Tubbs is a beautiful beagle mix who, along with his sister Rosie, are just adorable examples of what rescue dogs can be.

Only about 12 weeks old now, we think they’ll end up as nice medium-small-size dogs when grown, maybe around 30 pounds or so. These adorable babies were so cooperative for their photo session, as you can clearly see in the pictures. These great pups are a nice blend of friendly affection and normal puppy playfulness and will both be great company.

This extremely friendly little fella is going to bring lots of joy to some lucky adopters.

Police in Herndon, along with the help of residents, reunited a service dog with her owner Wednesday.

According to Jane Ross, Herndon PD information specialist, service dog Bella went missing after her owner was involved in a minor car accident at about 10:40 a.m. Tuesday in the area of Elden and Grant streets.

“When [her owner] opened the door, Bella unfortunately got out of the car and ran,” Ross said.

Herndon Police used their social media pages to spread information about Bella and engage the public in helping track the 8-month-old Anatolian Shepherd mix down.

Bella was spotted by a citizen at about 11 a.m. Wednesday near the police station, Ross said. Police officers along with members of the public attempted to reach the dog, who was eventually corralled at about 12:10 p.m. by an employee at Flagship Car Wash (632 Grant St.) and reunited with her owner, safe and sound.

Dogs will be the guests of honor Saturday during the “Wag Fest” celebration in Reston.

At the event, scheduled for 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., dog lovers will have the opportunity to, among other activities:

• Learn about the county’s nine dog parks and find out about opportunities to serve as a volunteer dog park monitor
• Visit with search and rescue dogs from Fairfax County Fire and Rescue’s Virginia Task Force 1
• See a police K9 unit demonstration
• Treat their dogs to handmade doggie treats
• Get a lesson in dog park etiquette and speak with service dog trainers

Four-legged friends in Reston may soon have a new favorite place to visit.

Arlington-based pet store Dogma Bakery announced earlier this week that it plans to open a Reston location in the space formerly housed by PetMAC Pet Nutrition Center, which recently closed due to an illness suffered by the owner.

PetMAC had been in the location about two years. Dogma says it plans to keep all three of PetMAC’s employees to work at its new store.

The company’s website advertises the new Reston location as a “grooming salon,” but they have responded to customers on Facebook by saying they plan to offer some of their house-made treats for dogs as well.

“We will have ice cream and some treats. Maybe not the entire selection, but we can always make sure to have your favorites ready for you when you come by.”

Dogma said earlier this week in its post that it is “[k]ind of unofficially open,” but that it would have an official opening soon. No operating hours for the store are being provided quite yet.

The shop is located at 11412 Washington Plaza West, in Lake Anne Plaza.

A 19-year-old Reston man is facing a number of charges after police say he tossed a guinea pig to its death.

The incident happened Friday afternoon on the 2200 block of Castle Rock Square.

“Around 12:40 p.m. Animal Protection Police responded to assist officers on a domestic violence incident in the Reston area,” Fairfax County Police said in a report today. “The suspect had thrown the victim’s pet guinea pig off the balcony and left the area. APP took the animal for an evaluation and determined it was deceased.”

Theron Boone was arrested Saturday and taken to the Adult Detention Center. He faces charges of animal cruelty, domestic violence, destruction of property and preventing someone from calling 911.

Reston resident Don Chernoff recently used his engineering background and concern for his dog Sunny to invent a sturdy shoe that he says has improved the pet’s quality of life.

Chernoff, inventor and founder of Skyroll luggage said Sunny, now 12, had a tumor in his left front paw. The paw was amputated about two years ago.

Sunny got a prosthetic from the vet, but the dog kept breaking it and chewing on it. That’s when Chernoff was inspired to design one himself.

“I thought using a sneaker on the bottom would work better, and it did,” Chernoff said in an email.

Chernoff said he destroyed his old pair of Nike Zoom Vapor 9 shoes. He used the shoe parts and duct tape, to upgrade into a “faux paw” — and now Sunny gets around much better.

Chernoff says he is not looking for a patent, a deal with Nike or to make more shoes. That is, unless Sunny breaks his current faux paw.

Two residents of Southgate Square are facing charges after Fairfax County Police rescued more than 30 animals from the Reston home last May.

More than 35 cats and two dogs were taken from the home in the 2200 block of Southgate Square in mid-May after a neighbor called police about a strong odor.

Fairfax County Animal Control officers have charged Catherine Nagle, 71, and Daniel Orenge, also 71, with eight counts of inadequate care of animals by owner and six counts of animal cruelty. Both charges are misdemeanors. Both will appear in court on July 30.

At the time of the rescue, the animals were taken to Pender Veterinary Centre for evaluation, treatment and placement, said FCPD spokeswoman Lucy Caldwell.

“All animals were treated by veterinarian with varying degrees of medical issues,” she said. “One puppy was fine and had no medical issues.”

The animals are currently at the Fairfax County Animal Shelter, Caldwell said.

Dozens of pets are waiting for you at Reston Town Center this weekend.

The nonprofit GoodDogz.org is sponsoring its 10th annual Home 4 The Holidays pet adoption event, where more than 40 rescue organizations will be on hand from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

Some of the rescue groups include Friends of Homeless Animals, Lucky Dog Animal Rescue, Lost Dog & Cat Rescue Foundation and Homeless Animals Rescue Team (HART). In addition, several breed specific groups will have booths, as will companies selling pet products.
