Chamber Spotlight is a feature sponsored by the Greater Reston Chamber of Commerce. Today’s Q-and-A is with chamber members James Lawson and Angela Inzerillo, who own Impact Business Solutions LLC.
Reston Now: Why did you decide to start your business in Reston?
IMU: The fast-growing number of small businesses in our backyard of Reston and the Dulles Corridor provides an excellent opportunity for our business consulting practice to meet and develop relationships with our ideal clients.
RN: What are the challenges and rewards of being a business owner?
IMU: The biggest challenges most business owners have are getting clients and systemizing and scaling their business. As we see every day, people who start and own a business are very passionate about what they do and have the technical skills to provide their services, ie, electrician, hairdresser, graphic designer; however running and managing the business is much harder. The rewards then are that we do what we love, but a lot of the times, it can feel like a job.
RN: Name something about your business that most people don’t know.
IMU: James is originally from Scotland and Angela, the US. We met in corporate America, got married and started our coaching and consulting practice together over six years ago.
RN: What is the unique value proposition your clients know when using your services?
IMU: Coaching in it’s truest form is about discovery and helping business owners see beyond their blind spot and do things to get out of their comfort zone.
Unfortunately that is only about 10 percent of the problem that owners have. We are unique in the fact that while we quickly assess where the business owner is, where he or she wants to go and what are the roadblocks our value comes from our ability and skills in helping the owner actually implement the solution in their business — the 90 percent that most other coaches won’t or can’t do. Lake Thoreau in South Reston is a magical spot — it is calm, quiet, and beautiful.
Every home along its banks is gorgeous too! Harbourside Cluster is one of those communities.
Harbourside Cluster is one of the smaller neighborhoods in Reston, with only 14 contemporary patio homes. About 80 percent of these brick, three- and four-bedroom homes are direct lakefront. All have lake access, and many also have spectacular views of the Reston National Golf Course.
It is one of South Reston’s older clusters, as it was built between 1978 and 1981. All homes have a garage, which is especially nice after a snowy winter like we had this year.
Harbourside Cluster is located right off South Lakes Drive and Upper Lake Drive. It’s walking distance to Terraset Elementary, Langston Hughes Middle and South Lakes High School.
It’s also a half-mile walk to Reston Metro Station or three blocks to multiple bus lines.
Enjoy nearby tennis courts and pool, paved walking trails thru wooded areas around the lake and golf course across street. This neighborhood is less than three miles to Reston Town Center, seven miles to Dulles Airport, and less than half-mile to Dulles Airport Access Road.
Come look at Harbourside Cluster for serene lakeside living in Reston.

Most often in my practice I try to recommend to my clients that they purchase high-quality upholstered pieces.
There is nothing worse than your sofa or chair cushions breaking down and your frame coming apart after a few years of use. A good sofa should last practically forever.
The frame should be made of kiln dried hardwood. Kiln drying removes all the moisture in the wood thus helping it to maintain its shape and stability. The joints should be dowelled, glued and screwed. In addition, the springs on high quality pieces should be eight-string hand tied. This means the craftsman has connected each spring to the adjoining one with a strong twine and secured on the corner and sides of the frame.
Cushions are a personal preference, however I generally try to steer my clients to an upgraded spring blend down seat. A full down cushion is hard to maintain and requires constant fluffing. You can save the pure down for accent pillows if you choose.
The fabric is also a personal preference, however I try to guide my clients to a fabric which has at least 15,000 “double rubs.” A double rub is a measurement of a fabric’s abrasion resistance and is sometimes noted as the Wyzenbeek method.
Heavy duty fabrics have at least 15,000 double rubs, medium duty have 9,000-15,000 and light have 3,000-9,000. I have found that most fabrics on the market have a greater double rub number — the higher the better. Sometimes the fabric you choose will need to be backed. A good manufacturer will advise you if you need to back the fabric with a latex backing.
A good cushion should last for the life of your sofa, however you must perform a maintenance check periodically such as, adjusting the fabric cover over your cushion so the welts line back up. This will require unzipping the fabric cover and maneuvering the cushion back into position. The back cushions should be plumped weekly or after sitting. Don’t be shy about beating or stomping on the backs. Try to flip your cushions weekly.
If you find your cushions are not holding up, ask your manufacturer to replace them or have your local upholsterer to replace them.
If you need more information regarding high-quality upholstery pieces, please contact me at [email protected] – or visit my web site at www.cindylbeyer.com.
Here is Mowgli, a young pug who is this week’s Reston Pet of the Week. Here is what owner Melissa has to say about him:
Mowgli is a 2-year-old pug who still has his puppy vigor! He is the most social, happy dog you will ever meet. He enjoys going for walks by Lake Thoreau, chilling out with other canines at the Baron Cameron Dog Park, and meeting other pugs at the Reston and Northern Virginia Pug Meetups. Mowgli, alias “Bub,” is excited for the Pet Fiesta in May at the Town Center!
Sometimes Mowgli has cat-like qualities. He perches on the back of the couch to watch the people of Reston walk by on the trails outside while he drifts off to sleep. His pug snorts sometimes sound like kitten purrs.
Bub’s favorite treat is rawhides dipped in peanut butter. As soon as the peanut butter is gone, he’ll insist that you get him more. He appears to reach nirvana while chewing on sticks. He can’t wait for the warm weather to return so that he can bask in the sunshine again. If you see him out and about, feel free to give him a pet or a belly rub.

