Within the last two months, two businesses in North Point Village Center — Great China and Jerry’s Subs and Pizza — abruptly closed.

Now, a new bagel cafe is planned in the space vacated by Great China (1484 North Point Village Center).

The county approved a permit for Bobby’s Bagel Cafe in the village center. Reston Now was unable to reach the owner for more information. The village center’s property manager did not immediately return a request for comment.

Jerry’s Subs and Pizza in North Point Village Center appears to have closed.

The restaurant’s signage was removed late last week.

Jerry’s was located at 1432 North Point Village Center. The Reston location reopened in the center in June after a fire forced the business to close in January.

No other information was immediately available.

The village center has several other vacancies. Great China closed in early September. A building permit indicates a new restaurant is expected to replace the Chinese restaurant.

Mathnasium, a learning center that offers customized math tutoring, officially opened its doors in North Point Village Center today (Monday).

Assessments for placement begin this week at the Reston location (1424 North Point Village Center). The business will be open for instructional hours on October 15.

For now, the business is open for assessments from Monday through Thursday from 3-8 p.m and on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. No testing is offered on Sunday or Friday.

To celebrate its opening, Mathnasium has launched a grand opening sweepstakes — which offers up a free six-month membership to the Reston location.

Mathnasium also has a location in Herndon (2485 Centreville Road).

Great China appears to have closed its doors for good at North Point Village Center.

The restaurant had its windows papered last week, according to a reader-submitted photo. As of today (Sept. 9), the sign is now gone at the restaurant’s spot at 1484 North Point Village Center.

The restaurant is no longer listed in the shopping center’s directory.

A building permit indicates that the address will be home to a new restaurant.

As fall descends on the region, North Point Village Center is hosting a fall kick-off event next month.

The event, which is set for September 7 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at North Point Village Center, will include fun, food and prizes.

A guest appearance  is scheduled between noon at 2 p.m. — although details have not been released yet.

The kick-off event will also include an obstacle course, moon bounce, and other games.

The event is free and open to all. The village center is located at 1452 North Point Village Center.

A small fire broke out on the roof of a business in North Point Village Center (1452 Reston Parkway) yesterday (Wednesday).

The Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department contained the fire, which broke out around 5:30 p.m. that day.

Two medic units were dispatched to the scene, but no injuries were reported.

The fire happened on the roof line of the former Boston Market, which closed last month.

No other information about the incident was immediately available.  The cause of the incident has not yet been determined.

Boston Market in North Point Village Center has officially closed.

A company spokesperson told Reston Now that the restaurant, which is known for its takeout rotisserie chicken, had its last day of business on Sunday, July 7.

The closure comes as nearly 10 percent of Boston Market locations across the country shutter, including the Sterling location in Cascades Marketplace.

“We must take steps to ensure our operational structure will support long-term sustainability,” wrote CEO Frances Allen in a letter. “Part of that effort involves continuously analyzing our geographic footprint and real estate portfolio to assess the ongoing viability of locations.”

The next closest Boston Market is in Fairfax at 13059 Lee Jackson Memorial Highway.

Jerry’s Subs & Pizza in North Point Village Center reopened this month after a fire forced the business to close in January.

The manager of the Reston location said reopening took some time because of construction and replacements required for kitchen hoods.

“We’re excited to be open. Business has been good so far,” the manager told Reston Now.

The fast-casual cheesesteak, sub sandwich and pizza franchise has more than two dozen locations in Maryland, Virginia and Delaware, according to its website. 

Apple is bringing the beats to its Reston Town Center store tomorrow.

People can sign up to explore how to make beats in GarageBand, a digital audio workstation, on iPads. Producer Swizz Beatz and “Apple Creatives” will show participants how to create their own vibes, ranging from hip-hop to EDM to  R&B beats.

People can bring their own iPads or have one provided to them.

The event runs from 3-4:40 p.m. at 11949 Market Street.

