A retired Fairfax County Police Department detective had crime come into his Reston home earlier this week.
According to FCPD, retired detective Bruce Wiley was awakened at about 3 a.m. Wednesday by “suspicious noises in his house” in the 1700 block of Beaver Circle. From the police release:
“He grabbed a flashlight and a collapsible baton and went to investigate. He found the intruder, who was wearing a full black mask over his face, in the process of stealing items from the home. Wiley pointed the flashlight at the suspect and told him to get on the ground. The suspect did not comply with Wiley’s commands, as he repeated his commands, Wiley closed in on the suspect, struck him once with the baton and took him to the ground. Meanwhile, Wiley’s wife called police.”
Officers responded took the 17-year-old suspect into custody.
Police say Wiley was a detective on the force for 28 years before retiring in 2010.
“During his tour of duty, Wiley responded to every type of call for service imaginable, from a cat stuck in a tree to a murder scene. He dealt with crime victims with sensitivity and compassion, and investigated crimes with tenacity and dogged determination, but he never thought that he would someday be a crime victim himself.”
Police say Wiley has used his “extensive job knowledge, training and experience to train other law enforcement officers in use-of-force situations.”
Another break-in at the home had been reported to have happened last week between 11 p.m. Friday and 7 a.m. Saturday. Small electronic items were stolen in that case, police reported. A Fairfax County Police Department spokesperson said police “have reason to believe the same suspect might be involved.”

A 19-year-old from Reston was jailed after Herndon Police Department officers say he ran from a traffic stop.
According to police, Tyquan Quantae Johnson was pulled over on March 2 in the 800 block of Alabama Drive. As soon as the vehicle stopped, according to the report, Johnson got out and fled on foot.
The Fairfax County Police Department helicopter was involved in the search for Johnson, police say, and he was located in the 400 block of Pickett Lane.
From the report:
“[Johnson] was arrested for driving while suspended, possession of marijuana, eluding on foot and displaying a fictitious license plate. He was transported to Fairfax County Adult Detention Center, where he was held on bond.”
Police say four occupants of the vehicle were also cited for possession of marijuana.
A home in Reston was victim of a nighttime burglary after police say the suspect took a garage door opener from an unlocked vehicle.
Police say the incident took place sometime between 3 and 3:20 a.m. Friday at a residence in the 12100 block of Tryton Way. A purse and wallet were reported missing from the home.
A second burglary was also reported over the weekend on the 1700 block of Beaver Circle. The Fairfax County Police Department says the thief entered the home through a door sometime between 11 p.m. Friday and 7 a.m. Saturday. Small electronic items were reported missing.

The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office arrested a 40-year-old Herndon man on Thursday after they say he stabbed three people in Sterling.
Police say Nelson Urbina-Zalaya is charged with three counts of malicious wounding and is being held without bond at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center. The charges stem from an altercation shortly after 2 a.m. Wednesday in the 46900 block of Community Plaza.
According to the report, two adult male victims were stabbed during the parking-lot altercation, while a third was hurt when he intervened. All three were taken to the hospital with what police described as non-life-threatening injuries.
The circumstances that led to the assault remain under investigation, police say.

The United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency has issued detainers for all four adults charged in connection with an apparent gang-related killing in Fairfax County, including an 18-year-old Reston resident.
Cindy Blanco Hernandez, 18, of Winterthur Lane in Reston, is among the 10 people ages 15-21 charged in connection with the death of 15-year-old Damaris Alexandra Reyes Rivas of Gaithersburg. Hernandez faces charges of abduction and gang participation in the case. Five of the other suspects face murder charges.
Six of the charged individuals are juveniles. Hernandez and the other three adults in the case — Wilmer A. Sanchez-Serrano, 21, of no fixed address; Aldair J. Miranda Carcamo, 18, of Springfield; and Jose Castillo Rivas, 18, of Springfield — have had detainers issued for them by ICE.
According to Carissa Cutrell, public affairs officer for the Department of Homeland Security, a detainer is issued when a person in custody is either in the United States illegally or has violated the terms of their legal status in the country.
“We issue a detainer to a local or state law enforcement agency when a person in their custody is potentially amenable to removal by ICE,” she said. “Rather than the local law enforcement agency releasing them into the community, we say we would appreciate [them] notifying us before they are released, so they can be turned over to our custody.”
Cutrell said she could not provide specific details about the case. She said in most cases, suspects are sent through the immigration court process, and a judge’s orders — potentially, removal from the United States — would be executed.
“There is a whole process that happens between us issuing that detainer and the individual being removed from the United States,” she said.