Does your cat ever have issues with an upset stomach? Do they vomit on occasion or even have diarrhea sometimes? If you answered yes to either of those questions, your cat may have an underlying gastrointestinal issue.
One of the most common in cats is IBD, or Irritable Bowel Disease. IBD can be very uncomfortable for your cat, but learning to recognize the symptoms of a flare up can help you manage the symptoms and keep your cat more comfortable.
What is IBD?
IBD is not actually a single disease. Instead, the term refers to a group of chronic gastrointestinal (GI) disorders that are caused by an infiltration of inflammatory cells into the wall of a cat’s gastrointestinal tract.
These cells cause a thickening of the digestive tract lining. They also inhibit digestion, as well as the normal absorption and passage of food. Though it can affect cats at any age, IBD is more commonly seen in felines that are middle-aged or older.
What causes IBD?
What actually causes the infiltration of inflammatory cells is not currently known. It may occur as a result of the body’s response to bacteria or parasites. Or it may be due to an allergy to certain ingredients in your cat’s food. IBD could also be caused by an underlying abnormality in your feline’s immune system. Read More
This week’s Reston Pet of the Week is Goomba, an English Bulldog puppy. Here is what his owner Heidi has to say about the little guy:
Meet Goomba, our new English Bulldog puppy! He’s 9 weeks old.
He is our first puppy so we are learning and having a blast trying to keep up with him!
He’s full of energy and makes us laugh with his crazy expressions.
Goomba loves playing tug-of-war with his toys. He’s definitely mastered the “puppy dog eyes” that make you just melt. Everyone loves him and he loves attention from people.

Chamber Spotlight is a feature sponsored by the Greater Reston Chamber of Commerce. Today’s Q-and-A is with chamber member Mike Jennings, President of BEI Networks. Jennings and his wife, Ellen own the company, which provides IT support to businesses throughout the Washington area.
Why did you decide to start your business in Reston? We purchased BEI from the former owners when it was located in Arlington. We moved it to Reston in 2004 because we reside here, the Dulles corridor was growing, and we are very involved in Reston in both our business and personal lives.
What are the challenges and rewards of being a business owner? Challenges: hiring good people, balancing working “in” the business and working “on” the business. Rewards: getting to know and helping our clients (I’ve learned so much about many different types of businesses) and working with smart, creative, dedicated employees
Name something about your business that most people don’t know? BEI was launched in 1987 and supported mostly Novell networks in the beginning; We’ve been an Ultimate Seahawk Sponsor of South Lakes High School’s athletic programs since 2009; We are the leading provider of IT support to ambulatory physician practices in metro DC and the only IT service provider with its own internal HIPAA compliance program.
What is the unique value proposition your client’s know of when using your services? Healthcare practices come to us when they’re tired of their operations and clinical workflow being impacted by never-ending IT problems. We help by solving healthcare’s unique IT challenges and then proactively managing their IT with a thorough knowledge of and deep experience with EMRs, medical devices, and HIPAA. This allows them to focus on seeing patients efficiently and thereby increase patient satisfaction and improve cash flow.
Describe a typical day as the business owner — I’m in charge of our service operations, so there is a lot of continuous interaction with our support engineers throughout the day. I also have my fair share of meetings. I meet with clients regularly, with vendors who help support our clients (phone, cabling, telecom, software and hardware vendors) and with our management team. I often function as the VCIO (Virtual Chief Information Office) for many of our clients so that means working with them to plan how their technology should evolve as their businesses grow and change.
How has the Greater Reston Chamber of Commerce helped your business grow? We’ve met partners and prospects via the Chamber, but also have learned a lot about the Reston community. I already live in Reston, my kids have attended Reston schools (my son is at Virginia Tech and my daughter has graduated from UVA), I own a business in Reston, I am on the Reston Planning & Zoning Committee and the Chamber has helped me complete that circle.
What is the quote that best describes your business? We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit. — Aristotle 8.
What is your advice to someone who is thinking about owning a business? Enjoy the highs and when you hit some lows have the confidence that you’ll get through it. It may seem like there is NO WAY to overcome the rough patch you’re in but if you stay focused on what you believe are the right things to do then it won’t be long before that rough patch is just a memory.

One of my favorite neighborhoods of lakefront, single-family homes is Purple Beech Drive in South Reston.
I love contemporary architecture, and I especially think the design of these homes fits with Reston — the wood-sided homes feel organic and natural. The sizes and layouts are all different, but typically they are four-bedroom, multi-level homes. They have beautiful wooded yards, and the entire neighborhood is well landscaped and attractive.
Several of the homes have direct lakefront access to Lake Thoreau, and all have full lake access and privileges. Imagine paddling on the lake during the summer or enjoying a picnic on your own floating barge (a favorite among many people who live on Reston’s lakes).
This cul-de-sac is quiet and peaceful–a great place to let your children play outside and enjoy nature.
A lovely walking path circles the lake, making it easy to walk to South Lakes Village Center to enjoy a meal, or simply go for a run. Terraset Elementary School, Langston Hughes Middle School, and South Lake High School are less than one-quarter mile walk through neighborhoods.
Other nearby amenities include the Walker Nature Education Center, Reston National Golf Course, Wiehle-Reston East Metro station (about 1 mile away), Reston Town Center, pools and tennis courts.
Purple Beech Drive is the kind of neighborhood that is close to anything you want to do, but also perfect if you just want to hang out in your beautiful home.

There were 27 properties that went from Pending to Sold this past week. In Reston, there are 226 Active listings. In this faster-moving spring market, that represents just over a two-month’s supply. There were also 32 homes that went from Active to Pending in the same seven-day period.
If you’re in the market to purchase, be sure to have your ducks in a row before heading out — this means sitting down with your lender first to get pre-approved. If you’re thinking of selling, the faster- moving market doesn’t mean you can cut corners in getting your home ready to sell. Making your home looks its best and pricing it well will reward you with a fast contract.
Here are a few of the houses that sold last week.