Tomorrow (March 23)

• All Gardeners’ Meeting (10 a.m.-noon) — All users of community garden plots in Reston can attend the annual All Gardeners’ meeting at the Reston Association’s headquarters. The meeting will include discussions on soil management, gardening with return on investments and gardening tips.
• Dog Tales (10:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m.) — Kids ages 5 to 12 can read to a trained therapy dog for 15-minute sessions at the Herndon Fortnightly Library. Kids can bring their own books or choose one from the library.
• Fundamentals of Figure Drawing (2:30-4:30 p.m.) — Participants can pay $200 for an eight-week drawing at ArtSpace Herndon. This week’s session, taught by John Koebert,  will focus on human figure drawing using a live model in the studio.

Sunday (March 24)

• Walk or run (8 a.m.) — The Reston Runners will go on a 3- and 6-mile walk and a 10-mile run. The group will meet at North Point Village Center.
• History of World War II (2-4 p.m.) — Harry Butowsky from George Mason University will present the second part of his six-part lecture series at the Reston Regional Library.

Most of the new developments around town profiled by Reston Then and Now are village centers with new residents cropping up around them over time, but North Point Village Center is a little different.

Fairfax County’s Historic Imagery Viewer shows how the village grew first with the center being placed later at it’s heart — filling in Reston’s northern frontier.

Not including the Reston Town Center, North Point was the last of Reston’s village centers. In the 1960s, while the other villages were under construction, North Point was a sweeping expanse of untamed wilderness.

Construction on North Point Village started in 1982, and in 1993 the North Point Village Center opened to the public.

The area has changed very little from overhead since 2002, but there’s plenty of turnover on the ground. In December Koko FitClub closed, and a new Thai restaurant opened two months later down the street.

A Reston Now poll earlier this year ranked North Point Village Center as Reston’s second favorite, behind Lake Anne.

Now that spring has finally arrived, warmer weather will invite locals outside to mill around Reston’s many shopping areas.

While Reston has an abundance of stores at Plaza America, Reston Town Center and the Spectrum, one of Reston’s unique design elements lies in its mix of residential and retail at its five village centers.

The first one — the Lake Anne Village Center — looks almost the same today as it did in 1976.

Many of the other village centers, though, are undergoing transformations, including South Lakes and Tall Oaks.

The Hunters Woods Village Center, which saw most of its original buildings demolished and replaced with more modern retail in the 1990s, is on a 2017 list of potential spots for new residential development put together by the Fairfax County Department of Planning and Zoning.

Meanwhile, North Point Village Center has seen retailers and businesses leave and open. Most recently, a Thai restaurant opened at the village center.

Reston Now wants to know if there is a certain village center you frequently visit or really love going to.

Finn Thai Restaurant and Bar officially opened in the North Point Village Center on Presidents’ Day (Feb. 18).

Finn Thai fills the former Payless spot at 1466 North Point Village Center. The spot has been empty since the discounted footwear retailer left in 2017.

The menu includes curry dishes, noodles, fried rice and vegetarian selections, along with a kid’s menu and wine selection. According to the restaurant’s Facebook page, selected steaks are half-priced on Mondays just for the Reston location.

Finn Thai has two other restaurants — one in Purcellville and the second one in Martinsburg, West Virginia.

BB&T’s signs and outdoor ATM machines are gone at its former branch spot in Reston Town Center.

A sign on the door at 1864 Explorer Street say that “this financial center is closed,” encouraging people to go to the BB&T branch and ATM at 1490 North Point Village Center.

Locals looking for the closest location can find it at 230 Herndon Parkway.

Reston Now has not heard back yet from BB&T as to why and when the branch closed.

Building permits from CH Realty indicate that the vacant spot is set to undergo interior alterations.

Finn Thai Restaurant and Bar is planning to open soon in the North Point Village Center.

An employee told Reston Now that the restaurant is almost finished with the inspections process. If everything goes as planned, the restaurant could open as soon as the middle of next week — right around Valentine’s Day.

An exact date, though, has not been set yet.

The Reston opening will mark the third Finn Thai restaurant. Currently, one location is in Purcellville and a second one is in Martinsburg, West Virginia.

Finn Thai will fill the vacant spot at 1466 North Point Village Center, which has been empty since Payless left in 2017.
