Track Work to Cause Delays on the Silver, Orange and Blue Lines This Weekend

by RestonNow.com June 14, 2018 at 2:30 pm 8 Comments

Build some extra time into your plans if you’re planning to take the Orange, Silver or Blue line this weekend.

Trains on all three lines will travel 24 miles apart. Silver Line trains will run only between Wiehle-Reston East and Ballston, Blue Line trains will single track between Foggy Bottom and Arlington Cemetery and Orange line trains will single track between Foggy Bottom and Arlington Cemetery.

The service changes are necessary in order to allow crews to install cables and communications equipment on the Blue and Orange lines, according to the Washington Metropolitan Area Authority.

Customers should use Orange and Blue lines to complete their trip. At Ballston, customers should transfer between Silver and Orange line trains on the same platform.

What does it mean “this weekend”? Every freakin’ weekend!

  • Why do you bother?

This is not news. Let us know if there’s ever a weekend WITHOUT service interruptions.

Is it the case that every time single tracking is done on the shared Orange/ Silver/ Blue line, the Silver Line is shutdown in Ballston and the Orange line gets top billing? Do they ever mix it up? Does the Orange Line ever shut down in Ballston and force Orange Line riders to get on the Silver Line? Is it because I read RestonNow and not ViennaNow that I only hear about Silver Line riders getting the shaft?

From my experience, it’s only the Silver Line that terminates in Ballston and never the Orange Line. My guess is it has something to do with the fact that all the way at the other end of the lines, Orange heads up to New Carrollton while Silver follows the Blue. No sense having two lines going to the same place and no service at all to the other destinations. That said, I understand WMATA could run Orange trains from New Carrollton to downtown or Stadium Armory and turn them around again, allowing the Silver Line to run all the way through, but this is WMATA we’re talking about.

    Another Hudgins fiasco

By the way, trains will run 24 MINUTES apart not 24 miles apart. Please Reston Now, review what you write before publishing it. Of course, trains could be 24 miles apart after 24 minutes!
