Walden Cluster is one of the many hidden gems along the banks of Lake Thoreau in South Reston.

This charming neighborhood consists of 52 townhouses on Swans Neck Way (off of Ridge Heights Road) built between 1980 and 1982. The homes are brick and cedar, 3-level, 2-to-4 bedroom homes. Each house also has at least one assigned parking space.

2027 Swans NeckIf you love the idea of living on one of Reston’s lakes, this is a great neighborhood to investigate. About 30 percent of the Walden Cluster homes are direct lakefront property, but all the homes in the neighborhood enjoy the use of Lake Thoreau.

This cluster is wonderful for families — there is a great community tot lot. Better yet, it’s located just across the street from Terraset Elementary, Langston Hughes Middle and South Lakes High School. No missing the bus!

It’s also an easy walk to South Lakes Village Center — with several eateries, a Starbucks, and Safeway. And, of course, this neighborhood is close to the Wiehle-Reston East Metro station.

So if you’re looking for a place to park your canoe, take a look at Walden Cluster.

Live Beyond 9 Lives banner

This is a sponsored post by Elizabeth Arguelles, veterinarian and owner of Just Cats Clinic at Lake Anne Plaza.

Veterinary care for our feline friends continues to advance and improve allowing us to help our cats live longer with more quality years.

Unfortunately, veterinary medicine still can’t cure everything, especially the effects of time and aging. Feline hospice care has emerged as a way to help give your cat comfort during the end of life allowing you to have more precious time and your cat to remain comfortable.

How can hospice care help your cat?

Just like human medicine, hospice care is a treatment plan designed to provide supportive care to cats that are in the final stage of life whether it’s from progressive disease, cancer or old age. The main goal is to ensure that your cat maintains quality of life as comfortable and as pain free as possible.

When is hospice care advised?

Unfortunately, there usually comes a time in every cat’s life when its veterinarian concludes that further treatment will not improve its condition and that continuing any aggressive procedures might cause unnecessary pain or discomfort. Hospice care is not meant to take the place of euthanasia — there will be a point even in hospice care that euthanasia is the most humane course of action, but for those that euthanasia is not an option, it helps to make your cat’s remaining time as comfortable as possible.

What does hospice care entail?

Pain management: Pain management is the most important element of hospice care. Allowing a sick or elderly cat to suffer is unnecessary with modern veterinary medicine, so your vet will likely prescribe pain medications to ensure your cat is comfortable. Be advised, though, that cats are masters at hiding when they are in discomfort. You may have to look for subtle signs of pain, including hiding, avoiding contact, changes in body language like ears back or squinting eyes and changes in gait and movement.

Comfort: Comfort involves environmental changes in your cat’s living space. Ensuring your cat has clean comfortable bedding, stays warm, and has easy access to food, water, and a litter box is crucial.

Remember, aging felines can be painful and stiff from arthritis so providing a litter box that’s easy to get into and out of is important. Make sure to keep all of your cat’s essentials on the same floor of your house so they do not have to go up and down stairs. Even with the pain medication, your feline friend might have heightened pain sensitivity, so take care to handle it very gently.

cindy beyer revised

This is a sponsored post by Reston interior designer Cindy Beyer, a Reston Now Best Reston Business winner.

A few years ago, I had the pleasure of redesigning the interiors of two townhomes in Lake Anne’s historic Waterview Cluster. These lovely townhomes designed by world-renowned architects were built in the early 1960s. The first occupants moved in about 1964.

These homes are approximately 1,600-1,700 square feet and are surprisingly large in feel. They both were cantilevered over the lake with a beautiful view of the fountain, so keeping the view of the lake was very important to us in the design process.

On both occasions, we renovated the kitchen. We found that the perfect kitchen design for this space was to keep the original “galley kitchen.”  I feel that a galley kitchen is one of the most efficient and functional designs, and the beauty about these kitchens is one end is an outside wall with a big picture window thus eliminating the pass-through traffic patterns of most galley kitchens.

The other end is a pass through to the dining room and living room. The pass-through area consists of a closet that houses the HVAC (RELAC) system. We considered moving the system to another part of the home, but after much thought we could not justify the cost associated with such an endeavor. Instead we decided to use that area as a butler’s pantry and brought the feel of the kitchen out into the next room by using the same cabinets and tile backslash. Our kitchen just grew in size.

