More than a dozen new recycling bins are being installed around Reston in the attempt to reduce trash in the community.

Reston Association says it has purchased 13 custom-made recycling bins, designed to fit the “Restonesque” style approved by the Design Review Board.

According to information provided by Reston Association:

RA staff will install the bins in high-use areas throughout the community, including sports fields and recreational facilities. RA is working on additional strategies to reduce trash and increase recycling.

Mike Leone, RA’s communications director, said local businesses sponsor the cost of the bins.

“We are always seeking individual and business donors to fund the purchase of new recycle bins,” Leone said. “The Friends of Reston, the 501(c)(3) nonprofit volunteer organization of Reston Association, works with our staff doing the fundraising for the purchase of more bins.”

The “Adopt a Bin” program is an attempt to drum up support for the recycling effort in the community. Donations can be made in any amount. For a $1,000 donation, an individual or company can have their name or company logo placed on a plaque on the bin.

RA crews service the bins and deliver their contents to the Fairfax County collection site.

Once upon a time, “Restonesque” would have been subdued, earth tone, perhaps with a small blue stripe to connote recycle. But then again, with that nuclear explosion of development going on in the heart of Reston, maybe gaudy and construction-helmet like is more appropriate.

Please place some of these bins along the walking paths too. That’s where I see the most trash around Reston.

Forgive me but I’ve always been mostly appalled by Reston’s architecture and other design requirements. Most will agree the 70s style of architecture is unappealing. When I drive around Reston my thoughts are generally, “That’s ugly, that’s really ugly, OMG bull doze that, oh now that’s lovely, sitting next to that monstrosity, ugly, ugly, so 70s, ugh, horror show, what are they THINKING, I could live there, oh now here’s an enclave of lovely homes …” Don’t get me started on the shopping centers one step above a strip mall.

Were you around when the Brutalist bunker was still an item? The never-change-a-thingers were really wound up about that hideous eyesore (now gone, thankfully).

I doubt you even understand what you are saying.

You have got to be kidding me? Now trash has to be approved by the DRB.

And that day-glo blue is certainly not Restonesque in the least. Such colors are not found in other than nuclear reactors.

And let’s not kid ourselves — the bins, ugly as they are, cost X, but installing, dumping them, cleaning them and inspecting them will cost X times MANY.

RA never runs out of ideas to spend our money
The DRB is not fit for purpose
If you want a laugh go to a DRB meeting – the pomposity and ignorance are appalling
    I feel.sorry for their victims
