Fairfax County Police A traffic stop for a suspected drunk driver ended with a second suspected drunk driver crashing into a Fairfax County Police car and sending two officers to the hospital with injuries.

The incident happened about 11:30 p.m. on Wednesday on the Fairfax County Parkway near Sugarland Drive.

Two officers were on a traffic stop conducting DWI sobriety tests on a driver, police said.

That’s when a 2003 Toyota sedan driven by Alfred Jorge Guillen Escobari struck the rear of the first cruiser, causing it to strike the rear of the second cruiser. The momentum from the initial impact caused the second cruiser to move forward striking both officers.

Both officers were transported to a local hospital with non life-threatening injuries, police said.

The subject driver of the initial traffic stop, John B. St. Pierre, 44, of Vienna, was charged with DWI. Escobari, 23, of Sterling, was also charged with DWI. Neither arrestee required medical attention.

Fairfax County Police Officers from Fairfax County’s Reston District Station say a robbery and the burglary of an occupied dwelling took place last week.

The incidents were in unincorporated Herndon and Great Falls, both of which are policed by the Reston District Station

The robbery occurred at the Clocktower Shopping Center in the 2400 block of Centreville Road in Herndon on May 26. Police said a man entered a restaurant shortly before 10:30 p.m., displayed a handgun to an employee and demanded money.

The suspect took cash and fled. The victim did not require medical attention.

The suspect was described as average build, about 5 feet 10 inches tall, and wearing all dark clothing, a beanie on his head, and a mask over his face.

The burglary took place in the 11300 block of Fox Creek Farm Way about 3 a.m. on May 28, police said. A resident reported someone entered the residence overnight and took property.

police line1Fairfax County Police said that the string of car break-ins along Glade Drive near Hunters Woods Village Center has abated in the last several weeks.

Speaking at a community meeting at Reston Community Center Hunters Woods on Thursday, Lt. Lance Schaible said there were 20 larcenies in the area in April and only four in May.

Police said they recently arrested two adults on stolen credit card charges. Since those two suspects entered custody, nearby larceny incidents have also plummeted, they said.

While those suspects were adults, car break-ins are most often crimes of opportunity committed by teenagers, Schaible said.

“Larcenies generally occur in areas where lots of people (and cars) are close together,” he said. “It occurs near all shopping centers in Reston. Those are also areas with a quick getaway.”

Occasionally, suspects will break windows to get at something of value, such as a phone or a laptop case, police said. But in most instances, they will just go down a row of cars trying to see if any are unlocked.

Police said citizens should double check that car doors are locked. They said a surprising number of people think they have locked the car doors, but in the hurry to get bags, kids and other things into the house, they often have not locked.

They also reminded people to never leave valuables in the car. Even if you are running into your house for a minute, always take your purse, phone, work bag and other valuables.

One resident in attendance asked officers if Metro’s Silver Line is to blame for any crime increase in the area.

Schaible said that has not been proven “because Metro is here but there is nothing around it.” Crime tends to be where people congregate, he added.

However, as development and population continues to grow around Reston’s eventual two Metro stations, staffing and policing needs will be reassessed, Hunter Mill Supervisor Cathy Hudgins said.

“The station is going to be strained,” she said. “It is a fact we are going to need staff.”

Fatal Shooting on Stoneview SquareFairfax County Police said the three men who have been charged in the attempted robbery-turned-shooting death in Reston nearly two weeks ago were all visitors to the Stoneview Square apartment, but none was the shooter.

The resident of the Shadowood condo where the May 17 incident occurred apparently was the triggerman, but is not yet facing charges because “according to law, he was defending himself in his own home,” said FCPD Lt. Lance Schaible.

Virginia statute allows for use of force in relation to perceived threat, says Schiable.

“If someone is in your home … you can take the level of force you feel necessary,” he said. “Ultimately, the decision [on level of force allowed  by law] is made by the Commonwealth’s Attorney.”

