The Reston-Herndon area’s newest exercise studio opened its doors on Wednesday. Pure Barre Reston, part of a nationwide franchise of barre exercise studios, is now offering classes at 12975 Highland Crossing Dr., in the Woodland Park Shopping Center in Herndon.

Pure Barre is offering a new client special: a month of unlimited classes for $100. Drop-in classes are $25. Other series rates are available on the Pure Barre Reston website. Classes are offered seven days a week. Check out the Reston location’s schedule on the website.

Pure Barre offers classes mainly at a ballet barre, where students use small muscle movement to get a total body workout “that lifts your seat, tones your thighs, and burns fat in record-breaking time,” says the Pure Barre website.

“It is an intelligent exercise and utilizes the ballet barre to perform small isometric movements in order to create long, lean muscle without bulk,” says Pure Barre.

Pure Barre, which already has Fairfax studio, will soon be opening locations in Ashburn and Vienna.

fcps logoFairfax County Public Schools is collecting school supplies in order to ensure every student is prepared for the upcoming school year.

Collect for Kids is a coordinated school supply drive to benefit needy FCPS students. The drive will provide school supplies for the 2015-16 school year for students who qualify for free and reduced-price meals. Approximately 52,000 FCPS students receive free and reduced-price meals, FCPS says.

The drive, which will concentrate on cash, backpacks and calculators, will run through Sept. 4.

Citizens can support the students in one of three ways:

Cash donations: By partnering with Office Depot, Kitz for Kids, and Walmart, Collect for Kids purchases school supplies in bulk, translating a $1 donation into $3 worth of school supplies. A $10 donation can fill a backpack with FCPS-approved supplies. Donations are accepted online.

Backpack donations: Donations of new backpacks can be brought to any Apple FCU or Northwest FCU branch, or to any affiliated organization. Visit Apple FCU or Northwest FCU for branch locations. There is always a need for additional large backpacks for high school students, says FCPS.

Calculator donations: Calculators, which will help support students in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) subjects, can be donated to Apple FCU or any partnered not-for-profit organization. The Collect for Kids website lists partners.

Preferred models are the TI 30Xa Solar School Edition or TI-84 Series calculators, but other models may be donated.

The Fairfax County Planning Commission has recommended for approval a parking lot expansion for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in north Reston.

The church — which had recently looked into building a new facility elsewhere in Reston — seeks to add 39 parking spaces to its existing 23-year-old site at 1515 Poplar Grove Dr. The parking capacity will increase from 121 to 160 spots, planning documents show.

The site is adjacent to residential town houses, Armstrong Elementary School, a public elementary school, a power substation and a park authority-owned property.

Residents of adjacent cluster Birchfield Woods were unhappy with a 2014 proposal that would take up additional space and remove additional trees. The plan has since been amended to its current form.

Church officials told zoning staff they looked into a parking agreement with Armstrong Elementary as a possible alternative to expansion.

The church said it had pursued parking agreements with public schools previously.

“The church is self-insured. Public schools does not accept that form of insurance,” Rinker Design, the firm hired by the church to do the expansion told county staff in a letter. “The church also has concerns about the safety of families crossing Lake Newport Road. It is a busy street. The church does not consider this a feasible option.”

“The church feels that additional parking is needed to meet the needs of their congregation, to be a good neighbor to the adjacent townhouse residents, and to provide parking with a safe access to the church. There will be no changes to the existing building or current use.”

Some of the development conditions:

  • The church must submit a tree preservation plan and narrative for the site and the site will include a tree preservation fence.
  • Supplemental landscaping is proposed to include shrubs, 51 evergreen trees and nine deciduous trees. Interior parking lot landscaping is proposed to include six additional trees.
  • Stormwater quality will be addressed through permeable pavement, Filterra and storm filter structures.
  • The county is permitting a waiver of a barrier requirement between the church and the surrounding areas because a 25-foot vegetative barrier already exists.

The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors will hold a public hearing to give final approval to the expansion on July 28.

Reston Bike Shepherd seeks to reunite bicycles and owners/Courtesy Reston Bike ShepherdA Reston mom is hoping social media will reunite kids with their stolen bikes.

Wendy Cook is the founder of Reston Bike Shepherd, a Facebook group where residents can post pictures of bikes without apparent owners around Reston. Many of those bikes are stolen and abandoned on the trails.

Cooks says she got the idea last summer, when her son’s bicycle — a birthday present — was stolen off the front porch of their home.

“Shortly after his bike was stolen, we saw two kids walking through the backyards with a bike,” she said. “My son called to them and they dropped it and ran. I ran after them but could not catch up to them. We were able to return that bike to our neighbor’s son.”

Alas, she still has not found her son’s bicycle.

Cook said she is always seeing abandoned and stolen bicycles on Reston’s paths.

“I photographed and posted them. Then I called the police to come retrieve it and file a report,” she said. “People of Reston are finding stolen bikes ALL the time. The are being tossed into dumpsters, streams and woods. These bikes are cherished gifts from grandparents and parents and have great sentimental value to our children.”

Cook says she hopes people will be more aware of the issue and will photograph potentially stolen bikes, share them on Reston Bike Shepherd and also file a police report.

“I also want to let people know that the bikes are not safe in your yard or garage unless locked up,” she said. “Bikes have been stolen from unlocked garages, from backyard sheds and right off front porches in broad daylight. The more locks you have, the better. Also, write down your serial number!”

Cook offers these tips if your bicycle is stolen:

  • File a police report as soon as possible, police can connect bike to owner via serial number.
  • Contact your insurance company.
  • Post a photo of your bike on Reston Bike Shepherd, with description, and location etc.
  • Alert your friends on Facebook and Twitter and Instagram.
  • Make posters and put them up at the Reston pools, Community Center, schools, post office etc.
  • Put a STOLEN BIKE notice up on Craigslist.org.

The Reston Farm Market & Country Store is now open under new management, which hopes to return the stand at Route 7 and Baron Cameron Avenue to its good, old days.

The market, first opened in 1976, enjoyed a brisk business until a few years ago, particularly in fall, when it offered pumpkins and kids activities.

Managers Lexi and Justin Stalcup have brought in a kid-sized train, a moon bounce and a potbellied pig named Foxy to appeal to shoppers with children.

The market is also selling fresh flowers and plants, locally grown produce and other farm stand items.

The market, located at 10800 Baron Cameron Ave., is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. Justin Stalcup said he hopes they will stay open year-round.
