Reston Pet of the Week: Bo

This week’s Reston Pet of the Week is a Border Collie in need of a home. Homeward Trails Animal Rescue is hoping to find this special-needs dog a forever home. Here is a little more about him:

Bo is about as gorgeous as they come. This special guy was left at a high-kill shelter in West Virginia because his owners were moving.

Although you wouldn’t know it right away, Bo is deaf, but he doesn’t let that stop him. He LOVES fetch, but will be submissive around other dogs while playing. He is great on a leash and doesn’t even pull!

We are working on teaching him manners around his food bowl and basic commands. He’s a quick learner, potty trained and can be playful but timid when first introduced to other dogs. He’d probably do best with another calm but confident and social dog, as he is very curious about and takes cues from his canine pals. When Bo looks up at you with those soft brown eyes you can feel his gratitude for giving him love.

To find out more about Bo, visit his Petfinder page.  If you adopt him, let us know and you will win a sample of dog treats from our sponsor, Becky’s Pet Care, along with $100 in Becky’s Bucks.

Becky’s Pet Care, the winner of three Angie’s List Super Service Awards and the National Association of Professional Pet Sitters’ 2013 Business of the Year, provides professional dog walking and pet sitting services in Reston and Northern Virginia.

This week’s Pet of the Week is a shelter Shih-Tzu named Beanie, who was proudly adopted two years ago. Here is what owner Emily has to say about how she found her pal, who was formerly named Sherman:

Not often do you find Shih-Tzu’s at the animal shelter, but one morning as I was searching the Loudoun County Animal Shelter website, a scraggly brown Shih-Tzu named Sherman was listed as available after being surrendered.

The poor thing had hair longer than my own and he had total fear and confusion in his eyes. I immediately dragged my parents to the shelter to see what this poor little dog was like and if he could be a playmate to our other Shih-Tzu, Bella. As we were heading back to look at him, another family with several kids came in asking to see Sherman as well. I smiled knowing we had beat them to it! We took Sherman to one of those private viewing rooms and he immediately rolled over to his back and let us pet him all over. He looked exactly like a wookie — and smelled like one too!

After adopting Sherman, we quickly renamed him Beanie because he was a jumping bean. We have had Beanie for two years now, and he has been the best dog we could ask for. Although we have been through many health scares with him, including eye ulcers, eyelid surgery and countless trips to the vet, I know that he is living the best life he can.

I have never had a dog that was so grateful for a new life and has ever loved being cuddled and held like a baby. He is so happy now and receives compliments wherever he goes. We have thankfully cleaned up his wookie hair-do but now looks like an ewok!

I can’t imagine why he was given up but so grateful he was. I can’t picture my life without Beanie and hope that I can spend many more years watching him run around the house chasing our cat.

This week’s Reston Pet of the Week is a pet in need of a home. Meet Snowball, a female Maine Coon Cat who is being fostered by Homeward Trails Pet Rescue.

Here is what her foster parents have to say:

Snowball is a long-haired, Maine Coon mix girl who is about 2-3 years old.  She is incredibly beautiful, sweet, reserved kitty.

She does not seek out attention but loves to be petted, brushed, held and cuddled — she doesn’t want you to put her down!

Snowball would do best in a quieter home with someone who wants to give her the love she deserves. She is absolutely stunning with her gorgeous long white fur! Her fur will require maintenance to avoid matting.

Upon arriving at a rural shelter, she had a punctured left eye which is most probably blind now but has healed.

Read more about Snowball on her Petfinder.com page.

If you adopt a pet through our Pet of the Week feature, let us know!

Our sponsor, Becky’s Pet Care, will give you a sample of dog or cat treats, along with $100 in Becky’s Bucks.

Hunters Woods Village CenterThis is an op-ed from Terry Maynard of Co-Chair of Reston 2020, a citizen advocacy group.

(Updated at 6:05 p.m.) Having recovered from the December holidays, I finally read the second draft of the Phase 2 Reston Master Plan last week in preparation for the community meeting this Thursday, 7 p.m., at RCC Lake Anne’s JoAnne Rose Gallery Room.  It’s an open meeting with substantial opportunity for public participation.  I encourage you to be there because …

What I found in the draft plan regarding Reston’s Village Centers was language that allows virtually unconstrained redevelopment of these critical neighborhood “gathering places.”

First, and maybe most importantly, there are no meaningful constraints on density — the actual amount of building that could be done at the Village Centers. Typically, including the Phase 1 plan for Reston’s urban areas, planning guidance indicates a maximum density measured by floor-area ratio (FAR) that, as the phrase suggests, measures the ratio of the volume of square footage of allowable for development to the area of the property. This week’s Reston Pet of the Week is from another proud, local pet owner, which means he is not available for adoption.

Meet gentle giant Paco. Here is what owner Amy has to say about him:

As funny as it sounds, Paco adopted our family several years ago. After staying at our house while his original owner was gone, he fit seamlessly into our large household. Most importantly, his sister Kenya, a Rhodesian Ridgeback loved his company. When his owner was unable to take care of him, we were thrilled to welcome him permanently to the family.

Paco is more than we could have asked for.  His freckled pink nose, floppy ears, and lap-dog mentality are hard to beat. Whether barreling though the house with his slimy ball, or attempting to share a chair with someone — thinking he is much smaller than he actually is — he is a great supply of laughter and joy in our lives.  His pastimes include swimming in the lake, playing fetch and rolling in the mud. However on cold days, he enjoys cuddling near the fire with his humans.

Paco has been a great addition to our family and is the perfect example that pit pulls can in fact be loving and sweet family members too.

Reston Pet of the Week: Lucy

Reston Now returns this week to submission from a proud pet owner (so this week’s pet is not up for adoption). Meet Lucy, a chocolate-loving Chocolate Lab.

Here is what owner Mollie has to say about her:

My pet is a Chocolate Labrador named Lucy. She is 3 years old. She is very sweet and lovable. She likes to play outside, especially in the winter. She likes to catch snow balls and tennis balls. She likes to chew on bones and play tug of war.

Lucy has been trained. She likes lots of attention. She also likes to go on walks and play outside. She is decently obedient.

She is indestructible. She can eat whole chocolate bars and not get sick. She is also very strong. She is very healthy and has only had ticks twice. She is gentle, but she can defend herself as well as others.

Lucy is very caring. She is also empathetic. She likes to help people. She loves attention of any sort, especially petting. Lucy is caring, gentle, and willing to try almost anything!
