here to stay.

Pickle is a very unique cat.  She is, without a doubt, the least graceful animal I have ever seen. She will jump on the table and knock everything off without even trying. She can just sit next to something and it will fall over

Pickle also has a clear idea of the hierarchy of the household. My husband tops the list, with her in second place. I’m not sure who’s at the bottom — me or our other cats.  Probably me.  She acts like my husband’s pet and she treats me like her pet.  It’s a good thing she’s so cute!
