A vocational school for entry-level healthcare fields could be coming soon to the Crossroads (1037 Sterling Road, Suite 101).

The town’s planning and zoning staff recommended placing several restrictions on the proposal to open a Divine Healthtech Institute prior to approval. Vocational schools require a specific exemption from the town to operate in this area.

Conditions include holding no classes before 8 a.m. or after 10 p.m. and allowing town officials to inspect the property during “reasonable hours.”

Staff maintains a level of concern with allowing multiple uses within one condominium suite from a general standpoint. In this specific case, staff believes the proposed use is similar enough to the existing use that any potential negative impacts could be mitigated by placing conditions on the approval,” according a the March 13 staff report.

If approved, the school would only be allowed to offer one class at a time in the 300-square-foot location. The condominium suite where the school would be located has a hodgepodge of uses, including two offices that are used for Nathan Travel and Cargo, a travel agency.

Rev. Leonard Chukwujiioke, a school administrator, said each class will have only five students. Weekend programs will be by appointment only. A morning and evening class will be offered on weekdays.

Most recently, the Herndon Town Council denied a plan to bring a mini-mart to the Crossroads last year. Plans for a barber shop were withdrawn after the town conditioned approval of the application with several requirements. The operation of a personal service business was approved last year.

The town’s Planning Commission will consider the plan at a 7 p.m. public hearing today (May 13).

It’s official: Herndon’s Metro Square development at 23 Silver Drive next to the planned Herndon Metro Station is now complete.

All units in the project, which includes four buildings with 64 total condo units, are move-in ready, according to Soledad Portilla, Stanley Martin Homes’ land acquisition manager.

Portilla told Reston Now that the company expects to be completely sold out next month.

The developer still needs to complete infrastructure improvements like installing a final layer of pavement on the roads, some pavers, final touches on pocket parts, and some sidewalks, Portilla said.

The owner of an upscale piano bar has reneged on plans to open an upscale piano bar in Herndon’s Junction Square neighborhood.

Risky Ricky’s planned to open last year at 700 Elden Street. But after waiting for two years as the builder completed the project, the owner says he recently decided to pull the plug on the project, which would have featured an upscale wine and piano bar.

“At a later stage, the developer still had no idea as to when the project will finish,” Rick Khosla, the owner, told Reston Now. He originally planned to open in September 2017 — a date that was later pushed to late 2018.

Khosla says the property did not come with any dedicated parking spots — which also prompted him to back off on his business plans. He says the cost of completing the space was also too excessive “to make the numbers work.” Khosla also hinted “animosity from local businesses” because of his decision to sell wine.

Earlier this month, artist Trisha Adams opened up a new art gallery at Junction Square. Work to get other businesses in motion is ongoing.

Risky Ricky’s is still on the market for a new location in Herndon or Reston. Khosla is planning to move back to Herndon after two years in Sterling and hopes to see projects like Junction Square succeed.

“Herndon is close to my heart,” he said.

Work is underway on CoreSite’s data center campus in Sunrise Technology Park.

So far, the company, which has data centers across the country, has built a 79,000-square-foot data center. A 50,000-square-foot addition to the center is planned to be complete in the second quarter of 2019, according to Carole Jorgensen, CoreSite’s vice president of investor relations and corporate communications.

Fairfax County Board of Supervisors approved the company’s request to expand its Reston campus last August. Currently, two facilities called VA1 and VA2 are operational in Reston.

The company acquired the 22-acre office park in November 2016 from Brookfield Office Properties. The $60 million deal positioned the company to expand its footprint in Reston, which was an attractive alternative to Ashburn due to tax incentives and better commuting options, according to the company’s website.

The campus also gives CoreSite’s customers direct access to leading public cloud on-ramps, Jorgensen said. The location is also well-positioned to Washington, D.C. and network access points along the Eastern seaboard that enable networks, cloud providers and businesses “to scale, improve performance, and reduce costs,” she said.

Once completed, CoreSite’s Reston campus will total around 1.3 million square feet.

A major vacancy is coming soon to Plaza America.

Large black and yellow signs now blanket Modell’s Sporting Goods (11680 Plaza America Drive), signaling the store’s closure after it lost its lease.

Signs read that a sale with “drastic reductions” is in effect.

A company representative for the family-operated chain, which offers athletic equipment, footwear and clothing, did not immediately return a request for comment from Reston Now.

The store’s last day of business is not known.

Several clients’ clothes are missing following what appears to be the abrupt closure of Reston Tailoring, a local business that has called Reston home for more than 30 years.

An associate for Just Cats Clinic, which neighbors Reston Tailoring at Lake Anne Plaza, told Reston Now that many people have been calling their business to track down their clothes, following Reston Tailoring’s disappearance over the weekend.

“We have no idea what happened,” the associate said.

Reston Now was unable to reach the owners, Berta and Wagner Cordova, after multiple attempts. The property owner of the building also did not respond to requests for comment. Reston Tailoring’s website also went down over the weekend.

The shop moved from Hunters Woods Village Center, its home since 1984, to Lake Anne in 2013.

The store in Lake Anne is empty and no signs indicate what may have happened. It is unclear if the closure is temporary or permanent.

What is known is that Reston Tailoring has been woven into the fabric of the Reston community, serving three generations of customers.

A 58-year-old children’s entertainer is facing 10 felony counts of possession of child pornography.

Police believe Steven Rossi, who goes by the stage name “Mr. Knick Knack,” had numerous files containing illicit images. He was arrested on April 30 and is scheduled to appear in court on June 11.

Rossi performed regularly at Reston Town Center, presenting “unique, heart-centered music for kids and their grown-ups.”

Investigators do not believe that Rossi had contact with the children in the images.

Anyone with additional information is encouraged to contact the Fairfax County Police Department’s Major Crimes Bureau at 703-246-7800.

The news comes one day after police released information that a former Herndon High School teacher faced 20 new charges of child pornography.

The Fairfax County Planning Commission unanimously approved Prince Towne LLC’s plans to replace four single-family homes near West Ox Road with nine single-family homes Wednesday night.

The plan for the 4.9-acre site, which is on the north side of West Ox Road and east of Fairfax County Parkway, heads to the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors for a vote in the coming weeks.

Hunter Mill District Planning Commissioner John Carter said several “magical” improvements helped address critical stormwater management and drainage issues on the site.

Carter said the county worked with the applicant to reduce setbacks on the western property line, preserve more trees, and install an underground stormwater management system.

The community has struggled with poor drainage systems in the past, with most water pooling to the center of the community.

The commission also worked with the applicant to tweak elements like the relocation of a driveway by 18 feet and the deletion of a retaining wall.

“What we’ve done in the last six weeks is to work on the layout,” Carter said.

The applicant also plans to install a new street — Prince Towne Court — that will intersect with West Ox Road.

A final vote by the Board of Supervisors has not been scheduled yet.

During the Wednesday meeting, the commission once again deferred a decision on a plan to remove 215,000 square feet of office space from Reston Heights (11830 Sunrise Valley Drive). A dispute about easement access with neighboring property owners, among other issues, stalled the vote.

Carter said the commission needed more time to resolve several issues. A vote is scheduled for May 22.
