Police escorted buses at RTC/Credit: LoveRunAndPray via TwitterSeveral Reston Now readers noticed about nine tour buses with a police escort traveling through Reston and making a slow pass through the Reston Town Center Tuesday at about noon.

Was it a presidential candidate? Visiting dignitary? Rock star and entourage?

None of the above.

The bus brigade was merely the NAIOP Commercial Real Estate Development Association’s annual Northern Virginia bus tour, RTC officials said. The police presence was to keep everyone together.

The NAIOP bus tour gathers together hundreds of commercial real estate brokers, developers and other interested parties to check out buildings and markets in Fairfax and Loudoun counties.

Reston Town Center, of course, is a hot spot for Northern Virginia commercial real estate. RTC officials say the center’s office space is 100-percent leased.

Car suspected in tire thefts/FCPDFairfax County Police say that there have been a series of thefts from American-made cars and trucks in Herndon, Chantilly, Fairfax and Vienna areas in the past four months.

Since February, there have been 10 incidents of tires and wheels stolen from 11 GMC or Chevrolet model vehicles, police said. The majority of cases occurred within the Fair Oaks police district but three cases were from the Reston, McLean and Sully districts (one each).

Detectives of the Criminal Investigations Section believe these cases are related and have determined the thieves are targeting SUVs, large body trucks and Corvettes manufactured by General Motors.

The suspects appear to be traveling along the Fairfax County Parkway to reach the targeted areas. It appears the majority of thefts are taking place between Sunday and Tuesday and between 2 a.m. to 4:30 a.m. In all cases, the vehicles were parked outside close to the home, either in the driveway or in the street

Here is where thefts have occurred:

Monday, February 1: 8200 block of Madrillon Estates Drive, Vienna; 2010 Chevrolet Corvette

Saturday, February 13: 4800 block of Autumn Glory Way, Chantilly; 2014 GMC Denali 1500

Wednesday, February 17: 2200 block of Stirrup Iron Lane, Reston; 2013 GMC Sierra

Detectives have also released photos of a vehicle they believe to be involved in the thefts (See above). The vehicle was seen on April 3 in the 12800 block of Shadow Oak Lane in Fairfax around the time of the theft that occurred in that location. The vehicle appears to be a silver 2011 to 2015 Ford Explorer SUV.

Police are encouraging residents who own a GM manufactured vehicle to park in a well-lit area and immediately report any suspicious noise, persons or vehicles to police. Wiehle Avenue and Sunset Hills Road/FCPDFairfax County Police said they issued 30 citations around the Wiehle-Reston East Metro Station Wednesday morning as part of their “Street Smart” pedestrian and bike safety campaign.

Fairfax County Police Department have teamed with “Street Smart,” an annual public education campaign, to promote traffic safety for pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists through education, enforcement and awareness.

In weeks prior to the special enforcement event, the Street Smart team was on foot around the Wiehle-Reston Metro station. Officers wore bright yellow shirts and handed out educational materials while wearing billboards.

On Wednesday, a large traffic sign was placed near the metro station to alert that special enforcement efforts were taking place. Officers then conducted special, high-visibility enforcement in the areas surrounding multiple pedestrian control devices (e.g. crosswalks and electronic signs).

Fairfax County Police Officers observed and cited 30 traffic safety violations for illegal actions that included failing to yield right-of-way to pedestrians legally crossing; pedestrians crossing against signal; turning right on red where posted prohibited; and illegally stopping on roadways and in travel lanes to discharge passengers. and more

Police said citations were issued to both pedestrians and motorists.

Crash at South Lakes and Colt's Neck

The Fairfax County Police have released a map that outlines all 1,874 reported crashes involving youth drivers in 2015.

Said police: “Each dot has its own sad story; from parking lot fender benders to crashes with property damage, vehicle damage, personal injury and death.”

The purpose of showing the stats in a graphic (see below) is part of a police campaign to encourage safe teen driving as summer approaches.

Consider these topics, police say:

Driving sober (free from alcohol and/or drugs): Police say prevention is key and impairment begins with the first drink. Besides that, it is  unlawful for anyone under 21 to operate any motor vehicle after illegally consuming alcohol. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), car crashes are the leading cause of death for teens, and about a quarter of those crashes involve an underage drinking driver. NHTSA also reports that kids who start drinking young are seven times more likely to be in an alcohol-related crash.

Driving in inclement conditions (e.g. rain, fog, snow): Talk about safe speeds for weather conditions, driving on ice and other weather conditions.

Vehicle equipment safety: Operable windshield wipers, horn, brakes, lighting are just examples of a few considerations when keeping a vehicle functioning, safe, and legal while increasing safety for everyone on our roadways, police said.

Distracted driving: Texting and driving is illegal in Virginia and most other states now, and that mobile phones or other devices may be illegal to use period depending on your age. Distracted driving is not only texting, it is talking to passengers, operating a radio or GPS, doing makeup or hair…it is any behavior that detracts from the primary function of driving.

Seatbelt use: Use them every time.

Fairfax County Police Be careful out there.

Fairfax County Police will be conducting a Sobriety Checkpoint on Saturday, April 23 in the Reston District from 11 p.m. to 2 a.m. (Sunday). Police do not give advance notice of the exact checkpoint location.

The Reston District is 56 square miles. It includes Reston, along with Great Falls, and parts of Vienna, Oak Hill and Herndon.

The Fairfax County Police Department puts up occasional sobriety checkpoints to make sure drivers are not drinking alcohol and getting behind the wheel.

Along with publicity and awareness, checkpoints have proven to be effective in the fight against drunk driving, police say.
