Burned flagpole on Wainwright Drive/Tanya MazarowskiA Reston homeowner said vandals burned the American flag that was flying outside her home on Wainwright Drive on Tuesday night.

Tanya Mazarowski and her significant other, Michael, were home at the time. Neighbors alerted them to the fire on the flagpole, which is attached to their townhouse, and it was extinguished by the homeowners about 8:30 p.m.

“It’s so sad and scary this could happen here,” said Mazarowski, who moved to Reston earlier this year. “We do not think we were targeted individually. No one has any kind of beef with us. However, [Michael] is a retired military veteran of three services who served in both Iraq and Afghanistan as a Medic transporting critically injured service members home. This is crazy. And scary.”

Fairfax County Police said they are investigating the flag burning as a destruction of property case, possibly with bias. A bias crime is when a property crime is directed at a particular person, public information officer Roger Henriquez said.

“The fact that this is a symbol of the country, and on our home means we could have simply been targeted for our nationality,” said Mazarowski.

Police said they have not identified any suspects and this is an isolated incident so far.

Adam Torres/Credit: FCPDFormer Fairfax County Police Officer Adam Torres will be arraigned Wednesday on second-degree murder charges in the 2013 shooting death of an unarmed Springfield man.

A Fairfax County grand jury on Monday night returned the indictment against Torres, who was released from the department in July. He turned himself into authorities at the Fairfax County Detention Center. He is being held there without bond.

The charges are the first time a FCPD officer has faced criminal charges stemming from an on-duty shooting, the department said.

Torres was among officers at John Geer’s townhouse on Aug. 29, 2013. Geer, in a domestic dispute with his girlfriend, was in a standoff with police for 42 minutes. Torres said Geer said he had a gun, but other police at the scene said Geer placed it on the ground.

In the midst of negotiations, Torres fired one shot at Geer, 46, without warning, officers said.

Police then waited for a SWAT team and did not enter the house for more than an hour, according to testimony. They found Geer dead inside the house.

Torres told investigators he felt Geer was a threat when he brought his hands down to waist level. The other officers on the scene said Geer’s hands were above his head the entire time.

“It was not accidental,” Torres told investigators and The Washington Post reported. “No, it was justified. I have no doubt about that at all. I don’t feel sorry for shooting the guy at all.”

It took FCPD more than a year to publicly identify the shooter and fully investigate the shooting, which sparked protest in a year where police shootings are under examination around the country, such as Michael Brown’s death in Ferguson, Mo., among others.

It also initiated a police practices review panel in Fairfax County.

Fairfax County paid Geer’s family nearly $3 million in a civil case settlement earlier this year.

FCPD Chief Ed Roessler said in a statement Monday that he would meet with Geer’s family to discuss the administrative handling of the case.

“We have great respect for the Special Grand Jury process, the Office of the Commonwealth’s Attorney for Fairfax County, and the criminal justice system as this matter proceeds,” the chief aid in statement. “The loss of life is tragic for all. We express our sympathy to the Geer family, support to our great community and the men and women of the Fairfax County Police Department.

Rottweiler being sought by police/FCPDFairfax County Animal Control officers  are asking for the public’s help in locating a local woman whose dog was involved in a violent attack on another dog in Herndon on Sunday.

Officials are seeking the whereabouts of Diana Stein, 51, and her Rottweiler. Officers have filed several charges against the dog’s owner, who has apparently left the area. Warrants against Stein include: vicious dog, failure to notify a dangerous dog being loose and attacking another dog, and obstructing justice.

Officers responded to a report of an animal running at large and dog attack in the 100 block of Laurel Way in Herndon around 5:30 p.m. on Sunday.

The Rottweiler reportedly charged a Border Collie that was being walked near the apartment. The dogs were eventually separated by witnesses. The collie required veterinary attention as he sustained multiple bite wounds, animal control officers said.

The Rottweiler’s owner was also bitten and sustained several wounds. The Rottweiler had been involved in previous attacks and had been deemed a “dangerous dog” by the judicial system. County rules on “dangerous dogs” are stringent.

Due to the nature of the bites, the law requires that the dog needs to be quarantined. If the dog is not located, anyone suffering a human bite may need to go through the rabies post exposure series of shots.

Officers have made several attempts to contact Stein but are unable to locate her and ask for the public’s help in locating her.