With the first townhome, we extended the same cabinets into the dining room creating a beautiful built-in buffet cabinet the entire length of the dining room wall. We installed seeded glass upper cabinets with interior lighting as well as under-cabinet lighting. The results were not only spectacular, but also added a substantial amount of storage space.

The second floor has the master bedroom facing the street. We relocated the master bedroom to overlook the lake and enlarged the master bathroom. This was easily done because the original design was such that not a tremendous amount of plumbing relocation was required.

In the second home, we incorporated the laundry room into the large master bathroom.  Imagine sipping your morning coffee looking at the spectacular fountain.

The construction was quite simple, but with older homes you will need to upgrade your electrical panel if you are adding any new appliances. A simple call to Dominion Power and a good contractor can solve any electrical issues. We did not encounter many other big issues.

The entire project went extremely smooth. My hats off to Robert Simon and the architects of beautiful Lake Anne!

This week’s Pet of the Week is a shelter Shih-Tzu named Beanie, who was proudly adopted two years ago. Here is what owner Emily has to say about how she found her pal, who was formerly named Sherman:

Not often do you find Shih-Tzu’s at the animal shelter, but one morning as I was searching the Loudoun County Animal Shelter website, a scraggly brown Shih-Tzu named Sherman was listed as available after being surrendered.

The poor thing had hair longer than my own and he had total fear and confusion in his eyes. I immediately dragged my parents to the shelter to see what this poor little dog was like and if he could be a playmate to our other Shih-Tzu, Bella. As we were heading back to look at him, another family with several kids came in asking to see Sherman as well. I smiled knowing we had beat them to it! We took Sherman to one of those private viewing rooms and he immediately rolled over to his back and let us pet him all over. He looked exactly like a wookie — and smelled like one too!

After adopting Sherman, we quickly renamed him Beanie because he was a jumping bean. We have had Beanie for two years now, and he has been the best dog we could ask for. Although we have been through many health scares with him, including eye ulcers, eyelid surgery and countless trips to the vet, I know that he is living the best life he can.

I have never had a dog that was so grateful for a new life and has ever loved being cuddled and held like a baby. He is so happy now and receives compliments wherever he goes. We have thankfully cleaned up his wookie hair-do but now looks like an ewok!

I can’t imagine why he was given up but so grateful he was. I can’t picture my life without Beanie and hope that I can spend many more years watching him run around the house chasing our cat.

Reston townhomes make great homes for first-time homebuyers — couples, singles, or growing families — or people who just want to downsize.

Sawyers Cluster in South Reston is a particularly good neighborhood if you’re looking for an affordable home in a great area.

This townhome community was built in 1974, the homes are a modest size. Most have around 1,200 square feet of living space, although a few are larger.

2216 Cartwright PlaceSome feature great basements and all have assigned parking spaces. The townhomes are mostly two or three bedroom, but there are a few four-bedroom units. Most of them have one and a half baths, although a few have three.

Located off South Lakes Drive in South Reston, Sawyers Cluster has easy access to swimming pools, tennis courts and basketball courts. The short drive to the Toll Road and Wiehle-Reston East Metro station make trips to Dulles International Airport or into DC a breeze.

And, of course, the miles of Reston trails, Reston Town Center, and South Lakes Village Center are also close by.

For families looking for an affordable townhome in Reston, Sawyers Cluster is the perfect place.

Berry of Berry & Berry, PLLC, an employment and labor law firm located in Reston Town Center that specializes in federal employee, security clearance, retirement, and private sector employee matters. They write biweekly on RestonNow.

Federal and state laws generally require most employers to pay overtime. Although Virginia does not have its own overtime requirement, it follows federal requirements for determining overtime pay and eligibility.

Federal laws regarding overtime eligibility and pay are covered under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and are administered by the U.S. Department of Labor, Wage and Hour Division. As such, overtime pay-related questions in Virginia are typically referred to the U.S. Department of Labor.

Larger employers, usually defined as having more than $500,000 in annual sales, are typically bound by FLSA requirements. However, smaller employers generally must pay overtime if their employees work in interstate commerce or conduct business between states, including making phones calls to or from another state, sending mail out of state, or handling goods coming from or going to other states.

Unless specifically exempted, employees who are required or permitted to work more than 40 hours during a workweek generally must receive premium pay for such overtime work at a rate of at least one and one-half times the employee’s regular rate of pay.

This is a sponsored post by veterinarian Elizabeth Arguelles, owner of Just Cats Clinic at Lake Anne Plaza. She writes weekly on Reston Now.

