July 4 Pool Party — Reston Association is hosting a pool party July 4, noon to 4 p.m. at Lake Newport Pool.  There will be a DJ, contests and prizes. Pizza, popcorn and cotton candy will be available for purchase. This program is cancelled in the event of rain.

Donating To Flood Victims — Members of the Fairfax County Police Motorcycle Squad are collecting supplies for victims of the recent floods in West Virginia. Items they need: diapers, pet food, toiletries, canned food, and cleaning supplies. [FCPD]

Torres Released From Jail — Former Fairfax County Police officer Adam Torres, who pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the death of an unarmed man in Springfield in 2013, left Fairfax County Jail on Wednesday. Torres had been sentenced to one year in jail, but was granted time served since he had been incarcerated for 10 months already. [WTOP]

SLHS Records Fall at Track Nationals — South Lakes High School runners broke two school records and tied an 18-year mark last weekend at the New Balance Outdoor Nationals track and field meet in North Carolina. Junior Devyn Jones ran a 14.52 in the preliminaries of the 100 meter hurdles, breaking her own mark set last month. The 4×800 meter relay team of Sophie Halkett, Sarah Wolfe, Olivia Beckner and Golden Kumi-Darfour broke the school record they set in May with a 9:15.79 for 12th place in the Championship Division.

Chat About Next Safety Surge — The second of Metro’s Safety Surges begins next week. The next surge (June 18 to July 3) will affect Orange, Blue and Silver Line customers with a line segment shutdown between Eastern Market & Minnesota Avenue/Benning Road, and no Blue Line service between Arlington Cemetery and Rosslyn. Gender Protection Addition Causes Ire At FCPS Board Meeting — Security had to escort several audience members out of the Fairfax County School Board meeting Thursday night after a discussion to amend FCPS’ Student Rights and Responsibilities policy to align the student handbook with the district’s nondiscrimination policy. Board discussion also turned heated when several members wanted to postpone the vote until June 30. That motion failed and the change to the policy passed. [Washington Post]

Biking On Track During  SafeTrack — Area transportation officials say the number of people biking to work last week was up there with “Bike to Work Day.” Double the usual number of riders were counted last Monday, the first day of SafeTrack work on the Blue, Orange and Silver Lines. [WJLA]

Tour the New North County Governmental Center — The public is invited to the grand opening of the North County Governmental Center (1801 Cameron Glen Dr.) on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The new facility, completed last year, houses the Fairfax County Police Reston District Station, as well as the Hunter Mill Supervisors office. In addition to tours there will be  members of the K-9 unit; a landing of the police helicopter; motorcycle squad demonstrations and more family fun.
