Founders Week Continues With Weekend Fun

FOUNDERS WEEK1

Founders Week 2016 is working towards its big finish this weekend. Here’s what is on tap as Reston continues celebrating the life of its late founder Robert E. Simon Jr.:

Friday, April 8

The Rhythmic Circus at Reston Community Center Hunters Woods, 8 p.m.

Saturday, April 9

Founders Day Celebration, Lake Anne Plaza, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Join the Reston Historic Trust and Museum to celebrate Robert E. Simon and the community. Founder’s Day will feature a 50-foot Ferris wheel sponsored by Reston Association (RA); children’s activities; children’s art projects in cooperation with the Initiative for Public Art – Reston (IPAR); musical entertainment for all ages provided by local artists and schools; guided walks around Lake Anne Plaza in cooperation with IPAR and RA; and remarks by local elected officials. 

Zachary Oxman, sculptor of “Bronze Bob,” will be on the plaza in front of the Reston Museum Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to demonstrate how he made the iconic statue. He will have videos, pictures, and welding equipment that you can try on. Bring your favorite photo of Bronze Bob.

Movie ScreeningFun, Beauty and Fantasy: Reston’s Public Art, RCC Lake Anne. Showings every 15 minutes from 10 to 11 a.m. and 2 to 3 p.m. This 15-minute film by Reston’s Rebekah Wingert-Jabi includes historic footage and information about the sculptures and fountains at Lake Anne and Reston Town Center, as well as the mosaic work at the Glade Drive underpass.

Sunday, April 10

A Gift to Bob’s Community, Hyatt Regency Reston, 2 to 4 p.m.

Celebrate the life of Robert E. Simon, Jr. with the Audubon Quartet, a short film about his life created by Storycatcher Productions, and stories of his times and experiences. Light refreshments will be served. Reservations required. Call CenterStage Box Office at 703-476-4500, and Press 3. There is a limit of 4 reservations per household.

Mercury Fountain Celebration, Reston Town Center, 4:30 p.m.

Following the Bob Simon Celebration at the Hyatt, join the community to turn on the Mercury Fountain for the 2016 season. Music, refreshments, family fun, and a brief dedication.

Another Way of Living: The Story of Reston, VA, Reston Town Center Pavilion, 7:30 p.m.

Enjoy a free screening of the documentary film about Reston. Bring blankets or chairs for seating.
