It’s been another relatively quiet week around Reston, with no arrests or stolen vehicles reported.

Fairfax County is participating in Operation Medicine Cabinet Clean-out, a program by the Drug Enforcement Administration’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Initiative, on Saturday (April 28).

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., residents are encouraged to drop off unused or expired medications at any Fairfax County Police district station. Only pills or liquids are allowed. No pressurized canisters or needles will be accepted.

Organizers say the disposal is free, confidential and safe. The program is intended to prevent accidental poisoning and drug abuse. Reston’s District Station is located at 12000 Bowman Towne Drive.

The initiative is part of a partnership between county departments, the Fairfax-Falls Church Community Services Board and local businesses.

Reston residents looking to safely dispose of their prescription drugs can drop them off at the Reston police station (12000 Bowman Towne Drive) on April 28 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

The medication drop off is a part of a wider effort by Fairfax County government called “Operation Medicine Cabinet Cleanout.”

Only pills and liquid medication are permitted for the drop off, officials will not accept needles or pressurized canisters.

Properly disposing of unused or expired prescription medication can prevent drug abuse and misuse, accidental poisoning and environmental pollution, Fairfax County officials said.

In 2016, 42,249 people died from opioid drug overdoses, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Selected police officers from the Reston District Station will begin wearing body cameras in March as part of the Fairfax County Police Department’s pilot program that was approved by the county’s Board of Supervisors last month.

The station was added to the program, which originally would have outfitted all patrol officers in the Mount Vernon and Mason district stations, because extra equipment is available, police said.

Researchers from American University who are studying the program determined it was more appropriate to outfit half of the patrol officers in each district in order to create a control group that would allow researchers to compare data between officers who do and do not have body cameras and work in the same area of the county.

“The Reston area was chosen because it differs from the two police districts already included in the program. The patrol areas within the Reston District include a number of high-rise buildings as well as stops along Metro’s Silver Line. Additionally, our Reston District Police Station is the newest building among our stations, and already has the physical infrastructure in place to accommodate the technical needs of the program,” the police department said in a statement.

The pilot program includes 230 cameras, which will be worn on the outside of the officer’s uniform or vest on a full-time basis. The addition of the Reston District Station is not projected to increase the cost of the three-month program, which will cost roughly $684,000 in fiscal year 2018. The department has the option of extending the program from three to six months.

In an Oct. 2015 report, the county’s Ad Hoc Police Review Commission recommended the program in order to increase community trust, improve evidence collection, decrease the number of complains against police officers and drive a “civilizing effect.”

“Statistics have clearly shown a decrease in use of force encounters, and in the resultant number of complaints by civilians against the local police departments once those departments employ [body cameras]. The reduction in complaints and the level of violence from both law enforcement officers and civilians with whom they interact daily perhaps serves as the greatest motivation for FCPD to begin using the cameras,” according to the report.

Cameras will record during any encounter of law enforcement and the pubic related to a call for service, a law enforcement action, subject stop, traffic stop, search or police service. Police officers are also expected to activate the devises in a private resident so long as officers have the legal authority to be in that location.

The devices are from Axon, a law enforcement technology giant formerly known as Taser International.

On Friday at around 8:18 a.m., the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report about an ongoing larceny at a store on the 46200 block of Potomac Run Plaza.

Cristian Hernandez-Mejia, a 32-year-old resident of Herndon, was charged with grand larceny after police caught him as he attempted to flee by foot to a nearby hotel. He is being held at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center on no bond.

On Wednesday, Fairfax County Police Department’s Reston District Station also reported a burglary on the 12900 block of Park Crescent Circle. Someone entered the residence at around 8:30 a.m. and stole electronics, according to the report.

Reston District police were unable to track down a man who was reported exposing himself to passers-by on Sunday night.

According to the police report, Fairfax County police were called around 9:30 p.m. to report a man who was allegedly exposing himself to others in a stairwell in the 13200 block of Overcup Court off of Sunrise Valley Drive. Officers responded to the area but were unable to locate the suspect. A description of the man has not been released.

In a separate incident, a Reston man was arrested Sunday evening after Loudoun County sheriff’s deputies witnessed him make an illegal U-turn and strike another vehicle at Route 7 and Belmont Ridge Road in Ashburn, according to the report. The man, identified as Alistair H. Temple, 30, was arrested for driving under the influence and refusing a breath test.

Another Reston man was arrested late Saturday night after Loudoun deputies reported he attempted to break into a home in Aldie while he was intoxicated. Deputies received the call just after midnight from residents of the home, located in the 25000 block of Green Mountain Terrace. When deputies arrived on the scene they located the man, identified as 43-year-old Lucio H. Cabrera-Sanchez, and arrested him for public intoxication and unlawful entry.

