Meet Noah, a mini-Golden Retriever mix available for adoption.

Here is what his friends at Worthy Dog Rescue have to say about him:

Meet Noah. This mini-Golden Retriever mix spent his entire life tied to a tree with an overturned plastic trash can as his only source of shelter. He was fed every other day and was lucky to get fresh water. This was a terribly lonely and neglectful life for Noah, but he has made an amazingly quick transition to home life, and is now soaking up lots of love and attention from his foster family.

Noah has had such a transformational past few weeks – he’s been groomed, spent time in doggy daycare, and received an A++ report card for how he interacted with the other dogs. He has taken on a love for toys and appreciates a comfy couch. He now gets daily walks, and gets very excited when it’s walk time, cherishing the opportunity to explore the outside world. He still pulls a little on leash, but this is all new to him and he’s learning.

He’s currently being fostered with another pup, Gracee, and does well sharing his toys, the couch, and his foster mom’s affection. He follows Gracee’s lead and has learned from her, and would do great with another dog buddy in his home. Noah has been around young kids and is very friendly, giving them a gentle sniff and allowing them to pet and love him. The neighbors have remarked at how sweet he is, and by nature Noah a very friendly dog. Some male strangers have given him pause, causing him to bark, but his friendship can be purchased with a few treats.

Noah’s foster mom describes him as curious, and says he doesn’t seem to have any fear when it comes to going to new places or doing new things. At home, he’s super snuggly and just loves to be acknowledged. When she tells him “enough” he will go lay down. He’s housetrained, and will wander into his crate to sleep during the day, but is not very fond of the door being closed, scratching to get out. That’s still a work in progress, but he learned “sit” in just a few days and is very smart and eager to please.

This gorgeous pup deserves a great life, and Worthy Dog Rescue is happy to help him find his way home. He has been fully vetted, treated for heartworm, and will be coming to N. VA on 9/9, so apply today!

Are you and Noah a match? If so, let us know and our sponsor, Becky’s Pet Care, will send you some treats and prizes.

The dog days of summer are coming to an end, and Reston’s four-legged residents need to get their last fun of the season in too.

For the second year, Reston Association will host its “Dog Paddle” event next weekend. It’s an opportunity for man’s best friends to splash in RA pools that have closed for the summer, community events supervisor Ashleigh Soloff said.

“[It’s] a super fun event,” she said.

About 70 canines participated in the event in 2016, Soloff said.

Appropriately enough, Dogwood Pool (2460 Green Range Road) will host the event Saturday, Aug. 26. The next day, the dogs will splash at North Hills Pool (1325 North Village Road) will welcome pets. Each day, the events will go from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

No people are permitted in the water with the dogs, and current dog licenses are required. Dogs must be kept under control and sociable at all times, and female dogs in heat will not be permitted.

Registration can be done through Reston Association’s WebTrac system or by calling 703-435-6531. Cost is $4 for dogs of Reston Association members and $6 for dogs of non-members.

DogFest Walk ‘n Roll, a charity event to benefit Canine Companions for Independence, will come to Reston for the first time next month.

This will be the fourth annual D.C.-area gathering for the nationwide event. In previous years, it was held in Arlington’s Pentagon City.

The event is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 10 at Reston Town Center. From a press release:

Furry friends and their families are invited to join us for a day of fun, festivities, graduate speakers, dog demonstrations, music, food and more.

Admission is free, parking is free and our event is accessible.

Last year, hundreds joined us from DC, Maryland, Virginia and Delaware to walk and roll in our biggest celebration yet raising nearly $65,000 with an agility course, demonstrations, treats, freebies, raffles, and best of all, stories of real graduate teams who live and work here in the DMV.

Celebrate the community of people and dogs that make it possible for Canine Companions to show that the most advanced technology capable of transforming the lives of people with disabilities has a cold nose and a warm heart.

Canine Companions for Independence provides highly-trained assistance dogs to adults, children and veterans with disabilities FREE of charge.

Dozens of DogFest Walk ‘n Roll events are held yearly around the nation.

All are welcome to the event. To register as a volunteer, or to make a donation to the cause, check out the event’s website.

Meet Sis, an English Setter available for adoption.

Here is what her friends at Safe Haven Puppy Rescue have to say about her:

Sis is a gorgeous girl with a silky coat who is very inquisitive and interested in her surroundings. She’s affectionate to people and “mostly” comes when called. She gets along really good with other dogs.

Sis was owned by a hunter, who wanted her to be his hunting dog. Sis had other ideas. Her idea of life is to go for walks with her human, have a comfy doggie bed, and get lots of cuddles and kisses.

She’s a neat size — around 40 pounds, and walks nicely on a leash, but is still a little unsure with things like steps, etc., and hasn’t quite grasped that it’s actually OK for her to be inside. A little love and she’ll be an absolute prize.

If you think you can give this regal girl the kind of home she was born to have, please email [email protected] for an application.

Are you and Sis a match? If so, let us know and our sponsor, Becky’s Pet Care, will send you some treats and prizes.

Pet of the Week: Nico

This is a sponsored post from Becky’s Pet Care, a professional pet care service in Northern Virginia.