Schiable did not name the apartment resident.

Police said that there was a gathering of five men — one resident and four visitors to the apartment in the 11600 block of Stoneview Square. All of the men knew one another “and had been hanging out a couple of nights prior,” said Schaible.

The gathering turned into an attempted robbery, an altercation and the shooting death of Rashad Kejuan Daye, 24, of Herndon.

Three men have been charged with attempted robbery and use of firearm in commission of a felony: Eddie Rodriquez, 22, of Woodbridge; Dominique May, 18, of Reston; and Ja’lan Merrill, 21, of Herndon.

At the time of his death, Daye was on a suspended sentence for felony drug charges in 2014, court records show.

May and Rodriguez will have preliminary hearings in Fairfax County General District Court July 22. Merrill will have a preliminary hearing on July 29.

Schaible’s remarks came at a community meeting with FCPD Reston Station officers at Reston Communtiy Center Hunters Woods on Thursday. While the meeting was mainly about a rash of recent car break-ins along Glade Drive, several residents had questions about the May 17 shooting death and the general safety of the area.

Police reiterated this was not a random incident and was not a home invasion as they first reported.

Fairfax County Police A third man has been arrested following a robbery that ended with a man dead from a gunshot wound on May 17 in Reston.

Jalan Merrill, 21, of Herndon, was taken into custody by Fairfax County Police and the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force Wednesday in Leesburg after a warrant had been issued for his arrest. He was charged with robbery and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

Merrill will be transported to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center, police said.

Last week, police charged Eddie Rodriquez, 22, of Woodbridge, and South Lakes High School student Dominique May, 18, of Reston, with robbery and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

Police said all three men were at an apartment in the 11600 block of Stoneview Square on the afternoon of Sunday, May 17. Police said there was a gathering of men in an apartment, there was a robbery attempt and an altercation that ended with 24-year-old Rashad Kejuan Daye, of the Herndon area, being shot and killed.

Daye, whom acquaintances said usually went by his middle name Kejuan, was one of the visitors to the Stoneview Square apartment, police said.

police line1Officers from Fairfax County Police’s Reston District Station will be on hand to address crime concerns in the Hunters Woods area at a community meeting on Thursday.

The meeting is at 6:30 p.m. at Reston Community Center Hunters Woods.

Crime Prevention officer Katy Defoe said the meeting was organized to address the rash of thefts from automobiles along Glade Drive, however officers will address any area crime questions.

Police held similar meetings in the spring of 2013 and 2014. At last year’s meeting, officers said they would increase visible police presence at Hunters Woods Village Center, particularly on foot and by bike. Defoe says that has had somewhat of an impact in crime awareness.

However, two recent robberies at the village center have some people on edge. On April 15, a woman was the victim of attempted robbery at knifepoint in daylight. On May 2, there was a robbery and assault at 8:30 p.m.

In December, the SunTrust bank inside the Hunters Woods Safeway was robbed — part of a string of county robberies in which the suspect has since been arrested.

Last week, a man was killed at nearby Shadowood Condos when a robbery attempt ended in gunfire. The victim knew the suspects, and two have been arrested.

The Hunters Woods patrol area has somewhat higher crime than other neighborhoods in Reston, FCPD statistics show. But it does not rank the highest. The Reston Town Center/Reston Hospital patrol area had more property crimes and crimes against society in 2014.

Hunters Woods had 442 property crimes (robbery, larceny, burglary, etc.) and 83 crimes against society (drugs, weapons, prostitution) in 2014. Cumulative stats for 2015 are not yet available, but Defoe said they would be addressed at Thursday’s meeting.

Fairfax County Police Two burglaries on Pinecrest Road near Fox Mill early Saturday ended with the arrest of a teenager.

Residents of a home in the 12800 block of Pinecrest Road told Fairfax County Police they were awakened by noises coming from the lower level of their house about 3:29 a.m.

