A freshly surfaced track will be waiting for South Lakes High School students when they return to school at the end of August.

Work on the project began earlier this month and is expected to continue through mid-August, South Lakes Athletics reported on Twitter. The account has been providing updates on the work as it progresses.

The track and the stadium are both fenced off during the project. It’s the first time resurfacing has taken place in about a decade, said Linda Sarabia Jones, SLHS director of student activities.

Camps that have in past years met on the field are taking place on the upper turf fields of the campus this summer, Jones said.

Lake Newport, North Hills, Lake Audubon and Autumnwood were winners at the Reston Swim Team Association meet Saturday. Several individual and relay records were beaten as well, making for an exciting day.

Lake Newport Lightning 626, Hunters Woods Blue Marlins 486

While Lake Newport got the win, the Hunters Woods team toppled some long-standing records.

Blue Marlins teammates J. Ham, C. Yang, P. Pan and M. Beach set a new record in the boys’ 15-18 200-meter medley relay with a time of 2:01.23, besting a time set in 1997. A new team record in the boys’ 15-18 50-meter backstroke was also set by Jack Henry Ham with a time of 28.95, topping a record from 1986.

Anna Redican, of the Lake Newport team girls’ 15-18 50-meter, beat her own backstroke record from June 10. Her time of 32.66 was about two-tenths of a second better than her previous time.

For Lake Newport, double event winners were Aiden Smith, Finley Smith, Jack Edgemond, Mara Redican, Raj Vats and Zoe Van Winckel. Triple event winners were Anna Redican, Deanna Tipler, Joseph Redican, Julia Wang, Michael Zhou, Nathan Ho and William Kohn.

For Hunters Woods, double event winners were Abigail Skinner, Fiona Elster, Grace
Meade, John Evans, Kacy Darling, Megan Lee and Megan Slater. Triple event winners were Andrew Li, Gwyneth Wagner and James Skelton.

North Hills Hurricanes 556, Ridge Heights Sharks 533

Gabriel Huang of North Hills set a new team record of 21:05 for the butterfly stroke in the boys’ 8 and under 25-meter. The old record was set in 1999.

For North Hills, double event winners were Evan Zhang, Evelyn Brabant, Joseph Sciortino, Katie Cazenas, Lacey Turner, Marlee Czarny, Samantha Sciortino and Zariya Khan. Triple event winners were Corey Clark, Fiona Shaw, Gabriel Huang and Sarah Sciortino.

For the Ridge Heights Sharks, double event winners were Charles Buckreis, Edith Chaddock, Ella Handerahan, Ethan McCrea, Hailey Brown, Hailey Wang, Ian Hansing, Marc Sipher, Paige Sogandares, Ryan Erickson and Spencer Blase. Triple event winners were Evan Blase, Josh Zhang and Shilai Li.

Deon King, a 2011 graduate of South Lakes High School, is once again on an NFL roster.

King signed a free-agent contract Monday with the Cleveland Browns. A linebacker, King joins the Browns for their veteran minicamp, which begins today in Berea, Ohio.

Undrafted out of Norfolk State, where he won the Buck Buchanan Award as the top defensive player at that collegiate level, King signed last year with the Dallas Cowboys. He was released from the Cowboys during final cuts, and he was later picked up by the San Diego Chargers. After playing two games with the Chargers, he was let go. The Indianapolis Colts added him to their roster off the waiver wire, and he appeared in four more games with them.

King recorded two tackles in the six NFL games he played in his rookie season. He was released by the Colts last month.

Despite a pair of record-setting performances by Lake Newport swimmers, the Barracudas held on for the win.

The Lake Newport team of Casey Storch, Michael George, Jack Edgemond and Zack Wang set a new league record in the boys’ 15-18 200-meter medley relay with a time of 1:55.15, besting a time set in 1999. In addition, Anna Redican set a Lightning-record time of 32.85 in the girls’ 15-18 50-meter backstroke, beating a record set last year.

For Lake Newport, double event winners were Alexander Grover, Bridget Brennan, Casey Storch, Michael George, Ryan Giebel, and Zoe Van Winckel. Triple event winners were Anna Redican, Julia Wang and Michael Zhou.

For some athletes at South Lakes High School, the student-athlete lifestyle won’t end at graduation.

From ten different sports, 29 varsity athletes from the South Lakes Seahawks will play in college.

Playing baseball, Noah Luckenbaugh will continue his career at the College of Holy Cross in Massachusetts. Dillon Suzuki will play at the United States Coast Guard Academy in Connecticut, where he will also wrestle.

Marcus Cherry will play basketball at the Massanutten Military Academy in Virginia.

College football players will include Andrew Funaki at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., and David Kroll at the University of Delaware.

There will be four South Lakes lacrosse players playing in college. Matt Hughes will play at Mercer University in Georgia; Taylor Newman-Farr will play at St. Joseph’s in Pennsylvania; Chris Sherbert will play at Virginia Wesleyan University; and JC Sipher will play at Denison University in Ohio.

Soccer players include Abby Alexa for Davis & Elkins in West Virginia; Jared Brewer for Penn State-Harrisburg; Conor Gill for Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania; Jenna Hirshfeld for Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts; and Jacob Schuh for Bridgewater College in Virginia.

Jazmyn Stokes will play softball for Bucknell University in Pennsylvania.

Five swim and dive athletes will continue their careers in college. Megan Carney will swim at University of Mary Washington in Virginia; Gianmichel D’Allesandro will swim at UNC-Wilmington; Ben Gryski will swim at the University of Massachusetts; Emily Landeryou will swim at the United States Military Academy in New York; and Paige Sogandares will swim at the College of Wooster in Ohio.

The sport with the most SLHS athletes moving on to college is track and field, with six. Naomi Brindley will run at Radford University in Virginia; Erin Gray will run at the University of Mary Washington in Virginia; Devyn Jones will run for the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado; Timiebi Ogobri will run at The Citadel in South Carolina; Dimarcus Vilcheck will run for Belmont Abbey College in North Carolina; and Arianna Spencer will run at Linn University in Florida.

Two SLHS volleyball players will play in college. Kristin Allgaier will play at Dickinson College in Pennsylvania and Charlotte Vollmers will play at Hollins University in Virginia.

In addition:

• Olivia Norman will be on the gymnastics team at George Washington University. Norman competes with the Chantilly Academy Gymnastics Gymstars club.
• Grace Obando will be a member of the triathlon team at Arizona State University.

Up in Minnesota, the Macalester College Scots are heading to their first NCAA Division III baseball championship tournament, thanks in large part to a local player.

The Scots are going to the tournament after winning the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship Saturday. Jared Abelson, a 2015 graduate of South Lakes High School, started the title game with a leadoff single and scored on a hit by the next batter, setting the pace in a 13-5 win over Bethel University. Abelson ended the game 2-for-5 with an RBI, and he ended the three-game playoff tournament with a .500 batting average.

The sophomore’s playoff performance was no fluke. Abelson, who plays center field and catcher, finished the MIAC season sixth in the conference in batting average (.371), hits (53), runs scored (35) and on-base percentage (.451).

In 2014, Abelson told the South Lakes Sentinel why he loves playing baseball.

“It’s all about overcoming obstacles. The beauty in baseball is that you don’t have to be 6’5″ to be the best player. Anyone can be great; you just have to be the hardest working guy, especially in the offseason.”

According to his profile on the Macalester College Athletics website, Abelson is 5 foot 9.

Abelson and the Scots start the 56-team tournament Thursday night in Whitewater, Wisconsin, with a game against Concordia University Chicago.
