Tall drink at bartaco/courtesy bartacoIt’s Cinco de Mayo!

May 5 is commonly observed to commemorate the Mexican army’s unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862.

And, it’s also a good excuse for nachos, margaritas and other Latin-inspired food and drink.

Here are some ideas for fun in Reston:

On The Border Mexican Grill & Cantina — is offering $4 margaritas and $3 bottles of Dos Equis Amber, Dos Equis Lager, Corona and Corona, among other specials.

bartaco  — Try the fresh-squeezed juices in your margarita and a variety of snack-sized tacos.

Uncle Julio’s, Reston Town Center — This town center standby is always a good place for house-made tortillas and frozen margaritas.

Lake Anne Market — This mini-mart at Lake Anne Plaza has a kitchen that turns out quality pupusas, tacos, and other authentic Latin American specialities.

Meanwhile, the Washington Regional Alcohol Program’s SoberRide will be offering free rides on Cinco de Mayo. You can receive a free carb ride home from 4 p.m. Thursday until 4 a.m. Friday (up to a $30 fare). To receive a free cab ride home please call 800-200-8294 (TAXI).

Traffic on Reston Parkway/Credit: Reston 2020This is an op-ed by Reston resident Terry Maynard. It does not reflect the opinion of Reston Now. Something on your mind? Send a letter to [email protected].

Restonians are once again faced with the prospect of the burden of an added local “tax service district  that could add hundreds of dollars to their annual property tax bill every year. The one we already have, Small Tax District 5, supports our Reston Community Center in providing cultural and educational activities for the community. The proposed new one would solely subsidize developer profits while increasing county tax revenues.

As this discussion continues, Reston Association has shared a questionnaire online with its weekly RA NewsLine (click on “Transportation Tax Survey) for residents to provide feedback on the Reston special transportation tax district idea. I urge all Restonians to vote “NO.” The following provides an explanation why.

The basis for the proposal lies in planned development in Reston’s station areas, growth that will exclusively benefit Reston’s station area landowners. Assuming that all Reston developers are as successful as Boston Properties per its 2015 annual report, their likely profit will total more than $53 billion over 40 years after building costs. That includes more than $9 billion from their future development as well as more than one billion dollars per year from their existing Reston holdings. That is an average of $1.3 billion per year!

Virginia Sen. Mark Warner (right) and Supreme Court nominee Merrick Garland met on Wednesday, April 13/Courtesy Warner's office

Senate Republicans say that they will not hold hearings or otherwise consider President Obama’s nominee to the U.S. Supreme Court, Merrick Garland.

But Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.) said Wednesday, after a meeting with Garland, that he’s hopeful Republicans will change their mind. He is pressing for Garland to get “the hearing he deserves,” followed by an up or down vote on his confirmation.

“I have to remain an optimist in this business,” he said. “I hope that public pressure maintains that some of my colleagues will rethink their position and go ahead and hold the hearing.”

Warner didn’t specify what he thinks may finally sway Republicans from their position, that in a presidential year it should fall to the next president to make the nomination to the nation’s highest court. The resolve of those lawmakers is made even stronger given that Garland, who’s widely considered a moderate, would be replacing the late Antonin Scalia, a staunch conservative.

Could the outcome of the presidential nomination process — say, if the general election race turned out to be between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump — be the turning point?

“To me that would be kind of whacky,” Warner said. “Although this has been clearly a kind of whacky election year.”

Warner said he hopes the nomination process can be de-politicized.

“I think it is terribly important that the process proceeds,” he said. “The Constitution is explicitly clear that the president shall nominate. He did his job on March 16 when he nominated Judge Garland, now it’s up to the Senate to advise and consent. I strongly hope that my Republican colleagues will take this out of the realm of politics and do their job.”

“The notion that we’re going to use political gamesmanship about decision-making on the Supreme Court would be a further deterioration of our political process in this country,” Warner added. “That’s not what the country wants.”

National Weather ServiceSpring’s fragile cherry blossoms may be blown to the ground by late tonight.

The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory for Fairfax County and most of Northern Virginia through midnight Monday.

The NWS says the strongest winds will continue through early evening, then gradually diminish.

Winds are expected to be 20 to 30 miles per hour — with gusts up to 50 mph, the NWS says.

There could be scattered tree and power line damage and difficulty driving high-profile vehicles, the NWS said.
