Police in Fairfax County are still searching for a 16-year-old girl and her 5-month-old baby after they went missing last month.

Lizzy Lizbeth Rivera Colindres and her son, Aidan David Castillo Rivera, were last seen Jan. 14 at their home on Rhoden Court in Springfield. Her mom reported her missing the next day.

According to police, it was originally believed the girl left voluntarily with the baby’s father, 18-year-old Jose Ivan Castillo Rivas. New information, however, suggests Colindres and her son may be in danger, and she may have left out of fear of Rivas.

Colindres is described as Hispanic, about 5 feet 6 inches tall and 125 pounds. She has long black hair with light-colored stripes in it. She wears glasses.

Updated at 3:35 p.m. with information from police press conference

A 21-year-old Herndon man is charged with attempted capital murder in relation to an incident late Sunday night where shots were fired at a Fairfax County police officer in his cruiser.

Brian Neftali Landaverde, of Astoria Circle, also faces a charge of using a firearm in the commission of a felony, the Fairfax County Police Department announced Tuesday afternoon.

The incident took place at about 11:45 p.m. Sunday on Rossmore Court, off Georgetown Pike near Great Falls. The officer attempted to initiate a traffic stop when one suspect fled from the vehicle. The driver then turned the car around and came at the officer’s cruiser. Shots were fired, and at least two bullets struck the police car.

The suspect had been arrested Monday night in Herndon. At a press conference Tuesday afternoon, Herndon Police Chief Maggie DeBoard said Landaverde was apprehended after he was spotted waving a gun in the parking lot of a business on Elden Street near Alabama Drive.

“He took off running, which obviously raised some red flags for us,” she said. “He’s running for a reason.”

Landaverde was charged in Herndon with possession of a stolen firearm. During the course of the investigation, DeBoard said, officers connected Landaverde with the Fairfax County case and alerted FCPD detectives.

“I think it was good police work all around,” she said. “It was great work by the officers in Herndon… and it was phenomenal work by the detectives in Fairfax.”

Fairfax County Police Chief Edwin Roessler Jr. said in addition to the Herndon officers “going above and beyond,” his department received a number of “solid leads” from the community that helped them make the arrest. He said evidence has been recovered linking Landaverde to the crime.

FCPD says Landaverde was in the vehicle with two juveniles, ages 16 and 17, one of whom is the person who fled the vehicle just before the shooting. Roessler said at the press conference that the two juveniles have also been located and are being interviewed by police.

“We have made our county safer by taking these violent thugs off the street,” the chief said.

Roessler said the vehicle involved the incident has been recovered, and damage to the windshield indicates the bullets were fired from inside the car.

The chief also said the officer who was fired upon is doing well and is receiving support from his colleagues.

“This is upsetting to all of us as police officers,” he said. “This is very traumatic for anybody.”

Fairfax County Police are also still looking for suspects involved in gunshots being fired at an officer in his cruiser late Sunday night near Great Falls.

As the investigation into shots being fired at a Fairfax County police officer late Sunday night continues, Police Chief Edwin Roessler pleaded for the community’s help.

“We need as much information as possible. We need to continue to make our community safe,” Roessler said at a news conference Monday afternoon. “These suspects attempted to murder a police officer, and I beg for your help.”

Relatively little is known about what happened at about 11:45 p.m. Sunday on Rossmore Court, off Georgetown Pike near Great Falls. What is known is that a passenger fled from a vehicle as an officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop, and the driver then drove at a high rate of speed in the direction of the cruiser. The suspect fired gunshots, with two striking the officer’s vehicle.

The officer was unhurt. Roessler said no further information would be released about the officer’s status until a threat assessment has been conducted to ensure this was not a targeted ambush.

Still images from the officer’s dash cam were released Monday afternoon; however, the photo quality is hindered by the darkness and rainy conditions, Roessler said. Roessler said the officer did not return fire, as the situation unfolded very rapidly.

The chief repeatedly emphasized the severity of the situation.

“Anybody that’s willing to shoot at a marked police car, knowing it’s a police officer, is a danger not only to the brave men and women of the Fairfax County Police Department, but to our community,” he said. “We need to bring these people to justice.”

Roessler said the suspect who fled appeared to be wearing pajama-style sweatpants. No other defining characteristic of either suspect, or whether there was anyone else in the car, is known at this time.

