This is a promoted post from Potomac River Running, which has nine DC-area locations, including one at Reston Town Center.
An assault occurs at least once every two minutes. Recently we’ve heard of attacks on area trails as close to home as Sterling, Fairfax and Arlington. Whether you’re a runner or avid athlete, enjoy a walk in the park, or park to workout at the gym or pick up groceries at the store, you are at risk.
Being prepared could save your life, so =PR= has partnered with Asics to bring the RunSafer presentation to the DC area in September. You’ll learn valuable safety tips and ways to escape dangerous situations from Two-Time United States Olympic Distance Runner and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Black Belt Todd Williams.
We invite you to bring your family, friends, and colleagues to attend any of the more than 10 FREE workshop sessions we’ve scheduled around the DC area between Sept. 11 and 14. Come dressed for activity and ready to learn self-defense techniques and safety awareness tips.
RSVP to the free workshop that works best with your schedule. Additional workshops may be added and will be posted on www.potomacriverrunning.com. We look forward to running safer with you!

This week’s Reston Pet of the Week is Ella. She is a 2-year-old Maltese and Yorkie mix. Here is what owner Rachel has to say about her:
Ella was born on March 27, 2012 in the farm country of Ohio. Ella met her parents when she was only two weeks old and has been the apple of their eyes ever since! She may look like a pure Maltese, but just listen for her Yorkie bark.
Her favorite color is pink, which is represented in various collars, leashes and of course clothing. She loves to play in the basement, otherwise known as “Ella’s Playground,” chase squirrels and collect sticks on walks. Ella is known for her stick obsession. But don’t let her size fool you, she can pick up a stick at least three times her size! And when it comes to the squirrels, those little legs move pretty fast, just ask the squirrels. We’ve had a couple close calls.
But her favorite activity of all is cuddling up to her mom and dad. She is the sweetest dog we know. One look at that face and she knows she has you wrapped around her little paw.

This week’s Reston Pet of the Week is a feline friend. Meet Betty Lou, who comes to Reston from far away. Here is what her owner, Jennifer, has to say:
Betty Lou was rescued from the streets of New Delhi, India by my friend and colleague Leslie, who fostered her for the first two months of her life. Betty Lou was a tiny kitten and my two older cats helped show her the ways of a house cat.
When I returned to Northern Virginia, Betty Lou was thrilled to watch wildlife and look over the Reston woods from my windows. In fact, in 2013 Betty Lou used her finely tuned hunting skills to protect my home from unwelcome wildlife that had mistakenly entered the premises.
Betty Lou’s favorite beverage is tea. She will drink tea out of a cup if given an opportunity! She is also a serious catnip junkie. Her favorite past times include playing with toys and my other cats, napping on the cat tree, and patrolling my home for interlopers.

Meet, Champ, this week’s Reston Pet of the Week. He’s a rescue dog who is very active. Here is what owner Claire has to say:
My husband, Steve, and I adopted our furry friend, Champ, from Lab Rescue this past January. We fell in love with his cute ears and his goofy, long tongue Champ is a 2 year old lab mix with lots of energy and tons of love. Champ loves to go on runs, play in the water and play ball on the field. He loves all the kids in our neighborhood and loves to watch them play out our front window.
We adopted Champ knowing that he was heartworm positive. In March, we went through the month long treatment to fight the heart worm. We just found out last week that he is no longer has heartworm!! He is such a tough, little guy and he truly is a champ. We are so proud of our buddy. We are totally in love with Champ and he is the perfect addition to our little family.

This week’s Reston Pet of the Week is Wilson, a 2-year-old Golden Retriever. Here is what his owner, Jennifer, has to say about him:
Meet Wilson! He greets anyone and everyone (human or animal) with a giant smile and sometimes a big, sloppy kiss. His talents include knowing the words: ‘Breakfast,” “Lunch,” and “Dinner,” and being an expert of the ‘leave it’ command. He also has a world-famous tail because it is so large and fluffy and is known to make people’s days by sitting in the passenger seat of our car and smiling at onlookers in traffic.
When he isn’t taking naps, Wilson enjoys playing tag and considers himself a stick connoisseur. If he had it is way, he would spend all his free time gnawing on sticks and running in the parks of Reston. … and rooting on his favorite sports team, the Washington Nationals.
Wilson’s favorite foods include: ice cubes, lettuce(!), and peanut butter, for which he will do endless tricks. Whenever he hears the sound of lettuce being cut for salads, or ice cube trays being emptied, he is never far away and will appear out of nowhere in hopes of getting a special treat. His favorite current activity is trying to befriend the household cat, Sophie, which is a work in progress….#hiss.

This week’s Reston Pet of the Week is Ava, a rescue from the Fairfax County Animal Shelter. Here is what her owner, Katie, has to say about her:
Miss Ava is a 1-year-old Husky Australian Cattle Dog mix that came into my life this past February.
I adopted her from the Fairfax County Animal Shelter, where I fell in love with her beautiful blue eyes.
She has properly filled a hole in my heart with the loss of my Siberian Husky, Sadie.Ava is a sweet soul and lots of energy. Our time together is spent hiking, long walks, and “bikejoing”(mountain biking with a dog) on the W & OD trial. She is getting acclimated to her new life in Reston and adjusting well. I, on the other hand, have had to adjust to a youngster back in the home! Discipline, consistency, and love have worked to have our lives blend together.
I’m grateful to have Ava in my life. She is a handful but, worth it.