We’ve all made that unfortunate discovery, and of course it’s on the carpet — it’s a hairball. For most cats, hairballs are completely normal and nothing to worry about, but hairballs can occasionally indicate some potential health concerns.

What are hairballs? And what causes them?

Not surprisingly, hairballs are clumps of fur that collect in your cat’s stomach as a result of the grooming process. Though most of the hair that cats swallow passes through the digestive system and ends up in the stool, some of it remains in the stomach or small intestine. The presence of these foreign bodies irritate your cat’s digestive system and triggers a very sensitive gag reflex, leading to that retching sound that every cat owner knows.

Can hairballs be harmful to cats?

As mentioned above, hairballs are generally benign, causing little more than periodic hacking, gagging and vomiting. Occasionally, they may also cause a decrease in appetite, constipation or an upset stomach. In addition, frequently hacking up hairballs can lead to your cat vomiting food or mucus instead as it tries to get the fur clumps out. If your feline friend is retching up hairballs frequently, it could indicate that your kitty is suffering from underlying gastrointestinal problems.

Frequently, owners think their cat is trying to get up a hairball, but nothing is coming up. Cats are really good at vomiting — if they need to get a hairball up, they will. If you are seeing your cat attempting to get a hairball up, but nothing is coming, it’s likely coughing. Coughing can be indicators of asthma, parasitic infections, or even fungal infections so be sure to contact your vet for an appointment if you notice this behavior.

So what constitutes vomiting more often than normal?

It depends entirely on the cat in question. Given that longhaired breeds are more susceptible to getting hairballs, those cats will have them more frequently than their shorthaired cousins. Because of this, it can be hard to tell what “normal” is. So the best course of action is to consult your vet if you believe that your kitty is getting hairballs too frequently. He or she can run tests to rule out any underlying conditions.

What can be done to reduce hairballs?

Assuming that there is no pernicious cause for your cat’s hairballs, the following steps can help reduce their frequency:

If your cat has long hair, brush it daily to reduce the quantity of fur shed and therefore amount of hair swallowed while grooming. Following the brushing, you can also wipe your cat’s fur with a clean cloth to remove any loose hairs.

Talk to your veterinarian about feeding your cat specially formulated foods that reduce hairballs. In addition to reducing shedding, these also tend to improve its skin and coat, and to increase the amount of fiber in your kitty’s diet.

Ask your vet about hairball remedies or lubricants that help your cat pass the hair through the intestinal tract instead of hacking it up.

If your cat grooms itself excessively (for reasons other than an underlying disorder), try distracting it by playing with it more frequently or by introducing a new toy into playtime.

This week’s Reston Pet of the Week is a pet in need of a home. Meet Snowball, a female Maine Coon Cat who is being fostered by Homeward Trails Pet Rescue.

Here is what her foster parents have to say:

Snowball is a long-haired, Maine Coon mix girl who is about 2-3 years old.  She is incredibly beautiful, sweet, reserved kitty.

She does not seek out attention but loves to be petted, brushed, held and cuddled — she doesn’t want you to put her down!

Snowball would do best in a quieter home with someone who wants to give her the love she deserves. She is absolutely stunning with her gorgeous long white fur! Her fur will require maintenance to avoid matting.

Upon arriving at a rural shelter, she had a punctured left eye which is most probably blind now but has healed.

Read more about Snowball on her Petfinder.com page.

If you adopt a pet through our Pet of the Week feature, let us know!

Our sponsor, Becky’s Pet Care, will give you a sample of dog or cat treats, along with $100 in Becky’s Bucks.

Becky’s Pet Care, the winner of three Angie’s List Super Service Awards and the National Association of Professional Pet Sitters’ 2013 Business of the Year, provides professional dog walking and pet sitting services in Reston and Northern Virginia.

You also can nominate your pet to be our pet of the week. Email [email protected] with a 2-3 paragraph bio and at least 3-4 horizontally-oriented photos of your pet.

This Saturday, you’ll have a good reason to tell your friends and family to go jump in a lake!

That’s right — people will be jumping in Lake Anne on purpose. But it’s for a great cause, and that’s why participants do it year after year.

I’m talking about the Annual Freezin’ for a Reason Virginia Polar Dip. Superheros, Gumby, and whole lot of BFFs in pink tutus will make the plunge for raise money for Camp Sunshine.

It’s the ice bucket challenge, only you jump into the ice rather than it dumping onto your head.

