Fairfax County Approves Kensington Senior Development Facility

After weeks of deferrals, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors approved a plan to bring a 91-unit assisted living facility to 11501 Sunrise Valley Drive yesterday.

The plan by Kensington Senior Development drew vehement opposition from neighboring residents who argued the building was being shoehorned onto a small site. The facility will bring an end to Good Beginnings School, a childcare program currently on the site.

Cathy Hudgins, the supervisor for the Hunter Mill District, said county officials worked with residents and the developer to reach an amicable solution in response to residents’ concerns. She said stakeholder meetings brought about “agreeable solutions” in response to concerns about the height of the building and screening between the facility and the surrounding residential community.

“I appreciate the cooperation of the community as well as the applicant,” Hudgins said.

    What were the agreeable solutions?

Hey Reston Now, how about a follow up telling us exactly what was agreed to? I am unwilling to accept Supervisor Hudgins word on this matter. I want to know what kind of negotiator she is. How about something from the residents affected? Please flesh out this story!

      • Why do you bother?

Agreed – some actual reporting would have been nice, instead of just reprinting a news release.

Using the term “agreeable solutions” is a bit premature; it would be better stated that the two sides are now working cooperatively toward a solution that will be mutually agreeable. At this point there is little more to report. Speaking as a resident within slingshot range of the proposed building (and an attendee of this latest session) I am of the view that Kensington understands our concerns; has agreed to work closely with us to address those concerns; and has shown good faith throughout. The details are quite a way off and will be subject to further review and approval by the county and the DRB, so don’t look for specifics just yet. Stay tuned.

If Hudgins says its good, then it can’t be good for Reston

    “Agreeable Solutions” = BOHICA.