This week’s Reston Pet of the Week is Nico, now living in Reston after being brought up in Arizona.

Here is what his owner, Raj, had to say about him:

Meet Nico, a 10 ½-year-old Lhasa Apso, Miniature Poodle, Chihuahua and German Shepherd mix. You might take a look at Nico’s photos and wonder if this mix is possible, but he definitely has some German Shepherd in him. (In fact, he is 12.5 percent Alsatian according to a DNA test!)

Nico has led quite an uphill life. He was found as a little puppy running around on the streets of the Arizona-Mexico border. We saw him at the rescue shelter the day after he was brought in and adopted him immediately. He soon got accustomed to comfortable living. Everything was going great until after Nico turned 8, when his vet said that he needed to have neck surgery right away to remove fluid from his spine that was causing him a lot of pain whenever he moved. He was a very good boy through the difficult ordeal and came out healthier than ever!

Nico is now proud to call Reston his new home and is already enjoying the smells and sounds. His favorite activity — other than laying on the cool floor during the dog days of the Northern Virginia summer — is watching the golfers at Reston National.

This week’s Reston Pet of the Week is Shelly, a Golden Retriever rescue from Tennessee.

Here is what her owner, Laura, had to say about her:

Shelly is an approximately 8-year-old Golden Retriever who was rescued from Tennessee. Her owners did not take care of her and she was hit by a car, resulting in her losing use of a back leg and being left at a shelter. However, the injury hasn’t slowed her down one bit!

Since adoption in 2014 from Adopt a Golden Knoxville, Shelly has added so much to our lives. A true “Velcro Golden”, all she wants is to be with her family. As a new resident of Reston, she is absolutely loving her big backyard. Most days are spent sitting outside in a patio chair (her favorite!) next to Dad who works from home. When she’s not relaxing on the deck, Shelly can be found patrolling the yard for squirrels and chipmunks with her Chihuahua sister, Mitzi.

This week’s Reston Pets of the Week are Wrangler and Blue, a pair of dogs who love to cuddle.

Here is what their owner, Kelly, had to say about them:

Wrangler and Blue are sisters residing in Reston. They are the best foster sisters around and help dogs with Lucky Dog Animal Rescue find forever homes.

Blue is a 4-year-old Bay Retriever mix and loves to get attention from any human she can and steal her sister’s tennis balls for a good game of chase. She is an avid swimmer and love hiking and going on walks and runs.

Wrangler is a 2-year-old Pit Bull/American Bulldog mix. She is obsessed with playing fetch and is also really into anything water-related. She works hard to end breed discrimination by being a certified therapy dog through Pet Partners. We work with the Heeling House and kids with special needs.

They are big-time Steelers fans and sport their jerseys on Sundays. At the end of the day, Blue and Wrangler are happy to cuddle up on top of one another for a much-needed cuddle puddle.

This week’s Reston Pet of the Week is Ty, a Jack Russell Terrier.

Here is what his owner, John, had to say about him:

Ty is a Jack Russell Terrier and a New York transplant who loves chasing chasing tennis balls, foxes and digging holes in the ground near our home in South Reston.

He loves hanging out with his two human sisters, Maya and Sienna. He is an affectionate and loving dog whose owners love him. He has also never met a stranger who he hasn’t licked.

He spends his time chasing squirrels, playing with frogs and digging holes in our front and backyard. He is also a huge Michigan football fan, as evidenced by his collar.

He is 12 years old, but plays like a puppy (sometimes looks like one too when he has a haircut) and has a heart of gold.

Meet Baloo, a deaf Pitbull currently in foster care in the Reston area through City Dogs Rescue.

Here is what his foster moms have to say about him:

Meet Baloo. This gorgeous stud is a 2-year-old deaf white pit mix, but the truth of the matter is that he is 60 pounds of marshmallow. Baloo hails from Pickens County, South Carolina, where he was an unclaimed stray. His life goal is to find a family who loves the outdoors, snuggling and naps.

Baloo is an excellent house dog! He is well house-trained and loves looking out the window to see what’s going on in the world. He loves humans, getting petted, snuggling while watching movies, and is good in his crate. When he wants to go outside, he simply stands by the door and waits. Baloo rarely barks. He loves playtime — with other dogs, with space to run and sniff, with toys and, especially, chasing a laser pointer. His Achilles’ heel is toys; he is toy possessive, and should not play with other dogs and toys simultaneously. Like a true gentleman, he is patient with humans of all ages; recent months have seen him stabbed in the nose by a hoard of toddlers and the noble Baloo endured it with grace.

Many people have questions about Baloo being deaf. A common one is, “How deaf is he?” Answer: All the way deaf. Baloo makes up for it by sniffing every nook and cranny of a new space. He is also incredibly smart and very focused on his humans. He understands 11 signs: Sit, stay, lie down, paw, stop, yay, Baloo, walk, eat, play and crate. This guy is quick-to-train and loves learning new commands and signs. In his free time, Baloo likes to relax and goof off. He sometimes licks the air for no reason, gets into mischief by opening tupperware, chases his tail, stalks and pounces on spots of refracted light, and lays down frog-leg style on air vents to enjoy the breeze.