Charities don’t get much worthier than Camp Sunshin. The weeklong sleepaway camp provides respite, support, joy, and hope to children with life-threatening illnesses and their families. The program is free of charge to all families, and includes 24-hour onsite medical and psychosocial support. Camp Sunshine also provides bereavement sessions for families who have lost a child to supported illnesses.

Virginia Polar Dip 2014/Credit: David Madison PhotographyFreezin’ for a Reason raises much-needed money to send children to the camp. This year’s goal is to raise $100,000, which will allow 50 families from the Mid-Atlantic area to go to the camp. Through pledges or self-sponsorship, each participant will raise/donate a minimum of $100 for the opportunity to take the icy plunge.

In addition to knowing they’ve helped a child in need, they all also receive very cute shirt that proclaims “I DID IT” event shirt. If you aren’t ready to jump, come and watch the fun — it’s a great time on the plaza!

The plunge takes place on Saturday, Feb. 7 at Lake Anne Plaza. It kicks off at noon with family-friendly activities and warm-up, and the actual dip begins at 2 p.m.

For the fifth year, 97.1 WASH-FM morning show radio personality Chilli Amar will emcee the event.

Event sponsors are: Lake Anne Plaza, Whole Foods Market Reston, Reston Lifestyle Magazine, Tropical Smoothie Cafe, David Madison Photography, Reston Association, Reston Community Center, Spotted MP (Marketing + Public Relations), Kalypso’s Sports Tavern, Fairfax Christian School, 97.1 WASH-FM, Salon Khouri, Fusion 360, Small Change Consignment, and Sheraton Reston Hotel. This is a sponsored post by veterinarian Elizabeth Arguelles, owner of Just Cats Clinic at Lake Anne Plaza. She writes weekly on Reston Now.

Though relatively new to the West, traditional Chinese treatments such as acupuncture have been used to improve the health of humans and animals in the Far East for thousands of years. At Just Cats Clinic we are very excited to announce that one of our full time veterinarians will be starting the Chi Institute’s program to become certified in veterinary acupuncture.

What is “traditional Chinese medicine?”

Traditional Chinese medicine is based on Daoist philosophy, which sees the body as a microcosm of the larger universe around it. As such, practitioners believe that the forces and laws that govern the external environment also regulate the body’s inner workings.

Diseases are the result of imbalances inside the body, and diagnosing them requires identifying the underlying pattern of said imbalances. Because the body is an interconnected system of functions, a disease and the disharmony that causes it have to be treated together. This is the reason why the term “holistic” is often used in reference to traditional Chinese medicine.

There are four branches of Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine: herbal medicine, food therapy, Tui-na (a type of massage) and acupuncture. The practice of using Chinese herbal medicine can treat a variety of diseases and most herbs can be compounded in easy to administer forms.

Food therapy tailors diet and food ingredients based on each patient’s need to prevent imbalance with in the body. Tui-na, a form of Chinese medical massage, targets different acupoints in the body to promote circulation and correct imbalances. Acupuncture stimulates the healing process by using tiny needles to normalize nerve functions and circulation. The needles are inserted into different acupoints on your cat’s body, depending on which particular ailment is being treated.

 Needles?!?!?!

Though the thought of sticking needles into your feline friend may send shivers down your spine, acupuncture is actually a painless experience for your kitty. When a properly trained acupuncturist inserts the needles, they do so in such a way that no pain signals are sent to your cat’s brain. As a result, the process is so relaxing that your cat may even fall asleep during the treatment.

How can acupuncture help your cat?

Used in conjunction with existing Western treatments, acupuncture can be a great, non-invasive way to improve the health of cats suffering from long-term pain, arthritis, asthma, allergies chronic kidney disease and a host of other ailments.

It can also ease the discomfort associated with the side effects of radiation and chemotherapy in felines undergoing cancer treatments. In addition, acupuncture can relieve the pain and stiffness that older cats often feel, increasing their quality of life, boosting their energy levels and hopefully adding years to their lives.

When looking for a veterinary acupuncturist, always make sure they are a licensed veterinarian and that they have had formal training in veterinary acupuncture. While acupuncture is incredibly safe, it must be done by a practitioner that has completed training to ensure its being done correctly.

One of the most recognized programs for acupuncture is the Chi Institute of Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine. It involves a rigorous program with hands on training with certified acupuncturists, class room hours with small student to teacher ratio, and an examination process. The Chi Institute is also endorsed by the China National Society of Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine.
