‘Easier-To-Use’ Payment Kiosks Unveiled at Reston Town Center

by Dave Emke July 26, 2017 at 4:00 pm 28 Comments

Saying they have heard the concerns of visitors who do not want to use the ParkRTC app, Boston Properties has updated the payment kiosks in the Reston Town Center parking garages.

According to information released on Reston Town Center’s Facebook page and elsewhere, new kiosks in the parking garages do not require the use of the ParkRTC app. Rather, it says, payment can be made by swiping a credit card or by paying with cash and receiving change. The information also says parking validation provided by a business is “easy to apply” using the kiosks.

More than 200,000 downloads of the ParkRTC app have been made, according to the announcement.

Anti-ParkRTC group Keep Parking Free at RTC called the new kiosks a win for their cause.

Share this! And then this happened… #ScraptheApp! Looks like Boston Properties has abandoned the requirement to use…

Paid parking went into effect Jan. 3 at Reston Town Center, requiring $2-per-hour payment in garages all day Monday through Friday. On June 5, parking became free in garages between 5 p.m. and 3:30 a.m., and one hour of free parking is also offered during the day.

What don’t they get about I am not coming back until there is 2-3 hours free during the day? Greed should not be rewarded.

    • 40yearsinreston

      2-3 hours ?
      No fees ever

    • Bah

You have 2 or 3 hours of free time during the day? Obviously you don’t need a job. You must have plenty of money, so you should use it for parking. BP should not reward your greed for free parking!

      • Generic User

I’ve already had this conversation with you a couple of months ago on here, BP shill. Go look it up to see how it ended.

        • Bah

It ended with you getting pwned.

          • Generic User

I’ll put this in language you can understand, lolcats. I doubt that is the case, but I am happy to put it to a vote here in the forum.

Say does your boss Peter Johnston know that you are wasting time at work and further damaging Boston Properties’ brand by trolling forums and making remarks that just make people hate BXP more?

  • Mike M

These clowns will continue to “invest” their way to complete defeat. In other words, they are throwing money out the window because the management will not read the handwriting on the wall. He or she could never work for me!

    • 40yearsinreston

Lack of leadership is endemic throughout BP

      • Cruel gameshow host

Which makes retirement even more difficult as BXP is 100% institutionally owned and your retirement is fully vested.

        • The Constitutionalist

They’re doing just fine as a corporation.

        • 40yearsinreston

          My assets are fully diversified
          I dont need BPX

  • 40yearsinreston

    They are on the run
The stench of defeat permeates their ‘executive suite’

Fired spin doctors, no app required
The Arrogant CEO will regret his big mouth
An apology and restitution is in order

      ^^^^ THIS ^^^^
The justification for paid parking was a poorly constructed lie to hide a cash grab.
They continued to lie about the impact of paid parking even as merchant complaints and empty streets of RTC proved otherwise.
PR crisis mode and more lies about their commitment to paid parking and the app.

At the beginning, I said I wasn’t upset about paid parking (the market would sort it out). I was upset about the lies, the arrogant commitment to the lies, and the requirement for the app.
      NO MORE!!!!
I will accept nothing but BP’s complete surrender due to their arrogance. They are on the run and trying to catch a falling knife.
Have you been to Lake Anne recently? The place is packed and revitalized. Vienna is a short drive down lawyers and Taco Bamba is fantastic! RTC West will be opening soon as will Reston Heights and Founding Farmers at Reston Station.
RTC is old news and I won’t return until they full surrender on suburban parking.
If they want to prevent commuter parking when metro opens in 2020, allow 3-4hrs free parking during the day and charge a rate that discourages commuters after that. Until then, Free Parking or Bust.

The easiest way to use the new kiosks is to go someplace that doesn’t have them.

    • Why do you bother?

      You win the Internet today!

  • Chuck Morningwood

No thank you, BP. Not coming back until the paid parking is gone.

I has a nice lunch at Tipicos Gloria in Sterling today. A nice burrito with bribed, roasted chicken. Decent food, lower prices, free parking. What’s not to like?

    • Heh

What’s not to like? The gas and time it took to get out there, which was certainly more than $2. But whatever.

      • Tom

So you know where Chuck lives then?

      • Chuck Morningwood

Actually, it’s right near my office, closer than RTC is. At least this week anyway.

  • RestonAssurance

Glad that wretched app is gone, BPX. Good move, but still not patronizing until the paid parking gone bad is no more.

  • Tom

So basically they’re admitting that they could have done this all along but they wanted to see if shoppers would go along with their scam (as if we wouldn’t notice). Nice try, BP. I’m still boycotting until paid parking is gone.

    • Big Drop

Today it is not just shoppers. Tenants of apartments and condos along with employees of numerous companies can live and work elsewhere (and the choices are endless) without paying a penny to park.

  • New to Reston

I was just there for the first time since parking was implemented yesterday. I was trying to get my phone repaired at the Apple Store, so was unable to either call or log-in to the ParkRTC app. I know this is not a popular opinion, but I was fine paying for my parking – but was literally unable to. I searched everywhere for these new kiosks/pay stations and was not able to find them. I also asked several other individuals in the garage and no one knew. Does anyone know where these are being installed and when?

    • Big Drop

I do not believe you can use the kiosks for street parking which still charge @3.00 an hour on Saturdays. Because there are no meters I believe you still need to use the app. In fact THE HANDICAP SPACES CHARGE $3.00 an hour also. At some point there will be a car with handicapped plates parked in a handicap space and a yellow barnacle on the windshield. That photograph will speak volumes about BPX and their values.

      • New to Reston

I was trying to park in a garage, as I thought that you still had to pay for street parking. I was completely unable to find a pay station kiosk. I don’t understand why they have adopted such a complicated system.

  • JW

Still not paying. Not now. Not ever.

  • Ann

What do they not get about no paid parking? The concept isn’t that difficult. I’m not paying. Not at a new kiosk or an old kiosk.

  • Big Drop

I believe that both the State department and the Intelligence agencies-who are foundational to Reston-are concerned about future tenure. Along with sequestration the new indecision from the Trump administration has left a lot of insecurity in the Reston market, both with housing and employment. The whole issue of paid parking is now academic. The larger issue is what will employment be like here a year or two from now? Boston Properties seem to misunderstand who is the bedrock of their Town Center and what these agencies/companies are going through right now. They’ll find out quite soon when they start trying to rent the 500+ unit Signature apartments which are under construction in TC. And when they renogotiate some of the leases from their larger tenants.

There is a lot of competition in the marketplace…which is shrinking for many.
