Herndon Resident Wins on Jeopardy! – Siddharth Hariharan, a 22-year-old medical student at Virginia Commonwealth University, talked to the Fairfax County NewsCenter about racking up more than $30,000 in prize money after winning two games in a row on Jeopardy! last month. Annual Thanksgiving Food Drive Begins – Reston Town Center and Reston Community Centers are kicking off their annual Thanksgiving Food Drive today. Nonperishable items can be dropped off at a number of locations including the Hunters Woods and Lake Anne facilities and Reston Town Center building lobbies. Lions, Tigers and Candidates, Oh My – Halloween enthusiasts from all over came out to Reston Town Center this past weekend to show off their costumes, compete in the many contests and more. Brama Italian Cuisine Now Open on Elden Street – Brama celebrated its grand opening on Friday evening, with a ribbon cutting by Herndon Mayor Lisa Merkel and several members of the Herndon-Dulles Chamber of Commerce. The restaurant serves brick oven-fired pizza and other Italian and Mediterranean-inspired dishes for lunch and dinner and offers both take-out and delivery. Metro Won’t Ditch Silver Line Power Equipment Tied to Smoke Incidents  — Power connections tied to a handful of smoke incidents in 2015 — including the L’Enfant Plaza incident that killed Carol Glover — will likely remain part of the tracks in the Silver Line extension under construction from Reston to Loudoun County. Fairfax County Fire & Rescue Makes Daring Rescue at Signature Apartments – First-responders from Reston Fire Station 25 and North Point Fire Station 39 used a tower crane to rescue a man from the fifth floor of the Signature Apartments construction site in Reston Friday afternoon when he suffered a sudden medical emergency. SLHS Band member David Clark earns honors/SLHS

Honor For SLHS Band Member — David Clark, a member of the South Lakes High School marching band, has been selected to the U.S. Army All-American Bowl Marching Band. He was honored at a ceremony at the school Oct. 20. He is one of 125 high schoolers nationwide selected to the group, which will perform at halftime of the U.S. Army All-American Bowl. Jan. 7 in San Antonio. This is the third straight year a SLHS student has earned a spot.

Fairfax County Considering Schools In High-Rise Buildings — The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors will hold a hearing Nov. 1 on a new policy to allow the development of “urban” or “vertical” schools in high-density areas or on parcels of limited size. [Reston 2020]

Drill At Dulles Saturday — The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority will conduct an emergency response and recovery exercise at Washington Dulles International Airport during the overnight hours of Saturday, Oct. 29, into Sunday, Oct. 30. Numerous emergency vehicles and response personnel will be visible at the Main Terminal between 11 p.m. and 4:30 a.m. During the exercise, a portion of the Arrivals (baggage claim) level inside the Main Terminal will be closed to the public.

South Lakes Cheerleading Liberty Conference winners/Credit: SLHS

Kudos, SLHS Cheerleaders — The South Lakes High School cheerleaders won the Liberty Conference title last week and finished second at the Regional Semifinals the weekend of Oct. 22. They will move on to compete at the Region Finals on Oct. 29 at Fairfax High School. If they finish in the top four, the will qualify for the state championships on Nov. 5 in Richmond.

Kudos, Former Seahawk — SLHS ’16 grad Vela McBride, who plays volleyball for American University, was named the school’s Geico Student-Athlete of the Week last week. McBride, who was also the Patriot League Rookie of the Week, had double-digits in kills in two of three victories for the Eagles last week, while hitting .333 or better in each match. She had a career-best 14 kills and hit .684 in a four-set win over Navy. [American University]
