Aug. 17 Is Works Sunday —  Members of 10 local congregations (Jewish, Christian and Muslim) will take part in Works Sunday next week. Works Sunday is a day of service with community projects ranging from making lunches at Embry Rucker Community Shelter to helping organize Inova’s Ronald McDonald House to running an ice cream social at Tall Oaks Assisted Living. Candy Drug Bust At Dulles — More than $80,000 worth of cocaine was found hidden inside caramelized sugar cane candy during an inspection at Washington Dulles International Airport last week. Customs officials seized over 1.5 pounds of cocaine disguised as candy from a Honduran woman. [Washington Post]

Virginia In-State Tuition Rises — Undergraduates at Virginia’s four-year public colleges and universities will see an average increase of 5.2 percent in tuition and mandatory fees compared to last year, the State Council of Higher Education says.  That’s an average increase of $544. Save the Date: Reston Regional Book Sale — Friends of the Reston Regional Library will hold its used books sale for children, teens and educators on Thursday, Aug. 21 (10 a.m. to 8 p.m.);  Friday, Aug. 22 (10 a.m. to 5 p.m.); Saturday, Aug. 23 (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.) and Sunday, Aug. 24 (1 to 3:30 p.m.) All proceeds go to benefit the Reston Regional Library and the Fairfax County Public Library system.

Artwork Needed — Reston Community Center seeks artwork for the Reston Multicultural Festival art exhibition, Art, Mirrors, Culture. Entry forms are due by Aug. 24. New Dogs Headed to Fairfax County — Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department will receive two newly trained search and rescue K-9s this Saturday. The dogs have been trained by the National Search Dog Foundation for a year and have been partnered with two firefighter/dog handlers, working a 24-hour shift with their handlers. The foundation has rescued hundreds of dogs, many on the brink of euthanasia, and turned them into highly skilled rescuers, the county says.

Romney on the Northern Virginia Stump — Former Republican Presidential candidate Mitt Romney will appear at a fundraiser for Barbara Comstock, who is running for Frank Wolf’s 1oth-District Congressional seat. The fundraiser is Sept. 30 at the home of Northern Virginia Technology Council CEO Bobbie Kilberg. [Washington Post]

Fairfax Unemployment Rises — The unemployment rate in Fairfax County increased from 3.6 percent in April to 4.3 percent in May. The number of unemployed residents increased over the month from 22,896 to 27,781. The County’s unemployment rate was unchanged compared to last May. The rise could be because of new graduates looking for work. [Fairfax County]

Felons’ Voting Rights Restored — Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe restored the voting rights of 2,500 felons on Wednesday. After previous Gov. Bob McDonnell began the process, McAuliffe in April made the process more transparent by reducing the waiting period for offenders with more serious offenses to have their rights automatically restored. Virginia’s Gay Marriage Ban Ruled Unconstitutional Again — A federal appeals court panel on Monday upheld a decision that said Virginia’s ban on same-sex marriage is unconstitutional. By a 2 to 1 vote, a panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit in Richmond said that the fundamental right to marry is guaranteed under the Constitution regardless of sexual orientation. This may pave the way for same-sex marriage to be recognized here. [Washington Post]

McDonnells On Trial Starting Monday — Former Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell and his wife Maureen go on trial beginning today in Richmond. The couple is accused of 14 corruption charges after they allegedly accepted gifts and money from a wealthy businessman. The trial should take about five weeks. [Washington Post]

Full Mondays A Go For FCPS — The Fairfax County Public Schools Board has formally approved its new school calendar that will eliminate short Mondays for elementary schools and allow for more snow days. The board was unanimous in its votes. The $7.6 million cost of implementing the plan will be paid for with a $38 million surplus from the last budget year. [Washington Post]

Milestone Year for Fairfax County Public Libraries — The FCPL will celebrate its 75th anniversary this year. It has come a long way since its founding, when the Board of Supervisors allotted $250 to get a county-wide system started in 1939. [Fairfax Times]

Totally Trucks Returns Aug. 8 — Reston Association will bring back its popular Totally Trucks event a week from Friday. Children can check out and climb on RA’s trucks, among others. [Reston Association]

Truland Was Seeking Restructure — Truland, the Reston-based electrical contractor that abruptly shut its doors Monday, had been trying to restructure itself the last three months in the hopes of selling to investors. [Washington Business Journal]

Crunching Commuter Fares — A Silver Line rider from Wiehle-Reston East will pay more to commute. A rush hour commute featuring a Fairfax Connector bus ride from Reston to West Falls Church and a Metro from there to D.C. currently costs $10.70 today but a similar route will cost $14.30 when commuters begin taking the  Silver Line on Monday. Silver Line Access Lagging — The Silver Line is set to open Saturday, but a large number of infrastructure and access projects around the Wiehle-Reston East Metro are not done. [Reston 2020]

Cookies For Commuters — On Monday, July 28, from 7:30 – 9:30 a.m., DoubleTree hotels will give away free chocolate chip cookies outside of Silver Line stations. DoubleTree will also conduct a special cookie delivery to the Arlington Food Assistance Center (AFAC).