A man was beaten and robbed by men he encountered at a Reston laundromat this week, police reported Wednesday.

According to a statement from the Reston District, the male victim was doing his laundry at a laundromat in Hunters Woods Plaza around 11 p.m. on Sunday. Police said 10 other man were in the laundromat at the time.

The victim told police one of the men approached him and challenged him to “some type of physical game.” The victim agreed and left the laundromat with the 10 men. The group reportedly went to a nearby wooded area.

While in the woods, all 10 men reportedly assaulted the victim, beating him, and then took his wallet and other personal items he had on him.

Police said an investigation into the incident is still ongoing.

Reston District police arrested an 18-year-old Herndon man for breaking into a home in the middle of the night last week.

According to police, a resident of the 1400 block of Kingstream Drive in Herndon woke around 2 a.m. on Saturday, May 6 to the sound of a crash. The woman found a man in her kitchen rummaging through the refrigerator. He reportedly fled on foot when she approached him.

Responding officers located a man matching the suspect’s description going through the trunk of a car nearby. The man took off running but officers were able to catch up with him and apprehend him. Officers confirmed he was the same man who broke into the resident’s home earlier.

The man has been charged with burglary, petit larceny, vehicular trespassing and being drunk in public.

Reston District police are investigating an incident of indecent exposure that reportedly took place around 1:30 p.m. at Reston Town Center on Saturday.

According to Fairfax County police reports, a man saw a car blocking traffic near 11900 Market St. The man said he got out of his car to approach the car that was sitting in the through lane, and saw that the driver was exposing himself and touching himself inappropriately.

“He looked toward the driver’s line of sight and saw a group of young girls,” police wrote in the report.

The witness yelled at the man, who then drove away quickly.

In other crime news, police reports from the past week also indicated that firearms were stolen from a home in the 11100 block of Forest Edge Drive on Friday evening.

The residents of the home contacted police just before 8:30 that evening to report that sometime that day, an unknown burglar had entered the home through a basement window and had stolen firearms.

Police are investigating the alleged burglary.

A North Carolina man was arrested in the Reston Town Center area yesterday afternoon after Fairfax County police said he flashed a gun at security workers who confronted him for trespassing.

Police responded to a report of a man who had gone on private property without permission on the 12000 block of Bluemont Way about 11:45 a.m. Thursday.

Before cops arrived, security workers confronted the man who then showed a gun, according to authorities. But when security workers challenged the man, he complied.

Police arrested 35-year-old Robert S. Kao of Charlotte, N.C., on charges of brandishing a firearm, carrying a concealed weapon without a permit and trespassing.

No injuries were reported.

Two men abducted a woman in Sterling and drove her to Reston Sunday evening, according to the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office.

A man assaulted his estranged wife and forced her into a vehicle in Sterling just before 7:30 p.m. Sunday night, a witness told deputies. A male accomplice then drove the kidnapper and the victim to Reston.

Authorities arrested 39-year-old Alex Munguia and his accomplice, 45-year-old Marlen Almendarez-Juarez, in connection with the abduction. The two men are being held at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center without bond.  Read More

Two women stole a pack of syringes from a pharmacy at a Reston supermarket yesterday evening, injuring an employee who tried to stop them, according to Fairfax County police.

The incident happened at the Harris Teeter on the 12900 block of Highland Crossing Drive about 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Police said the women attempted to buy syringes from the pharmacy worker, but they didn’t have authorization to make the purchase, according to authorities. One of the women then hopped over the counter, snatched a pack of syringes and fled with the other woman.

The pharmacy employee attempted to stop the thieves, but was pushed away and received a minor injury.

Police said they’re looking for:

One suspect [who] was described as white or Hispanic. She weighed approximately 110 pounds and was wearing dark leggings. The second suspect was described as black, about 5 feet 9 inches tall, weighing approximately 200 pounds.

A man tried to steal another man’s bicycle outside his Reston home over the weekend, prompting a fight, Fairfax County police said.

The incident happened near the intersection of Ascot Way and Chesterfield Court about 3:45 p.m. Saturday.

The 59-year-old victim confronted the would-be thief when he saw him walking away with the bike, according to authorities. The two men started to fight, but the would-be robber fled without the bike when a passerby noticed the scuffle.

Police described the suspect as a 6-foot-1, 150-to-180-pound black man, wearing a green or olive-toned jacket and blue jeans.

The man was seen with a 5-foot-9 black woman in her early 20s, wearing a black skirt and shirt, with her hair parted and pulled up in two buns.

The victim refused medical attention.
