Afternoon Poll: Has the Silver Line Changed Your Life?

Happy first birthday to Metro’s Silver Line, which transported its first passengers on July 26, 2014.

Since then, Wiehle-Reston East has become the most popular station on the young line, spurring development — as well as a few traffic headaches — nearby. Metro, meanwhile, is about to start airing TV commercial (see above) starring “Alan,” whose life was changed by rail service here.

Take our poll and tell us whether rail in Reston has impacted you a little, a lot or not at all.

  • Ming the Merciless

It has made turning right from the Toll Road onto Wiehle – and crossing over the Toll Road from the direction of Sunset Hills – much, much more annoying.

  • Ihor Jarema

My wife has commuted into DC for years via bus from Reston to West Falls Church Metro. Her new Silver Line commute is 1/2 hour longer each way and more expensive even though the Bus now comes down our street. The advantage goes to developers in Tysons (now a bigger choke point) and developers in Reston.

  • Agnes Nutter

Definitely a combination of answers. It has made my commute more convenient, but also longer and more expensive. Also, it has really screwed up traffic in the area, not to mention the kiss and ride.

  • Mookie Taylor

I chose to live where I do partly because of the planned Metro stop. I love to ride my bike along the W&OD trail to DC, then take the Metro back.

I’ve only ridden a few times, on weekends. Have I just been unlucky or does it literally move at about 20 mph between Reston and Tysons? I suspect something to do with making sure the timing is right for injecting the trains into the Orange Line without causing trouble.

Either way, I’ve found it pretty useless for getting anywhere on time, at least on the weekends. You have to allow so much time that you’re better off driving.

  • Greg

Here’s that half-billion dollar computerized traffic light system for you.

  • Rational Reston

Meh. The Whiele-Sunset Hills intersection has always been a mess, actually the Metro caused improvements have helped the flow there.

The traffic issues come from the Toll Road and the traffic from the Southern side of the Toll Road going North, but that’s not different than any other Toll Road interchange like Reston Parkway.

But the parking garage(s) are a confusing mess without good flow in or out.

  • krank

It made my daily commute longer and more expensive, so yeah, there’s that. I would go back to taking a bus to WFC in a heartbeat if the opportunity presented itself. It would actually be cheaper, financially, for me to drive downtown, but my nerves would be shot from the traffic.

  • Chuck Morningwood

I was so inspired by the new stop that I changed jobs and now work locally. My commute has gone from 2.5 hours everyday to less than 0.5, except when I have to pass through the SR Valley/Ffx Cty Pkwy mess.

All told, it’s like getting 10 extra weeks of vacation a year. More of you should try it.