One of the residents yelled, causing the suspect to flee. The victims did not require medical attention, police said.

About 10 minutes later, a resident in the 12900 block of Pinecrest Road told police they heard noises from the basement of the home and called police.

After a search, officers located the suspect and arrested him in a car nearby, said police spokeswoman Lucy Caldwell. The 17-year-old boy was charged with burglary, and police said they believe he is responsible for both incidents. The victims did not require medical attention, police said.

Last week, a couple on Triple Crown Road, less than a mile away, were also surprised by a burglary while they were home. The burglar got away with cash and other household items. It is not known if last week’s incident was related to the Saturday incidents.

police line1A husband and wife on Triple Crown Road in Reston were the victims of a burglary Tuesday evening — while they were home.

Fairfax County Police said the call came in about 10:05 p.m. The couple told police they were in the lower level of their single family home when they heard footsteps above.

The couple went upstairs to find an unknown man leaving through the sliding glass door, said police spokeswoman Lucy Caldwell.

Police called out the K9 unit and the helicopter, and a search for the suspect in the Glade Drive area ensued.

The suspect, who got away with cash and some other household items, has not yet been located. The homeowners were not injured, Caldwell said.

Police said the intruder may have entered through an unlocked door, so FCPD wants to remind residents to always keep doors locked and their eyes open.

Stoneview Square shooting

Fairfax County Police say the incident that resulted in a shooting death Sunday in Reston was not a home invasion, as they initially reported.

Detectives said the shooting, which took place about 2:50 p.m. on Sunday at the 11600 block of Stoneview Square and Shadowood Condos, took place after a gathering of men ended in a robbery attempt, an altercation and the shooting death of a 24-year-old Reston man.

Originally, police said the incident stemmed from a home invasion (though the residents and the suspect knew one another) and that they were looking for two suspects who fled the scene.

By Sunday evening, police said they were no longer looking for two additional suspects.

In addition to the fatality, another man was injured when he was grazed by a bullet, police spokeswoman Lucy Caldwell said. His injuries are not life-threatening.

Police have recovered the weapons, said Caldwell. She said multiple shots were fired.

Police are still investigating. They have not released the name of the man who was killed or identified whether anyone has been charged.

There has not been a homicide in Reston since 2013. There were two that year, but both stemmed from domestic incidents.

Fatal Shooting on Stoneview Square

Update, 7 p.m. Sunday — Fairfax County Police say one man was killed and another injured in a home invasion robbery on Stoneview Square in Shadowood Condos on Sunday afternoon.

Police spokeswoman Lucy Caldwell said police are no longer pursuing two male suspects who they originally thought fled the scene.

“Some people came forward that may have been involved,” said Caldwell. “Police are not actively driving around looking for suspects. But anyone who has information, we would like to talk to you.”

Caldwell said police believe the incident was not random and “at least one of the persons in the home knew the people at the door.”

Initial reports indicated that five men entered an apartment and engaged in some sort of disagreement, police said. There were at least two men at home in the apartment.

Police have recovered the weapons, said Caldwell. She said multiple shots were fired. The injured person was grazed by a bullet and is being treated for non life-threatening injuries, she added.

“We are still trying to determine who shot whom and what the circumstances were,” she said.

Original story, Sunday 5:30 p.m. — Fairfax County Police are searching for two suspects in a Sunday afternoon home invasion in Reston that ended with a fatal shooting.

The incident occurred in the 11600 block of Stoneview Square about 3 p.m., police said.

Police spokesman Lucy Caldwell said the incident did not appear random and the suspect and victims knew one another. The homeowner was not harmed, police said.

Police said one of the suspects was killed and one captured. Two suspects remained at large as of 5 p.m.

The suspects at large are described as two black males between 19-25 years old, police said. One was wearing a red/white/blue hat. The other had a medium afro.

The fatality will be Reston’s first homicide since 2013.

Police have not identified the deceased or the captured suspect.

Reston Now will have more details as they occur.
