Red's TableRed’s Table, the locally owned restaurant slated to open soon at South Lakes Village Center, is still busy working towards an opening this winter.

The restaurant, located in the former Lakeside Inn space, is an ambitious offering from Ryan, Pat and Matt Tracy, who grew up in Reston. The brothers own several Five Guys franchises, but this will be their first foray into sit-down dining.

Crews have been busy for months knocking the Lakeside Inn space down to the studs to renovate the Red’s Table space.

According to a craigslist help wanted ad, the Tracys have hired chef Adam Stein to oversee the kitchen. Stein formerly worked at D.C.’s The Queen Vic and at Alexandria’s Light Horse Tavern, which is owned by the Tracys’ cousin.

The posting also said the restaurant is hoping for a mid-March opening. Ryan Tracy had said last fall that he hoped to open in late January or early February.

But the owners still have big plans for good food and drinks at the new Reston spot. If the help wanted ad is any indication, expect excellent baked goods, sustainable fish, tattoos and a laid-back atmosphere:

Red’s Table is hiring for one Kick-Ass Baker/Pastry Chef to oversee our bread program and desserts. Savory experience is a plus, as this person will function in a hybrid position of AM Sous as well. (Mostly receiving and opening the doors for staff.) Five days a week with two consecutive days off. Tattoos and piercings are a bonus, but not required. We are hoping to open in the later half of March and are looking for people to help build our team. We will be open for Lunch and Dinner as well as Brunch on the weekends. Red’s will be a scratch kitchen paying close attention to region and seasonality. We will have our own bread program as well as a range of scratch pies and cakes. Focus will be on our large raw bar offerings as well as sustainable finfish and local proteins.

Chef Adam Stein is looking for strong, self-starters with experience who either wants to take a step up or are looking for a change of pace. No yellers, screamers, or plate throwers need apply. A warm, family atmosphere is the aim. If you’re looking for a serious, but relaxed, atmosphere to contribute to a hard working team, then please submit a Brief Cover Letter and Resume to Chef Adam Stein at the email above. Thanks!

Lakeside Gallery/Fastframe will close its doors at South Lakes Village Center on Sept. 30. The store has been there for more than 25 years.

Owner Leslie Hemsworth says the store will reopen on Oct. 1 at 11529 Sunrise Valley Dr. The new store, located on the second floor at the Sunrise Valley Convenience Center, will be smaller, but will feature a bright studio space for art classes, painting birthday parties and other special events, she said.

The new store will be renamed Art Frame Solutions. In addition to classes, the store offers custom framing, art restoration, and memorabilia and flag framing

Looking for a bargain? Most of the inventory at the current store has been moved over to the new location, but some prints and smaller picture frames are deeply discounted through Sept. 30 at the current store.

Red's TableThe owners of Red’s Table, the restaurant that will go into the South Lakes Village Center space formerly occupied by the Lakeside Inn, hope to begin construction on the new place in August.

The waterfront space at South Lakes Village Center has been vacant since the Lakeside Inn closed last October after 22 years. Construction crews gutted the space about two months ago.

Ryan Tracy — a Red’s Table owner, along with his brothers Matt and Pat — said the Fairfax County permitting process is taking longer than anticipated.

“We hope to start construction in the month of August,” he said. “If that happens, we hope to be open by November/December.”

The Tracy brothers are planning “American cuisine with fresh, local products, oysters, good sandwiches, as well as local craft beer and local wines,” Ryan Tracy said earlier this year. There will be an open kitchen and additional outdoor seating, as well as floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Lake Thoreau.

Renovating the former Lakeside Inn space

More than six months after the Lakeside Inn closed its doors at Reston’s South Lakes Village Center, renovations for future tenant Red’s Table have finally begun.

Lakeside Inn left the space in October 2013 after 22 years as a popular, but slightly worn-around-the-edges, watering hole.

The space is currently being gutted, and Red’s Table owners Ryan, Pat and Matt Tracy have ambitious plans for their business.

The Tracy brothers, all of whom grew up in Reston, are planning an open space with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Lake Thoreau. The closed-off bar area will be gone. The new restaurant will have an Aerican Regional Cuisine menu, an open kitchen and two outdoor patios, Ryan Tracy said.

“The place will look totally different than before,” Ryan Tracy said in a previous interview with Reston Now.  “It will have a rustic feel, taking advantage of its space by the lake. I think it will be a huge hit. People can sit out on the lake and really enjoy it.”

Tracy say he is planning to open later in 2014.

CVS will expand into former Footsteps space.

The CVS store at South Lakes Village Center will expand into the empty retail space next door.

The empty storefront at 11160-H South Lakes has been vacant since Footsteps running store left in March of 2013.

Footsteps owner Paul Zink closed the popular running store last year after 17 years at the Reston location. He said it was too hard for a small business owner to stay in business at South Lakes, which had become mostly chains and restaurants.

CVS has filed permits for remodeling. No completion date has been set.

Reston lost a longstanding business when Lakeside Inn — a popular south Reston watering hole — shut its doors at South Lake Village Center last October after 22 years.

The Tracy brothers, who were raised nearby, saw the closing as an opportunity. Ryan Tracy and his brothers Pat and Matt, have signed a lease to open a more upscale tavern and restaurant that they hope to name “Red’s Table” after their red-haired grandfather.

The brothers own seven Five Guys franchises in Florida but had been looking for a place to open a full-service place nearby. Their parents Christine Baker, who recently retired from teaching at Buzz Aldrin Elementary, and Tom Tracy, are investors. Cousin John Jarecki, who operates The Light Horse Restaurant in Old Town Alexandria, will assist.

Ryan Tracy, a 2002 South Lakes High School graduate, says they are gutting the former Lakeside Inn space at  down to the studs. Gone is the closed-off bar area. In its place will be an open kitchen and an expansive room with floor-to-ceiling windows for views of Lake Thoreau. The outdoor patio will stay, and Ryan Tracy said there are plans to add an additional patio.

“The place will look totally different than before,” he said. “It will have a rustic feel, taking advantage of its space by the lake. I think it will be a huge hit. People can sit out on the lake and really enjoy it.”

The menu is still a work in progress, he said. They are envisioning “American cuisine with fresh, local products, oysters, good sandwiches, as well as local craft beer and local wines,” he said.

Tracy said he hopes Red’s Table will be open by late summer or early fall.

Vacancy at 11160 South Lakes Drive

From time to time, Reston Now checks in on some of Reston’s vacant commercial properties and asks the community “What do YOU think should open here?”

This week, we are checking in on the spot at 11160 South Lakes Dr., which used to house Footsteps. The athletic store closed last March after the owner — who had been in the space for more than 20 years — said rent was too high and that South Lakes Village Center had become mainly focused on restaurants.

What would you like to see in this spot next to a CVS? Tell us in the comments.