The vehicle was described as a white Toyota or Mazda from the late 1990s or early 2000s, with black molding on the doors. Roessler said it may have a damaged windshield, as police are unsure whether the gunshots were fired through the windshield or from outside the car.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the FCPD at 703-691-2131, or call Detective C. Guyton at 703-856-8547. Citizens can also be eligible for a cash reward up to $1,000 if they contact Crime Solvers or text-a-tip by texting “TIP187” plus the message to CRIMES(274637).

Herndon police shooting

The 32-year-old Herndon man killed Monday by police after a chaotic barricade situation had shot his brothers after a fight with his girlfriend.

Fairfax County Police say 32-year-old Mohammad Azim Doudzai of 13316 Covered Wagon Lane was arguing with his 28-year-old girlfriend when she called his brothers to come talk to him. The fight escalated, and he pulled a gun and shot his brothers, ages 37 and 23. The injured men fled the home along with the girlfriend, driving to the hospital and calling police.

Officers who responded to the home, where Doudzai had barricaded himself inside. During the incident, police say, Doudzai set fires inside the home and there were reports of what sounded like gunfire.

From FCPD:

As officers attempted negotiations with the suspect, they discovered there was a 29-year-old man trapped inside the home. He was a roommate and not related to the family. When the incident escalated, he hid in a room upstairs and called 911 to report he could not escape. Following the response of the Special Operations Division (SOD), officers made the decision to approach the home out of concern for the hostage, neighbors and suspect. Smoke had filled the home and was billowing out the windows. When a team of officers approached the door, the suspect came out with at least one knife in hand and was shot. Members of SOD quickly entered the home and rescued the hostage.

The officer who shot and killed Doudzai, a 16-year veteran of the department assigned to the Special Operations Division, has been placed on routine administrative leave while the investigation is conducted.

Detectives recovered a gun and a knife from the home, police say.

Reston Stabbing/Van Applegate FOX 5

The Fairfax County Police Department has released more information about the suspect in a Sunday afternoon stabbing near South Lakes High School.

Police say the suspect is a Hispanic male in his 20s. He is around 5 feet 4 inches tall and about 170 pounds. He was wearing a black shirt, black pants and a blue jacket. He may drive a blue Subaru STI.

According to police, the man stabbed two people when a fight broke out during a pickup soccer game at about 2:20 p.m. Sunday.

From FCPD:

An argument broke out during the game and punches were thrown. At some point, one man took out what was believed to be a box-cutter and allegedly cut two players on the opposing team. Responding officers rendered first aid until rescue arrived. Both were taken to a local hospital; one with life-threatening injuries. Both victims are now expected to survive.

Today’s FCPD press release lists the suspect as white; however, a spokesperson at the police department confirmed the suspect to be Hispanic, as was originally reported.

The two victims are 22 and 23. The 23-year-old was cut in the upper body and suffered a serious injury. The 22-year-old was cut in the leg.

Fairfax County Police say the man shot and killed Monday afternoon by law enforcement in Herndon lunged at officers with a knife.

It was the end of a two-hour barricade situation in the 13300 block of Covered Wagon Lane that began when police were called to the scene for a report of two men having been shot in a domestic incident. At about 2:40 p.m., officers from the Reston District responded to the residence, where they found the armed suspect had barricaded himself inside.

Other officers responded to the hospital, where the victims — a pair of brothers — had driven themselves.

Officers at the Covered Wagon Lane residence set up a perimeter to isolate the area and began evacuating neighbors. Police say their preliminary investigation reveals the man had fired several shots and started a fire inside the home. Officers later learned there was another man “trapped inside [who] could not escape.”

Members of the Crisis Negotiations Team and SWAT were called to assist. Police say they made several attempts to negotiate with the suspect and have him surrender.

From FCPD:

As smoke inundated the house and billowed out the windows, officers heard repeated gunshots. Officers also observed the suspect holding and moving around with at least one knife. Out of concern for the hostage and the suspect, officers made the decision to approach the home.

As they approached the front door, the suspect stepped outside armed with knife in hand and lunged toward the officers in an aggressive manner. Both less-lethal and deadly force were deployed. The suspect was shot. Officers immediately began rendering aid to him and he was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

WRC-TV’s news chopper recorded the incident, showing an officer throwing an apparent flash grenade into the open door before the suspect emerged.

The two initial victims are expected to survive, police say. The hostage was treated at the scene for non-life-threatening injuries.

Detectives are continuing to investigate the events and trying to determine the relationship between the victims and the suspect, who was identified Tuesday morning as 32-year-old Mohammad Azim Doudzai.

The officer involved in the shooting is on routine administrative leave while the investigation is being conducted, police say. No responding officers were injured.
