Reston’s latest Pet of the Week is Buddy, a 4-year-old border collie mix who’s in need of a home after his owner passed away.

Here’s what Buddy’s friends from NOVA Pets Alive! have to say about him:

Introducing, Buddy!

Buddy is 4 years old and 65 pounds. Sadly, his owner passed away and he’s now in search of a new, loving home.

Buddy is such an amazing dog! He’s super smart, housebroken, crate-trained, walks well on a leash, is friendly with other dogs and LOVES every person he meets. His foster mom is an avid runner, and he has been accompanying her on her morning runs. He really seems to like getting fresh air, jogging and taking in the scenery!

If you’re looking for a social, active, happy dog to add to your family, look no further than Buddy!

Are you and Buddy the perfect match?

Mask wearing bunny (photo by robinreston)

Months after Virginia started lifting its mask restrictions, the once-ubiquitous face masks that were a defining symbol of the COVID-19 pandemic have started becoming more scarce. But with the delta variant starting to cause a COVID-19 resurgence, some are saying masks in public should make a comeback, even for people who have been fully vaccinated.

The delta variant now accounts for 83% of new COVID-19 cases reported in the U.S., the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimated earlier this week. The delta variant is more contagious than other strands of COVID-19 and could potentially have more severe symptoms.

In official channels, mask requirements have continued to ease up. The Commonwealth is set to let a statewide mandate on indoor mask wearing in schools expire on Sunday (July 25), though the state guidance remains that teachers, students and staff should still wear their masks indoors.

While the virus now appears to be almost exclusively spreading among unvaccinated people, some fully vaccinated people have continued wearing masks for a variety of reasons, from a desire to fend off other illnesses or to protect young children and other people unable to get a vaccine to concern about being judged.

Have you stayed in the habit of wearing a face mask, or does it depend on the setting?

Meet Reston’s latest Pet of the Week, Honey. Honey is an expert lap warmer, and she often greets her humans with a happy chirp. She’s looking for a quiet home with no cats, dogs or kids.

Here’s what else Honey’s friends at Fancy Cats Rescue Team had to say about her:

If you’re looking for a calm, low-maintenance kitty who is an expert lap warmer, Honey may be the perfect one for you!

Honey instantly captivates with her beautiful, dilute tortie colors and markings. She is an easygoing kitty with excellent house manners. Honey craves companionship and loves to be where her people are. She often greets with a happy chirp. Her favorite pastime is curling up on your lap — she will stay there for hours if you let her! She enjoys a warm sunny spot to catch a snooze and watching wildlife outside as most cats do.

Honey is a great nighttime guardian and likes to snuggle up next to you in bed. It makes her sad if she is not allowed to. She has a little bit of a playful side on occasion — she likes laser lights, catnip toys, cat dancer toys and puff balls. Honey adores treats. She happily purrs while eating her favorites — so cute!

There are some specific preferences Honey wants you to know about. She is a bit of a “hands-off” kitty. She is not a fan of being picked up, brushed or being pet a lot. She will give a warning meow to let you know her limits and will follow with a swat or hiss if her warning isn’t listened to — classic ‘tortitude.’ Honey prefers to be the queen of her castle, she needs to go to a quieter home with no cats, dogs or young children.

Consider giving Honey the loving, forever home she has been waiting for. She is a sweet, quiet and mellow kitty who would love to keep you company for years to come.

More photos of Honey can be found on Instagram using the hashtag #honeyFCDRT.

Meet Reston’s newest Pet of the Week, Zippy Zeus. This playful boy has been treated for heartworms and is ready to find his forever family.

Here’s what his friends at Safe Haven Puppy Rescue have to say about him:

Look at this gorgeous boy Zeus! He is just the sweetest, too! He is 56 pounds and 3.5 years old, and everyone falls in love with him when they meet him.

When he came to us, he was unfortunately heartworm positive. We have treated him, and he has done well but does have a bit of a cough at the time. We had him checked out at the cardiologist (just to be sure), and they could not find anything of concern so his new family needs to know he may have a lingering cough. However, it certainly does not slow this guy down — just look at him enjoying the pool!

We need to find his forever family. We’re confident he will make his adopters a terrific companion. This beautiful guy is a nice blend of friendly affection and normal puppy playfulness and will bring lots of love to any home.

This week’s Pet of the Week is Lucy, a suspected part Maine Coon who loves bonding with people.

Here’s what her friends at Fancy Cats Rescue Team had to say about her:

Lucy is a sweet girl who likes to purr. She’s a longhair domestic who was rescued out of a box at 7 weeks old. She is now 3 years and 3 months old and weighs in at 9 pounds. Because of her size, markings and a meow that is often more of a “trill” than meow, she may be part Maine Coon. She’s been raised in an adult household, purely indoors, and has not been around other animals very much. I’ve been told she is timid around other fur babies in these situations.

She loves people bonding time and likes to lay right next to her person on the couch or in bed at night. She’s a good sleeper and won’t wake you at night. She’s very happy to lay on the foot of the bed and just know you are close by. She’s a quiet girl other than when she hasn’t seen her person for hours or if she’s craving treats. She will do figure eights around your legs, purr loudly and talk to you in both situations. You can’t help but laugh and scratch her.

Her favorite toy is a cat fishing pole, and she loves to chase the red light from a laser pointer. She runs and slides on hard floors because of the fluffy hair on her paws! She does need semi-regular combing of her hair and benefits from sanitary trims under her tail. She had a “lion cut” a few weeks ago and loved it, thanking mom for how much cooler she felt and reducing hairballs in her tummy!

She may be a little anxious while adjusting to new people and a new living situation but rest assured it will pass.

Meet Reston’s latest Pet of the Week, Shirley, a sweet 6-year-old collie who’s had a tough past and is looking for a caring home.

Here’s what her friends at Collie Rescue, Inc. have to say about her:

Shirley is a sweet 6-year-old collie girl with beautiful sable coat. Shirley has been through quite the ordeal and deserves the most wonderful home we can find for her!

At her previous home, she was neglected and not well-cared for. She was living outside and in filth. Despite her rough living conditions, she is luckily still in good health and we’ve taken her into our rescue. She received a nice grooming and is currently recouping from being spayed. She will be living with one of our foster families until we can find her a permanent home.

Shirley is a very sweet, timid dog will need a gentle home and family to care for her. She deserves the very best!

Nationally, 47 million Americans are expected to travel this weekend, many of them by car, according to Travel and Leisure. It’s an estimate in line with pre-pandemic figures.

Are you planning to head out-of-town this weekend? How are you planning on traveling? List your mode-of-choice in the comments if it’s not a plane or car.
