Lake Anne Farmers Market

The Reston Farmers Market opens for its 18th season at Lake Anne Plaza’s parking lot Saturday with its usual — and sometimes unusual — assortment of produce, eggs, meats, homemade baked goods, pickles, popcorn and honey.

The market, which spreads out into the craft market on the plaza, is the most robust farmers market among the 11 markets operated by Fairfax County. It was also named “Best Market in Northern Virginia for 2013” by Virginia Living Magazine.

Fairfax County markets are producer-only, meaning that all of the farmers and producers may only sell what they raise on their farms or make from scratch. The farmers and producers all come from within a 125 mile radius of Fairfax County.

Market hours are 8 a.m. to noon. There’s also a master gardener to answer questions, live music, and a variety of other goods and services — as well as people-watching — to keep you entertained.

Here’s a list of the vendors who will be set up for the 2016 season, which will run through mid-November.

Compost Bin/Kitchen Compost Bins of LakelandDon’t throw away coffee grounds, corn husks, fruit peels and other earth-friendly refuse. Bring them to Reston Farmers Market at Lake Anne Saturday mornings.

Reston Environmental Action (REACT) is collecting scraps next to the kettle corn stand. Either bring them in a container to empty into the bin, or place scraps in “If You Care” compostable bags, (which can be purchased at Whole Foods, MOMs Organic Market or Harris Teeter) and place the whole bag in the bin.

The scraps are picked up by District Compost and taken to a commercial composting facility, where they will be turned into compost that will be broken down into soil enrichment for other gardeners and farmers.

Here’s what’s compostable:

  • Fruit and vegetables (such as apple cores, banana peels, melon rinds, corn husks, coconut shells, potato peels, squash seeds, stems and peels, etc.)
  • coffee grounds and filters
  • tea bags (remove metal staples from the bag and/or tag)
  • nut shells
  • onions and garlic
  • crushed egg shells

Reston Farmers Market/File photoMarket Master John Lovaas will ring the old Inca cow bell at 8  a.m. on Saturday, announcing to the community that the Reston Farmers Market at Lake Anne Plaza is open for the season.

Lovaas says the 2014 market has come a long way since it began in 1998 with 12 vendors.

This season, there will be 28 vendors at Lake Anne — featuring everything from seasonal produce to naturally-raised meats to fresh baked goods and speciality items such as Colonial Kettle Corn and Fresh Crunch Pickles.

The Farmers Market, under the direction of Fairfax County, will also take Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits this year. The county received two grants to support expansion of SNAP’s at-market benefits program, formerly known as food stamps. The 2014 grants will allow for an expanded program that  will make farmers markets more accessible to low-income families shopping for fresh, locally produced food, says Fairfax County.

Expansion of the program was made possible through partnerships with Cornerstones, Arcadia, INOVA and the Fairfax County Department of Neighborhood and Community Services, says Fairfax County.

The farmers market will be open Saturdays through November (except for Sept. 28), 8 a.m. to noon.

The farmers market is located in the parking lot of Lake Anne Plaza. Nearby on the market is the Reston Market, where local crafters and artisans sell their wares. The craft market is sponsored by the Friends of Lake Anne.

The Reston Farmers Market will be among several Fairfax County-sponsored markets that will take SNAP benefits this season.

The county received two grants to support expansion of the SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) at-market benefits program, formerly known as food stamps.

The 2014 grants will allow for an expanded program that  will make farmers markets more accessible to low income families shopping for fresh, locally produced food, says Fairfax County.

In addition to the Reston Market — which operates Saturdays beginning May 3 at Lake Anne Plaza – markets  in Lorton and Mount Vernon, as well as the farm stand at Herndon’s Frying Pan Farm Park,  will also accept SNAP.

Expansion of the program was made possible through partnerships with Cornerstones, Arcadia, INOVA and the Fairfax County Department of Neighborhood and Community Services, says Fairfax County.

Reston, Lorton and Mount Vernon will also offer matching dollar programs, in which the amount of money spent by SNAP recipients will be matched up to $10 for fruits and vegetables.  The intent of the matching program is to enable recipients to choose healthier options without spending more of their SNAP funds.

The matching dollars programs at Lorton and McCutcheon/Mount Vernon markets are supported by Arcadia Center for Sustainable Food and Agriculture. The matching dollars program at Reston is supported by INOVA. Fundraising efforts continue through other community organizations and grant opportunities to expand this program.
