Update at 5:30 p.m. — The teen has been found safe, according to Fairfax County police. “Officers located Elliott Byrum a short time ago,” the police department said Thursday afternoon. “He is in good health and will be reunited with his family shortly. Thanks to all concerned.”

Fairfax County police are asking for the public’s help in locating a “critical” missing teen last seen in Reston.

Police said 17-year-old Elliot Byrum was last seen in front of the Giant grocery store in the North Point Village Center (1452 Reston Parkway) around 2:50 p.m. Wednesday. Byrum reportedly works at the grocery store, but never went inside and checked in for his shift.

Police said they are concerned for Elliot’s well-being due to mental health issues.

“We have reason to believe he may be in danger due to mental disabilities and his family is concerned for his well-being,” police said in a statement early Thursday morning.elliot-byrum-courtesy-fcpd

Elliot is described as 5-foot-9, around 110 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. He may be wearing his Giant grocery work t-shirt. Photos distributed by police also show him wearing glasses.

Anyone who thinks they may have information about Elliot Byrum or his whereabouts is asked to contact Detective Bill Woolf at 703-246-4059 or the Fairfax County Police Department at 703-691-2131. Anonymous tips can also be called into Crime Solvers at 1-865-411-TIPS.

There are a batch of men’s grooming opening around Reston, but the owners of North Point Barber say their niche is old-school, no-nonsense men’s hair care.

Cousins Trang Nguyen and Kevin Do opened North Point Barbers at 1436 North Point Village Center about two weeks ago. Even though the shop is a few doors down from a Hair Cuttery and the high-end KLS Studios, Nguyen says they know they have a market.

“We are not doing color,” said Nguyen, who worked at nearby Reston Barber Shop for 10 years. “Nothing fancy. Just making men look handsome.”

Customer Joseph Britto, getting a haircut on Wednesday, says that’s what brought him into the shop.

“I am just a guy who wants a straightforward haircut,” he said.

Cuts at North Point Barber are $14, with discounts for kids, seniors and military members. They also offer hot towel shaves. Walk-ins are welcome.

North Point Barber is open weekdays, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sundays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Phone: 703-429-1147.

Chick Fil A rendering/Credit: Fairfax County

Chick-fil-A’s planned store at North Point Village Center will be 58 percent bigger than the current Burger King building that occupies that location.

Chick-fil-A plans to tear down the Burger King building to build the new restaurant. In its place, it plans a new restaurant with an exterior that better coordinates with existing buildings at North Point, according to a Fairfax County Planning Department staff report.

The Burger King space at 1490 North Point Village Center has been vacant since March of 2014. Chick-fil-A filed its applications with the county in November. Chick-fil-A has an existing location at 12160 Sunset Hills Rd., about 2 1/2 miles away.

The staff report recommends approval of the project, which will have a public hearing before the county planning commission on March 16 at 8:15 p.m.

Some of the development conditions include:

  • Screening the trash dumpsters
  • Adding secure bike racks
  • Installing water-efficient landscaping
  • Using environmentally conscious building materials
  • Using EnergyStar-certified appliances

The Reston Planning and Zoning Committee has expressed concern that going from the drive-thru to the shopping center’s exit will involve a complicated U-turn. Chick-fil-A reps said the North Point exit lane will be widened to 12 feet, but that the area between the drive-thru and the village center exit would not be changed.

Chick-fil-A plans to tear down the former Burger King building at North Point Village Center in order to make way for a new building to house the restaurant.

Chick-fil-A has filed a Planned Residential Community application with the Fairfax County Planning Commission, which will be heard at the planning commission’s March 16 meeting.

The new PRC plan is necessary so that Chick-fil-A can have a slightly bigger restaurant with an expanded drive-thru, land use attorneys told the Reston Planning and Zoning committee last month.

The Burger King space at 1490 North Point Village Center has been vacant since March of 2014. Chick-fil-A filed its applications with the county in November. Chick-fil-A has an existing location at 12160 Sunset Hills Rd., about 2 1/2 miles away.

John Martinez, Development Manager with Chick-fil-A, Inc., told the Reston P&Z committee the new location will have 96 seats and a children’s play area. There will be outdoor seating for approximately twenty diners, he added.

Martinez also said the North Point location will be a custom project, slightly smaller than is typical for Chick-fil-A because of the size and layout of the site.

There will be 15 dedicated parking spaces at the restaurant, as well as shared parking in the main parking area of the village center, Martinez said.

The new building will be slightly lower (19 feet compared with 21 feet) than the current one, but will contain an additional five feet for standard Chick-fil-A “tower components.”

Two trees will be removed due to configuration of the parking area, but additional landscaping is planned, the Chick-fil-A representatives said.

P&Z Committee members expressed concern that it would involve a complicated U-turn to get from the end of the drive-thru to the village center’s exit lane. Martinez said the exit lane will be widened to 12 feet, but that the area between the drive-thru and the village center exit would not be changed.

A county staff report featuring renderings will be made available next week.

Reston’s last photo developing store will shut its doors on Jan. 30.

The owner of Fotoimage 1HR, which had been at 1436 North Point Village Center since 2003, says its lease it expiring and will close.

Just a few years ago, there were camera stores/processing centers at South Lakes Village Center and Plaza America, to name a few.

But with the popularity of camera phones, digital cameras and self-service photo kiosks at places like CVS and Target, storefront photo operations are becoming a thing of the past.

“This has been a hard business to be in the last few years,” said owner Tim Klement.

Meanwhile, everything in the store, which also has framing services, is on sale. Camera bags are $5, for instance. Frames are buy one, get one 50 percent off.

No word from North Point owner Lerner Enterprises whether a new tenant has been signed.

That storefront formerly housed an AT&T store, which closed in October 2014.

This will be Pet Valu’s second location in Reston. There is a Pet Valu at South Lakes Village Center selling pet food, toys, treats, grooming supplies and other necessities. It also features pet rescue group adoptions on weekends, as well as a do-it-yourself dog wash.

A long-rumored plan for opening a second Chick-fil-A restaurant in Reston is in the works.

Chick-fil-A recently filed Planned Residential Community (PRC) documents with Fairfax County to establish a fast food restaurant (with drive-through) at 1490 North Point Village Center.

Interestingly, the former Burger King spot, which has been vacant since March of 2o14, is located at 1494 North Point. The application is for 1490 North Point Village Center, which currently houses a BB&T Bank branch. (Editor’s note: The address could be a clerical error; future documents will confirm exact location).

The application is being reviewed for quality control before official acceptance. There is a Fairfax County Planning Commission hearing scheduled for March 16, 2016.

The application should go through, however, as the site on which Chick-fil-A intends to open is designated Village Center Mixed Use in the Reston Comprehensive Plan and formerly contained a fast-food restaurant.

Meanwhile, the owners of the nearby Chick-fil-A on Sunset Hills recently confirmed on their Facebook page that the plan for North Point location is “moving forward.”
