Police are investigating the death of a man who was reportedly suffering from “upper body trauma” near downtown Herndon, according to the Herndon Police Department.
Around 1 a.m. today (April 5), police responded to the 600 block of Clearwater Court for a report of an unresponsive man with trauma to his upper body, according to the report. The 45-year-old man was pronounced dead around 2 a.m. at the Reston Hospital Center, police say.
Police say there is no known threat to public safety and are asking for anyone with information regarding the incident at contact Detective Miranda at 703-435-6843.

The Reston Hospital Center (RHC) is halfway through its $72 million expansion, but while the expansion is large, it’s hardly the first for the hospital.
Fairfax County’s Historic Imagery Viewer has shots of the hospital since its creation and helps put together a view of how the hospital has changed over the years.
The RHC, located near the Reston Town Center, first opened its doors on Nov. 10, 1986. Some parking lots and building extensions were added over time.
The first major expansion began in 2001 when the west wing of the facility, a five-story facility with 60 additional beds and other treatment facilities. The Parkway Medical Tower, which ouses the ambulatory/outpatient surgery center and a parking garage, was also added.
Between 2012 and 2015, the RHC also invested $40 million expansions and new services, which included substantial interior renovations. In 2012 work began on the $25 million Pavilion II Medical Office Building which provided more administrative space.
The new upgrades include a 403-space parking garage scheduled to be completed this summer, as well as:
- New 18-bed Inpatient Rehabilitation Center
- Expanded 24-bed Intensive Care Unit
- Addition of a second lab to the cardiac services unit
- Renovations to visitor areas including a new cafeteria, a glass concourse, and main entrance and lobby
- New parking garage for patients and visitors on the West Wing entrance
- Addition of eight rooms to accommodate high-risk obstetric patients

Most of the Fairfax County crew and Reston Hospital Center hospital staff who treated a motorcyclist critically injured from a 2017 collision had a reunion on Wednesday at the hospital.
Crews responded to a call for a collision involving a motorcycle and a car on April 27, 2017. When they arrived on the scene, they found that Michael Hyman, the motorcyclist, was critically injured, according to a Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department post.

Our firefighters and paramedics knew time was of the essence. They exhibited excellent teamwork assessing and treating the patient. Medic 416’s time on scene was six minutes before they were off to the trauma center at Reston Hospital.
The crews thought they had done they best they could to give the young motorcyclist a chance to survive. That said, many thought the young man may not make it. As with many critical medical or trauma calls, our personnel deliver the patient to the hospital not ultimately knowing the outcome for that patient.
Hyman, the Fairfax County crew and the hospital staff went over the details of what happened to Hyman on-scene and at the trauma center, along with the treatment, recovery and physical therapy processes Hyman went through.
“He had extensive injuries that none of us had really seen before,” Liz Klemens, a nurse at the hospital, recalled in a Reston Hospital Center YouTube video.
Some of his injuries included a fractured a segment of his spine in his neck, a broken right arm, a snapped femur in his left leg, broken bones in his ankles and three to four places broken in his hip and pelvis.
Hyman now has a metal rod from his shoulder to elbow in his right arm, which he can’t move due to stretched nerves. He also cannot feel anything in his right hand.
The Dec. 5 evening ended with Hyman and his mother, Kim Hyman, thanking the firefighters, paramedics and hospital staff involved in his care.
“Reston saved my son’s life,” Kim Hyman said in the video.

Reston Hospital Center is just under the halfway point of its $72 million expansion — on track and on budget for completion by the end of next year.
The completed pieces of the project include renovations of the Women and Children’s Services unit and expansion of the neonatal intensive care unit, along with new paint, flooring and upgraded equipment, Erin Echelmeyer, a hospital spokeswoman, told Reston Now. The West Wing Lobby is also finished, with a revamped lobby area, gift shop, physicians’ lounge and office space, she said.
“It is progressing right along,” Echelmeyer said. “We are on target to complete this second phase of our master facility plan by the end of 2019.”
A breakdown of the pieces of the project still in progress is below:

Construction on a new 403-space parking garage has already begun, which is expected to be done by the end of next summer. The Inpatient Rehabilitation Center is slated to open next month, followed by the Intensive Care Unit in January, Echelmeyer said.
The hospital reopened the emergency room entrance, after having patients enter through the hospital’s main entrance, she said, adding that the emergency room, level II trauma center and pediatric emergency room “are all fully function[al] and accessible from the emergency room entrance.”
This is not the first time the 187-bed hospital, which is part of Tennessee-based health giant HCA Holdings, Inc, has expanded. The hospital embarked on a $40 million expansion between 2012 and 2015, which included a 180,00-square-foot medical office and the addition of four operating rooms and 19 surgical recovery rooms in the surgical department.
The current expansion was announced in 2016, when the hospital hit its 30th anniversary. The phased project will add more than 63,000 square feet of new space to the facility.
