Fairfax County Police are investigating the death of a prisoner Saturday night.
Police said Paul Guida, 68, of Falls Church, was found unconscious and not breathing in the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center’s medical unit around 11 p.m. Saturday. Jail staff performed rescue procedures on him until paramedics arrived at 11:06 p.m., a sheriff’s spokesman said.
Guida was taken to Inova Fairfax Hospital at 11:28 p.m. and was pronounced dead 20 minutes later.
Detectives are required to investigate all in-custody deaths, FCPD says.
The Office of the Medical Examiner will determine the cause and manner of death pending an autopsy.
Police said they will provide an update on the investigation within 30 days, or as soon as it becomes available.
Guida was jailed on charges of violating of a protective order and was being held without bond since Oct. 1. Guida suffered from extensive medical conditions, police said.
The sheriff’s office said they knew of no physical altercation or other conflict that would lead to the prisoner’s death.
Guida’s is the second in-custody death in the Fairfax jail this year. In February, Natasha McKenna, a 37-year-old who suffered from schizophrenia, died at Inova Fairfax Hospital after being tasered several times by deputies.
The Virginia medical examiner later ruled McKenna’s death was due to “excited delirium” due to physical restraint and use of the taser. The Fairfax Commonealth’s Attorney said last month that no criminal charges would be filed against the deputies involved in McKenna’s death.

Fairfax County Police have made an arrest in a series of destruction cases in which office buildings were damaged by gunfire.
Matthew Charles Malacarne, 29, of Herndon, was charged with one count of felony Destruction of Property and one count of Shooting into an Occupied Dwelling for an incident that occurred Aug. 3, police said.
He was also charged with one count of felony Destruction of Property for an Aug. 4 incident and Destruction of Property from an incident on Sept. 17.
The investigation included detectives from Fairfax County, as well as the Towns of Herndon and Leesburg. The latter have been investigating similar cases in each jurisdiction.
In each of the two Fairfax County incidents, the suspect discharged a gun, striking a building during the overnight hours. In one incident, there were employees inside the business, police said.
Police were led to Malacarne after a shooting earlier this month. On Monday, Sept. 21. An employee of a business located in the 2200 block of Corporate Drive in Herndon reported to police that several pieces of equipment were damaged during the evening hours of Thursday, Sept. 17.
Detectives investigating the report determined the suspect intentionally damaged a security camera, a key lockbox, a satellite dish and shut down the building’s elevators, costing thousands of dollars in damages. Police received additional information that enabled detectives to identify that suspect.
A felony Destruction of Property warrant was obtained for the destruction case on Sept. 17, and detectives took Malacarne into custody on Friday, Sept. 25. A search warrant was also served at his residence that same day.
Evidence obtained during that search warrant led detectives to also charge Malacarne for the two early-August destruction incidents where buildings were shot in Fairfax County.
Detectives in the Town of Herndon have also pursued charges for the incidents in their jurisdiction. Malacarne is currently being held in the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center without bond.

Michael Wayne Edwards, a former Reston personal trainer who was charged last month with taking “upskirt” videos at the South Lakes Safeway, was arrested last week on an additional similar charge, Fairfax County Police said.
Edwards was charged on Sept 6 with filming a non-consented nude person. He was released on $2,500 bond, said police spokeswoman Lucy Caldwell.
The most recent charges stem from a July 24 incident. A woman said she was in the South Lakes Safeway and felt someone someone bump her and then touch her underneath clothing while she was in the store. She identified the person as Edwards.
Edwards has an Oct. 13 hearing in Fairfax County Court on the most recent charge.
In August, Edwards, 33, of Centreville, was charged with indecent exposure, simulated masturbation and filming a non-consented nude person. A woman told police she was shopping at Safeway when a man, identified as Edwards, was following her in the store on more than one occasion.
The victim said as she walked back to work that day, Edwards followed her as she walked near Sunrise Valley Drive and Lakespray Way. The man appeared to be videotaping and spoke to her. The woman told police the man then exposed himself to her then he ran away. Officers identified the suspect and worked with store personnel to investigate.
Edwards told Reston Now in August he did not commit any crime. Edwards was fired from his job at Fusion360 gym, also located at South Lakes, shortly after the first arrest. He has a hearing date of Nov. 24 on the August charges.
This is not the first time Edwards has been accused of a sexually related crime. In 2010, he was charged with several accounts of second-degree assault after he squirted semen from a bottle on women as they exited a Giant and Michael’s craft stores in Gaithersburg, Md.
Edwards pled guilty to one of those charges (the rest were dropped as part of the plea deal). He was fined $500 and given a three-year suspended jail sentence, Montgomery County records show. His probation period ended in June 2014.
