"Closed" signs on Saladworks doorsSaladworks in Plaza America has permanently shut its doors.

The restaurant, which boasted it had “America’s best salads,” posted signs on its doors notifying customers of the closure. The signs recommend customers visit other locations in Richmond or College Park, Maryland.

The owner of the Reston branch of Saladworks decided to close the store, said Jena Henderson, a spokeswoman with the company.

Henderson could not say what the specifics reasons were for closing the Reston location.

“We love the Reston market and the people of Reston and are so grateful for their patronage over the years,” Henderson said. “We certainly have this earmarked as a market we would like to have a presence in in the future.”

Primo Italiano

Primo Italiano at Plaza America appears to have closed its doors.

The pizza-and-sub restaurant has been located at 11888 Plaza America since the shopping center opened in the 1990s, but had changed ownership recently.

The restaurant has had a hand-lettered “closed” sign up on the door since last week, but all the fixtures and supplies seem to still be in place. Reston Now placed several calls to the store, but there was no answer, so it is not yet known whether the closure is for good or temporarily.

M. Been Jewelers at Plaza America

After nearly 13 years at Plaza America, M. Beem Jewelers will close for good later this spring.

Owner Michael Beem said in a mailer to customers that he has “decided to pursue other interests” and will shut the store at 11730 Plaza America Dr. #120.

“In life there are choices, and I have now decided to pursue other interests and close this chapter of my life,” he said.

The store is having a huge sale to clear inventory. All merchandise is on sale, with some fine jewelry priced at up to 70 percent off.

Store employees said they are unsure of the exact closing date, but it will likely be in mid-June.

JC Comfort

J.C. Comfort Shoes, located at Plaza America, will close its doors in the next few weeks, the owners said.

After 12 years at Plaza America, the owners are retiring.

The store is currently holding a big sale, with 20 to 50 percent off on all shoes in order to clear out merchandise. When the stock is gone, the store will close.

J.C. Comfort sells footwear from brands such as Dansko, Ecco, Mephisto and other comfort lines.

This leaves Reston with few shoe stores. Allen Edmonds, a men’s shoe store at Reston Town Center, and Payless at Northpoint are Reston’s other shoe stores.

Reston's Champps closed in 2013It has been nearly nine months since Champps at Plaza America abruptly closed its doors.

There have been few signs of retail life there since, despite a rumor that Hooters was checking out the space for a Reston location.

The shopping plaza was sold last month to TIAA-CREF for $97.5 million.

Champps’ location is a piece of prime real estate. It is a large, two-floor restaurant space (Champps locations are all between 5,000 and 8,000 square feet, company officials said) located close to the future Wiehle-Reston East Metro and Reston Parkway.

Champps had occupied that location since Plaza America opened in 1995.

What would you like to see in the space? Tell us in the comments.

Is Hooters Coming to Reston?/Credit: Hooters

A bookstore. A locally owned restaurant. A really good bakery.

Those are some of the suggestions from Reston Now readers about what should go in the space formerly occupied by Champps at Plaza America.

How do you feel about chicken wings and waitresses in orange short-shorts?

The Reston rumor mill is abuzz with word that Hooters, the chain of sports bars with more than 400 locations in 28 countries, has checked out the space that has been empty since Champps abruptly closed in November. Hooters has locations nearby in Fairfax and Chantilly.

It’s not farfetched. The Plaza America space is large, expensive (read: chain friendly) and already laid out for a restaurant. There are thousands of office workers in walking or short-driving distance, who likely both appreciate watching SportsCenter at lunchtime as well as being waited on by Hooters Girls.

Here is what Hooters says are the best qualities about its servers:

Hooters Girls are the very essence of Hooters. Trained to excel in customer service, they provide the energy, charisma and engaging conversation that keep guests coming back. Much more than just a pretty face, Hooters girls have game. They’re intelligent and attentive – using their energy, experience and personalities to serve guests everywhere to live in the moment and take a break from the outside world.

Meanwhile, a Hooters spokesman tells Reston Now no lease has been signed — yet.

“We have no plans in Reston,” he said. “But we are definitely interested in opportunities in the area.”

champpsChampps Americana, the large sports bar and restaurant at Reston’s Plaza America, abruptly closed its doors on Wednesday.

“Due to unfortunate circumstances, we have had to make the hard decision to permanently close this location,” a sign posted on the door says. “Champps Reston has been around for 17 years and has formulated so very many unique bonds with the business and suburban community. For this we want to say thank you for supporting us for such a long period and we bid you farewell.”

A skeleton staff was already in place Thursday morning stripping sports memorabilia and flat screen TVs from the walls as a crew removed the outside sign. Management had no comment.

No word yet on what might be going into the very large corner space at Plaza America. Champps is a national chain with three other Virginia locations.

Reston is about to become a crowded sports bar area as Glory Days will open at Northpoint and World of Beer will open at Reston Town Center in 2014.