Five of the 10 people charged with abduction and gang participation in relation to the killing of a Gaithersburg teen now face murder charges.
Jose Ivan Castillo Rivas, 18, of Springfield; Wilmer A. Sanchez, 21, of no fixed address; and three 17-year-olds from Alexandria, Annandale and Springfield have been charged with murder as the investigation into the death of 15-year-old Damaris Alexandra Reyes Rivas continues.
Cindy Blanco Hernandez, 18, of Wintherthur Lane in Reston, is among the five suspects who have not yet been charged with any additional crimes.
According to the Fairfax County Police Department, it is believed Reyes Rivas was held against her will before she was taken to Lake Accotink Park, assaulted and killed. Police believe this happened on or around Jan. 8.
At a news conference Tuesday, Fairfax County Police Chief Edwin Roessler said it was a “savage, brutal killing.”
“It was horrific,” Roessler said. “It was horrible.”
Reyes Rivas had been reported missing in Montgomery County in early December. The girl’s body was found in the 7100 block of Wimsatt Road in Springfield on Saturday, and her death was ruled a homicide Monday after an autopsy.
Police believe the killing to be gang-related. The teen’s mother told NBC4 her daughter had been threatened by the gang MS-13.
At Tuesday’s news conference, law enforcement did not confirm the gang to be MS-13, but did go into detail about gang presence in the area.
“These illegal gangs are recruiting juveniles… [and] preying on those who are vulnerable, who are looking for security,” said Jay Lannom, Northern Virginia Regional Gang Task Force director. “We are are seeing a lot of increase in recruiting in high schools and middle schools, which is alarming to us.”

Police say a sales arrangement through Craigslist turned criminal Tuesday night at Reston Town Center.
According to a report from the Fairfax County Police Department, a Craigslist user agreed to a meeting in the 11900 block of Freedom Drive at about 7:45 p.m. to negotiate the sale of cellphones.
“The suspects arrived and as the victim was showing one suspect a cellphone, another suspect tried to steal the other phones. The victim struggled with the suspects until one of them produced a handgun and threatened the victim. The suspects fled with several phones and the victim was not injured.”
The suspects were described by police as black men, 25-30 years old. One was around 6 feet tall and 220 pounds, and they were both wearing dark clothing. The suspects left the scene in a silver Mercedes Benz sedan, according to the report.
Fairfax County police began offering a “safe zone” for Craigslist exchanges at the Sully District Station last year; at the time, police said the program “would likely expand to other police station parking lots” in the future.
The Herndon Police Station also offers a “safe zone” for such transactions.
The Fairfax County Police Department says charges have been filed against a man accused of stealing wheels from vehicles last year.
Jason Brooks, 38, was charged recently with seven counts of grand larceny and seven counts of larceny with the intent to sell stolen property. The Maryland resident was already in custody in Loudoun County, on unrelated charges.
Police say Brooks has been connected with seven different tire and rim thefts in Fairfax County between March and July. Two of the incidents took place in Herndon.
SHOTS FIRED IN HERNDON
Police are investigating a shots-fired incident that took place Saturday evening in Herndon.
Officers responded to a home on Poener Place, near Hutchison Elementary School, for a report of several people at the door with guns. The caller also told police shots may have been fired at the home. Arriving officers say they heard shots, and a bullet was found at the scene.
“Four suspects fled in a white SUV and a lookout was broadcast. The suspect vehicle was stopped a short time later in the Town of Herndon. The suspects have been taken into custody for interviews and further investigation. An extensive check of the area by Fairfax 1 and K9 did not yield any additional suspects.”
No injuries were reported.
