It sought out the space in part to support a commercialization platform it is developing in collaboration with Freddie Mac and to bring more of its workers closer together in Reston. Raise for Fairfax County School Board? — The FCPS school board will vote in April on raising board member salaries from $20,000 to $35,000. The county Board of Supervisors also recently voted to increase their pay from $75,000 to $90,000 annually. [Washington Post]

Sculptor on CBS — Sculptor Patrick Dougherty, also known as “The Stickman,” was featured on CBS This Morning on Sunday. Dougherty has been commissioned to build an installation next month at Reston Town Center. [CBS]

Follow The Yellow Brick Road — Hunters Woods Elementary School is gearing up for its production of The Wizard of Oz. Performances are March 19 and 20. Tickets are $5 at the door. [Hunters Woods PTA]

SLHS Track Kudos — South Lakes Junior Golden Kumi-Darfour finished fifth in the 500 meters and anchored the second-place girls 4×400 meter relay team for South Lakes High School at the VHSL 6A Indoor Track and Field Championship last week in Hampton, Va. SLHS finished 17th out of the 29 teams in the girls division while the boys were 18th out of 34 teams. Kumi-Darfour ran a season-best time of 1:17.43 in the 500. She teamed with senior Claire Nieusma and sophomores Devyn Jones and Nikayla Hoyte for a 4:04.07 in the 4×400 relay.

RCC Closed Tuesday Morning –Reston Community Center Hunters Woods will be closed on Tuesday, March 17 from 8 a.m. – 1 p.m. to accommodate Dominion Virginia Power scheduled equipment upgrades The building will be locked and all programs during that time have been canceled. The Terry L. Smith Aquatics Center will be open for Early Bird Swimming from 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m.  [RCC]

Yet Another Scam — The Fairfax County Sheriff’s Office is warning of telephone scammers, identifying themselves as sheriff’s deputies, who are calling residents and threatening them with arrest unless they pay the caller a large amount of money, usually on a money card. Colvin Run Mill Gets Grant — Friend of Colvin Run Mill in Great Falls has received a $1,600 Mastenbrook Grant from the Fairfax County Park Authority to purchase flour barrels for display purposes at the mill site. The bond funded grants provide limited matching funds for projects in Fairfax County parks.

Beware Phishing Scam — Attorney General Mark R. Herring said Virginia residents should be on the lookout for a major, ongoing “phishing” scam involving emails, phone calls, and social media messages purporting to be from the Attorney General and his office. The emails claim to be a “Final Legal Notification” from Attorney General Herring or his staff regarding debt owed to “Cash Advance, Inc.” [Virginia Attorney General’s office]

Honors For Hunters Woods Teacher — Ji Ahn, a resource teacher at Hunters Woods Elementary, was named one of two second place finishers in the Sally Ride-Deloitte 2014-15 Award for Teaching Innovation in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) competition. Ahn developed a program to introduce female students to the engineering design process via hands-on design challenges. Ahn earned a $2,500 cash prize and a Sally Ride STEM license for her school that will provide professional development for teachers, eBooks, teacher guides, and technical support.

Supervisors Give Themselves A Raise — The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors voted on Tuesday to raise their salaries. Board members now will earn $95,000 annually. The county is facing a $90 million revenue gap. [Washington Post]

County Tax Rate To Remain SteadyThe Fairfax County Board of Supervisors took the possibility of a real estate tax rate hike off the table Tuesday. The board voted to advertise a tax rate of $1.09 per $100 of assessed value, which is the current rate, in advance of next month’s public hearings on the proposed county budget. This means that the board can reduce the tax rate but cannot increase it. [Fairfax Times]
